[ Workshop On "Indian perspective on Research Methodology in History" 15 March 21 March 2017 Organized by Department of History Faculty of Social Sciences Banaras Hindu University Varanasi-221005
Theme A number of questions seem to arise regarding the social relevance of research in history. It is believed that every research work has some social relevance. It is evident that some researchers have clear idea of it and others do not. If we look at the researches done on Indian History, through the writings done by Indian historians we are able to figure out the 'social relevance component' of Indian History. The intellectual endeavor of the historians from different time periods reflect certain shifts in the approaches towards writing of history. During the pre colonial period it was either the history of the courts full of eulogies or the popular history by way of a mixture of myths and legends. With the advent of the British a new reconstruction of Indian history was introduced. Soon the Indian scholars started giving their responses to the colonial historiography and reconstructed Indian history with a deeper understanding of the indigenous sources. After seven decades of independence it is time to look back towards all these developments in Indian historiography and understand the worth of the efforts done by the historians for presenting Indian way of looking at the past.

Pt. M.M. Malaviyaji : The Educational Vision Educational was always one of malaviya's chief concern. Banaras Hindu Univesity is a tribute to the vast vision. Indomitable spirit and unflagging zeal of our founding father mahamana pt. M.M. Malaviya ji. It is a monument to his selfless service in the couse of Indian education. Mahamana dreamt of creating an ideal scheme of education which would serve the cause nation building rise above narrow sectorion interests, combine the best in western scienfific methods with all that is good and great in our culture and promote a "broad liberation of mind and religious spirit". Every alumnus who passes through the portals of this great institution carries these seeds of the timeless vision of mahamana with him. Globalization as we now name it is not an alien concept to our culture. Our seers had this vision of the world as a family even when geographical distance was a formidable berried to communication. The Indian consciousness has always perceived the world as one family. The hallmark of the Indian vision of the education has been openness and acceptance of noble thoughts to from all directions while at the same time sending out its own message to the world. As Swami Vivekananda said "Like the gentle dew that falls unseen and unheard and yet brings into blossom the fairest of roses, has been the contribution of Indian to the thought of the world. Silent, unperceived, yet omnipotent in its effect, it has revolutionized the thought of the world yet nobody know when it did so." Malaviya ji who epitomized Indian values gifted the world with a unique model of integrated, harmonious and balanced education in the shape of Banaras Hindu University. "The end of all knowledge is the attainment of immortality" eloquently reflects the premium placed on education in our ancient culture. The scheme of education proposed by Mahamana assumer renewed signification today when higher education facing challenger as never before.
