MESSAGE FROM THE VICAR Dearly beloveds in Christ, Greetings to you in the name of our God and Savior Jesus Christ. In the last News Letter we discussed about the meaning and significance of sacraments, especially Holy Baptism. We are continuing our studies with the next two sacraments, Confirmation and Confession. Confirmation is a sacrament admitting a baptized person to the full fellowship of the church and it is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. Confirmation is done after the baptism service by anointing with the Holy Mooron (Syriac, meaning a Holy Chrism or a consecrated-oil used for anointing). In this sacramental moment the church specifically prays for the gift of the Holy Spirit. Baptismal anointing with moron is also to signify the candidate s ordination to the priesthood of believers. The Mooron is prepared with special prayers by the bishops of the Mar Thom Church. Confession is a sacrament by which a person confesses his or her sins/sinful nature and receives absolution. Confession is incorporated into the liturgy of the Holy Qurbana. For our Church confession is a public sacrament and it is acknowledging our sins by enumerating them directly to God. In 1 John 1:9 it reads If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Biblical confession is a way to experience more of God s grace. Confessing is part of the sanctification process and aids us in dealing with sin and healing from it. Proverbs 28:13 explains the call for confession Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. Let us experience the joy of Christian life with a repentant heart and be righteous in living. This month we will observe the Edavaka Mission Day on 12th Oct., the Youth Sunday on 19th Oct. and the Yuvajana Sakhyam Day on 26th Oct2014. Our Annual Convention is from Oct. 23th to 26st. On 25thOct, we may have a combined retreat of Sevika Sanghom, Edavaka Mission & Senior Citizens. Sunday 26th Oct. will be celebrated as the Family Sunday which is intended to strengthen our families and the Church the family of families. A sacramental family can transform the world around. Let us continue our journey with Christ to transform the world. God bless you all. In prayer God bless you all. With thanks and regards Joji K. Mathew Achen 3 YOUTH CHAPLAIN S MESSAGE Wait or weight? Many of you will have seen the film "Chariots of Fire", an outstanding film about a Christian Eric Liddell, who refuses to run in the prestigious 100 metres in the 1924 Paris Olympics because it involved racing in a preheat on a Sunday, which Liddell believed to be a ungodly use of Sunday. Liddell was probably the fastest man alive at that time and had been the favorite to win it for Britain. The Press and even the Prince of Wales tried to talk him into running but he refused. Instead, he went to the Scottish Presbyterian church that Sunday and read the lesson from Isaiah 40. And verse 31 seem to capture the situation However, he was given the chance to race for Britain in the 400 metres a race he had never even run before. And God honoured him for his stand. Liddell ran the 400 metres at a 100 m pace. The experts thought he was running the first 100 metres too fast and would tire later in the race. But he was able to run the 400 meters and won the gold medal for Britain in that Olympics. Liddell was completely depending on God for his choices and and he 'waited' on the Lord for his life and God gave him success. The word "wait" does not suggest that we sit around and do nothing. It means "to hope," to look to God for all that we need. This involves meditating on His character and His promises, praying, and seeking to glorify Him. In Hebrew (qavah kav-waw ) the figurative meaning of the word is to bind together like a cord. The literal meaning of the word is hope. Our world is giving a lot importance to the 'weight' and the fitness industry is flourishing rampantly. We do everything possible to maintain our weight and use all the resources for a long lasting life. But that weight is temporary and perishing but God wants us to invest on what is non perishing and important in our lives. Waiting upon the lord is eternal and we are giving our complete trust in God and hoping to live with him eternally. Isaiah chapter 40 talks about the the blessings that we receive when we wait upon the Lord. Isiah 40.31 says 31 but those who hope in the Lord, will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. There are three blessings that will be given to those who wait. They will renew their strength, they will sour on wings like eagles, and they will run and not grow weary and will walk and not be faint. Let us wait upon the lord and He will give His strength. V. M. Mathew Achen, Youth Chaplain 194 Bregman Ave, New Hyde Park, NY 4 516-437-0425
