RAMADAN OVERVIEW YOU SHARED RAMADAN FOOD PACKAGES WITH OVER 456,450 PEOPLE IN 34 COUNTRIES IN 2017... The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said: Ramadan has come to you. It is a month of blessing, in which Allah covers you with blessing, for He sends down Mercy, decreases sins, and answers prayers. In it, Allah looks at your competition (in good deeds), and boasts about you to His angels. So show Allah goodness from yourselves, for the unfortunate one is he who is deprived in (this month) of the mercy of Allah, the Mighty, the Exalted. [Imam Tabarani] For 25 years, the Islamic Relief USA family has been working to relieve the suffering of our sisters and brothers in humanity. During the month of Ramadan, this work increases, and the increased generosity of our donors fuels our efforts. From zakat to food packages to fidya and kaffara, your work in Ramadan results in blessings to many families here at home and around the world....and YOUR ZAKAT REACHED FAMILIES IN 33 COUNTRIES!

FOOD PACKAGES Ramadan food packages help low-income and impoverished families during this blessed month each year. In 2017, your Ramadan food packages helped about a quarter of a million people in 34 countries. The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, He is not a believer whose stomach is filled while his neighbor goes hungry. [Sunan Al-Kubra] Sharing nutritious food with a person in need is one of the core components of Islam, and of Islamic Relief. Each year, Islamic Relief USA donors send Ramadan food packages to families in need around the world. The goal is to improve food security during this month for impoverished families, refugees and other displaced families, and other vulnerable groups and communities. All the food items are purchased through the local markets to help the local economy. The food items vary from country to country depending on local diet, but they include staple foods such as rice, flour, beans, and oil. Package weights vary by country, but typically they weigh almost 60 pounds. IN 2018, ISLAMIC RELIEF USA AIMS TO PROVIDE 2.5 MILLION POUNDS OF FOOD TO HELP SUPPLEMENT THE DIETS OF PEOPLE IN 35 COUNTRIES. AFGHANISTAN 7,500 KENYA 15,000 SOMALIA 20,000 ALBANIA 5,000 KOSOVO 5,750 SOUTH AFRICA 1,750 BANGLADESH 9,000 LEBANON 2,800 SOUTH SUDAN 15,000 BOSNIA 6,750 LESOTHO 1,000 SRI LANKA 5,500 CHAD 5,750 MACEDONIA 2,250 SUDAN 9,500 CHECHNYA 9,000 MALAWI 6,750 SYRIA 90,000 CHINA 2,500 MALI 8,000 TUNISIA 2,500 ETHIOPIA 35,000 MYANMAR 15,000 UNITED STATES 22,350 INDIA 28,500 NIGER 5,250 YEMEN 15,000 INDONESIA 3,000 PAKISTAN 15,000 ZIMBABWE 2,500 IRAQ 15,000 PALESTINE 56,503 TOTAL 456,453 JORDAN 7,500 PHILIPPINES 4,550 *These numbers are estimates based on number of packages distributed and average number of family members in each country. FEED A FAMILY WITH YOUR FIDYA OR KAFFARA DONATION If you re unable to fast, Islamic Relief USA can accept your fidya and kaffara donations and provide food for people in need on your behalf. Fidya and kaffara donations help pay for food packages and can reach many people.

RAMADAN RELIEF IN EAST AFRICA ZAKAT When Auliya lost her husband last year, she was left to care for her 10 children on her own. In her hometown of Mandera, Kenya, food is very hard to come by. Oftentimes, crops are destroyed due to drought or flooding. Auliya and her family had been surviving off funeral contributions from relatives following the death of her husband, but that money was quickly running out. During tough times we sold our goats to provide meals to our children, she said. But after her husband passed away, she didn t know what she would do. I have no other source of income, she said. Last Ramadan, Auliya was grateful to receive a food package sent by a kind Islamic Relief donor. It helped her feed her family and meant several days of relief. This year, families in Kenya and across East Africa face catastrophic flooding that has caused hundreds of thousands to be displaced. Your gift of food can be a light of hope for families during a trying Ramadan. We endure long days of fasting under the scorching sun, Auliya said. To be able to have iftar and suhur is very important to one s emotions and spiritual wellbeing. She had a final message for IRUSA donors: I only say thank you, and may the blessings of Allah be upon you. May Allah make you happy as you have made us happy today. To help more people like Auliya, send a Ramadan food package today. And establish prayer and give zakat, and whatever good you put forward for yourselves you will find it with Allah; surely Allah sees what you do. [Qur an 2:110] During Ramadan, many Islamic Relief USA donors give zakat to support work for people who qualify under Islamic principles: the poor, the needy, travelers in this case, refugees and other displaced families. In the United States, zakat funds are distributed through partner mosques and organizations nationwide. These partners know the local residents and can confirm their eligibility. In other countries around the world, zakat funds support projects benefiting families and communities in many ways, from food and water to health care, education, and building secure livelihoods. ZAKAT AL-FITR Zakat al-fitr is paid by the head of the household for each member of the family, before Eid al-fitr prayer. Zakat al-fitr is about the price of one meal estimated at $10. IRUSA collects and distributes your Zakat al-fitr to feed those who are most in need, in accordance with Islamic guidelines.

YOUR ZAKAT IN ACTION RECENT PROJECTS SUPPORTED IN PART BY ZAKAT FUNDS Community Support Program (BEGAN APRIL 2017) This project will help 3,200 people Residents living within food deserts in Washington, D.C. are benefiting from this Community Support program that provides access to fresh produce monthly and offers an after school meal service for food-insecure students within the area. Rebuilding Livelihoods and Reducing Food Insecurity in Northern Mali (BEGAN MARCH 2017) This project will help 8,860 people Communities in Mali are benefiting from solar-powered boreholes. The water systems are empowering communities to raise crops, learn proper nutrition, and alleviate waterborne diseases. Emergency Food Assistance to Conflict Affected Communities in Yemen (ENDED DECEMBER 2017) This project helped 7,700 people Families in Yemen suffering from food and health insecurity are receiving relief in the form of food parcels with staple items such as flour, rice, sugar, beans, and oil. Building Ongoing Opportunities Through Sustained Training (ENDED DECEMBER 2017) This project will help 1,862 people In a time of economic suffering in southeast Michigan, Zaman International is ensuring that families facing poverty are able to sustain themselves through the BOOST program. Participants in the program are given the opportunity to take part in job training, English as a Second Language classes, and emergency financial assistance. Urgent Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene in Gaza (ENDED OCTOBER 2017) This project helped 40,000 people Communities in Gaza are able to access clean water thanks to this project that restores water wells and pipes. With the help of hygiene kits and hygiene education sessions, participants also learn proper ways to alleviate disease. ZAKAT for ZAINAB Zainab and her husband are active members of their mosque in Virginia. We ve been here for a long time, she said. Zainab and her husband take part in programs, they attend prayers; she s even volunteered at the food pantry. So when she and her husband fell on some hard times, she turned to the Islamic Relief USA-sponsored zakat program there. My husband was not feeling OK, and he couldn t find any job, she said. They fell behind in their rent. They applied at different programs, and this one is where they found help. The program paid the month s rent. It was enough to help them through the difficult time. May Allah (SWT) give me to give them, she said. May Allah bless you all. Zainab had been a donor before she helped run a fundraiser in conjunction with Islamic Relief USA. We know this is from our Islamic history, from Rasul (SAW). You have to be a giver or a receiver, there s no third one. We just do our obligations. When I have money, I have to give because that s my pillar of Islam, to help my fellow brother and sister. I really urge everyone who can, to help. Gaza

ya ORPHAN PROGRAMS The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) told us, The one who cares for an orphan and myself will be together in Paradise like this, and he held his two fingers together. [Bukhari] Ramadan reminds us to care for the orphan children in our communities. IRUSA donors are currently supporting tens of thousands of children in nearly two dozen countries around the world. New for 2018 orphan sponsorships are now available in Chad, Malawi, and Tunisia. Orphans are waiting for your care. IRUSA s loving community has been caring for orphans since the organization s founding. These sponsorships have been a lifeline to children, and a chance at a better future. Now, IRUSA has begun focusing on a different kind of orphan support projects that extend critical services to entire communities full of orphans and vulnerable children. In these programs, instead of each donor s contribution going to one single orphan, they go toward community-wide services like vocational training, free education, and more. By donating to these programs, you can uplift entire communities. 22K 21K 20K 19K 18K 17K 16K 15K 14K 13K 12K 11K 10K 9K 8K 7K 6K 5K 4K 3K 2K 1K Over 10 years, the number of orphans sponsored by IRUSA donors more than doubled. 8,936 10-YEAR GROWTH 8,494 7,645 7,541 8,210 10,624 14,066 14,955 15,819 20,421 21,500 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 YOU HELPED SUPPORT ORPHANS FROM THE FOLLOWING COUNTRIES IN 2017: AFGHANISTAN ALBANIA BANGLADESH BOSNIA CHECHNYA ETHIOPIA INDIA INDONESIA IRAQ JORDAN KENYA KOSOVA LEBANON MALI NIGER PAKISTAN PALESTINE SOMALIA SOUTH AFRICA SRI LANKA SYRIA YEMEN

WATER AND SANITATION PROGRAMS IN 2017, YOU HELPED OVER 332,000 PEOPLE WITH OVER $12,914,000 IN AID Islamic Relief USA has invested in the development of life-changing water projects for the past 25 years. In regions all over world, water is and continues to be a fundamental building block for communities. Because of issues such as poor infrastructure, prolonged conflict, and a challenging climate, many countries are experiencing devastated water systems. Through local partnerships and the collaboration among some of the best innovators in water system development, Islamic Relief USA is restoring dignity to families. Places like Niger, Bangladesh, Malawi, and Chad are benefitting from the construction of solar-powered wells. For emergencies such as the cholera explosion in Yemen or drought in Somalia, rapid responses through water pack delivery have helped aid ongoing crises.
