ORDER OF WORSHIP September 6, 2015 15 h Sunday after Pentecost 23 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time / Proper 18 *Congregation Stands (If you prefer, It is acceptable to remain seated.) Welcome to Knox Presbyterian Church! Please sign and pass the Friendship Book ( pew pad ) if you have not already done so. Our prayer is that you will experience the presence of the eternal, as we worship our God together. We invite you to take the time during the prelude to focus your heart and mind in worship. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Andrew Rowley PRELUDE "A Setting on 'Beach Spring'" Organ Wilbur Held Andrew Rowley Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; there is no end to his greatness. One generation shall praise your works to another and shall declare your power. All your works praise you, Lord, and your faithful servants bless you. They make known the glory of your kingdom and speak of your power. My mouth shall speak the praise of the Lord: Let all flesh bless his holy name for ever and ever. CALL TO WORSHIP based on Psalm 145:3-4, 10-11, 21 Reprinted by permission from The Worship Sourcebook, 2004, Faith Alive Christian Resources *SONGS OF WORSHIP: THERE S SOMETHING ABOUT THAT NAME Jesus, Jesus, Jesus: there s just something about that name! Master, Savior, Jesus like the fragrance after the rain; Jesus, Jesus, Jesus, let all heaven and earth proclaim: Kings and kingdoms will all pass away, but there s something about that name.

TIME OF PRAYER and all the stars obey. JESUS, NAME ABOVE ALL NAMES (Hymn #106) Jesus, name above all names, beautiful Savior, glorious Lord Emmanuel, God is with us blessed Redeemer, Living Word. Camille Troxel Prayer of Confession Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid. Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Christ, our Lord. Amen. [Silent Prayer] Assurance of Pardon HYMN: HIS NAME IS WONDERFUL (Hymn 87) His name is Wonderful, his name is Wonderful, his name is Wonderful, Jesus, my Lord; he is the mighty King, Master of everything, his name is Wonderful, Jesus my Lord. He s the great shepherd, the Rock of all ages, Almighty God is he; bow down before him, love and adore him, his name is Wonderful, Jesus my Lord. OFFERING OF OURSELVES & OUR GIFTS: *Doxology Praise God from whom all blessings flow;

Praise him, all creatures here below Praise him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Dedication Camille Troxel At this time the children are excused to attend Junior Chapel. Please be seated during the playing of the Offertory. The ushers will pass the offering plates. Offertory "A Simple Prayer" Organ Edvard Grieg PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Dawn Troxel Acts 4:8 12 (NIV) 8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them: Rulers and elders of the people! 9 If we are being called to account today for an act of kindness shown to a man who was lame and are being asked how he was healed, 10 then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. 11 Jesus is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone. 12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved. Philippians 2:5 11 (NIV) 5 In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; 7 rather, he made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. MESSAGE Name Above Every Name HYMN: PRAISE HIM! PRAISE HIM (Hymn #96) (VERSE 1) Praise him! praise him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer! Sing, O Earth, his wonderful love proclaim! Hail him! hail him! Highest archangels in glory; strength and honor give to his holy name! Like a shepherd Jesus will guard his children, in his arms he carries them all day long: Praise him! praise him! tell of his excellent greatness; praise him! praise him ever in joyful song! (VERSE 2) Praise him! praise him! Jesus, or blessed Redeemer! For our sins he suffered, and bled and died; he our Rock, our hope of eternal salvation, hail him! hail him! Jesus the Crucified. Sound his praises! Jesus who bore our sorrows; love unbounded, wonderful, deep and strong:

Praise him! praise him! tell of his excellent greatness; praise him! praise him ever in joyful song! (VERSE 3) Praise him! praise him! Jesus, or blessed Redeemer! Heavenly portals loud with hosannas ring! Jesus, Savior, reigneth forever and ever; crown him! crown him! Prophet and Priest and King! Christ is coming! over the world victorious, power and glory unto the Lord belong: Praise him! praise him! tell of his excellent greatness; praise him! praise him ever in joyful song! SHARING AROUND CHRIST S TABLE COMMUNION Christ becomes a part of our flesh through Holy Communion. The Lord s Supper is not an end in itself. It always points beyond itself to celebrate God s grace and covenant faithfulness. This does not mean the physical aspects of the celebration are incidental or unimportant. The Lord s Supper should be a celebration fitting to the abundant grace of God offered in Christ. Invitation to the Lord s Supper Breaking of the Bread & Pouring of the Cup Sharing the Body and Blood of Christ *CLOSING SONG It is the custom at Knox, in celebration of Holy Communion, to hold hands and form a circle around the sanctuary to sing our closing song BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS (Hymn #708) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. In the pulpit today: Don Meekhof is our Temporary Stated Supply pastor. Those words in quotes are the official title given by Presbytery, because with Shared Ministry there is no full-time pastor. However, Don most definitely has a fulltime love for shepherding the flock of Christ and we are blessed to have him with us!
