In the first reading from Isaiah, we hear the beautiful words of hope and joy, The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; upon those who dwelt in the land of gloom a light has shone. This is not written only for people before the time of Jesus, although he fulfilled this prophecy. It is written for us. There is plenty of gloom in our world today. You only need to read the headlines to see this violence, injustice, hatred, hunger, poverty. However, our faith in Jesus and His presence in our lives should bring (us) abundant joy and great rejoicing. If this is not true, then perhaps we are not letting the Good News of the Gospel really touch and affect our lives. Our faith will not eliminate all of our problems, but having Jesus intimately in our being should change our attitude and outlook towards our problems. The second challenge is from the Gospel of Matthew, when Jesus calls Simon, Andrew, James, and John. They were at work as fishermen, and At once they left their nets and followed him. Jesus is calling us today, right now as we are reading this, to follow Him. Maybe we don t have to quit our jobs and become apostles, but the question is, Are we changing anything in our lives to become followers of Jesus, or are we following Him only to the extent that it doesn t challenge our comfort zone or status quo? Maybe we need to do some serious self-assessment here. So here is my challenge to myself and all who read this. First, let us live as people who find joy in our faith and the Gospel. Let us make this joy shine forth during our liturgies and all through our everyday lives. Be welcoming at Mass, and sing out especially loudly. Make our workmates and fellow students ask how we can be so peaceful and joyful with the stress of everyday life. In terms of following Jesus, we have a great opportunity after Masses this weekend to get connected to numerous service opportunities via the Time and Talent Festival. Stop by and see what you can do. There is literally something for everyone. Paul A. Gulig Chair, Stewardship Committee and Parish Council 4
