Functional Caring Honor/Respect Honesty Intimacy Fidelity Dysfunctional Selfish Trashing Lying/Deceit Distant Adultery : Almost every evangelism effort works in high quality churches Almost every evangelism effort fails in low quality churches : There Is NO Substitute For Quality In Churches People Like Being In a Healthy, Functional Environment Page 37

: Doctrine Doesn t Overcome Poor Quality Matthew 23:1-4 1 Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples: 2 "The teachers of the law and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat. 3 So you must obey them and do everything they tell you. But do not do what they do, for they do not practice what they preach. 4 They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders, but they themselves are not willing to lift a finger to move them. : Doctrine Doesn t Overcome Poor Quality Matthew 23:1-4 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 3 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. [3] : Doctrine Doesn t Overcome Poor Quality Matthew 23:11-13 11 The greatest among you will be your servant. 12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. 13 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the kingdom of heaven in men's faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to. Page 38

: Doctrine Doesn t Overcome Poor Quality Matthew 23:15 15 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice as much a son of hell as you are. : Pure Doctrine Doesn t Overcome Poor Quality Our Challenge: Truth AND Quality Luke 19:10 Luke 19:10 8 But Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half of my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody out of anything, I will pay back four times the amount." 9 Jesus said to him, "Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." Page 39

Luke 19:10 Luke 19:10 10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost." SEEK Active and outgoing effort SAVE Salvation ALL BY ITSELF Mark 4:26-29 26 He also said, "This is what the kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. 27 Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how. 28 All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. 29 As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come." Eph 4 Eph 4:11-16 11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Page 40

Eph 4 Eph 4:11-16 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of men in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work. Eph 4 Eph 4:11-16 The biblical role for MINISTERS is to 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, THE BIBLICAL ROLE FOR THE LAITY (GOD S PEOPLE) IS TO DO WORKS OF SERVICE INCLUDING EVANGELISM Eph 4 Eph 4:11-16 There are ministers ordained to teach, preach and lead There are ministries works of service performed by the laity the people of God God wants MINISTERS to support the people of God s MINISTRIES Page 41

Priesthood of All Believers Priesthood of All Believers From the Protestant Reformation Luther s attempt to reform the Catholic Church Gross abuses by the priests Calvin and others removing the priest from standing between the believer and Jesus Christ He is our High Priest. He is our intercessor In the xcog community of faith, ministers are not priests Priesthood of All Believers Priesthood of All Believers In the xcog community of faith, ministers are not priests I reject the idea that there is a Priesthood of All Ministers with no ordained ministry as being unsupported by Scripture There IS an ordination into the ministry. There ARE responsibilities for elders to teach, preach and lead Priesthood of All Believers Priesthood of All Believers I reject the concept of clergy seizing all authority and usurping the role of the laity to perform the works of service ministries. Rather elders are to TRAIN them to perform the ministries to which they have been called and given spiritual gifts to perform. Page 42

Priesthood of All Believers Eph 4:11-16 11 And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, 12 for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, 13 till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; (NKJV) Becoming a Better Tool How can we be a better tool for Jesus to use in SEEKING WHAT IS LOST? How do we? Healthy Churches Grow: How do we accurately assess church health? How do we refine the vision, goals and strategies of a congregation? How do we measure and develop our essential values? How do we focus resources appropriately? How do we produce lasting health and growth? Page 43

What NCD Is: Natural Church Development NCD is a framework to organize the growth and development of a congregation to become a more useful to for God to use in evangelism NCD provides diagnostic tools for congregations to measure the quality of their congregation and how it changes over time NCD identifies the areas of focus NCD research shows what kind of congregation repulses people and what kind of congregation helps people to stick What NCD Is: Natural Church Development What Does NCD Do? It reminds us that God brings the growth and it is their role to partner with Him, not generate the growth themselves. It helps them focus on principles not programs. It provides a regular accurate "snapshot" of a church's health. What NCD Is: Natural Church Development What Does NCD Do? It outlines a process for improving quality. It helps leaders focus on essential growth values. It provides concrete input for developing or refining vision. It helps direct limited resources effectively. Page 44

What NCD Is Not: Natural Church Development NCD Is NOT: NCD is not a prescriptive "silver bullet" program guaranteeing church growth. NCD is not a substitute for spiritual leadership motivated to achieve healthy growth. What NCD Is Not: Natural Church Development NCD Is NOT: NCD is not a substitute for the unique vision that God has for each church. Every church leader must seek God for that vision. NCD will, however, undergird, clarify and stimulate that vision. NCD does not bring unity where there is division. The Survey is most suited to churches with members united and committed to the ongoing life and healthy growth of the church. NCD is not a short term solution. Deciding to "try NCD this year" will miss the riches of exploring the paradigm. Page 45
