The First Sunday of Advent The Holy Eucharist THE LITURGY OF THE WORD Processional Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus Charles Wesley Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us; let us find our rest in thee. Israel s strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art, dear Desire of ev ry nation, joy of ev ry longing heart. Joy to those who long to see thee, Dayspring from on high, appear; Come, thou promised Rod of Jesse, Of thy birth we long to hear! O er the hills the angels singing news, Glad tidings of a birth; Go to him, your praises bringing; Christ the Lord has come to earth. Come to earth to taste our sadness, He whose glories knew no end; By his life he brings us gladness, our Redeemer, Shepherd, Friend. Leaving riches without number, born within a cattle stall; This the everlasting wonder, Christ was born the Lord of all. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a king, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring. By thine own eternal Spirit rule in all our hearts alone; by thine all-sufficient merit, raise us to thy glorious throne. Surely the Lord is coming soon, Amen. Come Lord Jesus! Collect for Purity (in unison) Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your Holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen. The Summary of the Law Jesus said: You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets. Matthew 22:37-40

Kyrie Eleison Tomlin, Redman, Maher, Ingram CCLI: 7071195 The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Let us pray.

Collect Almighty God, give us grace to cast away the works of darkness, and put on the armor of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which your Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the living and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through him who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen. First Reading (all be seated) Isaiah 2:1-5 (Pew Bible p. 550) The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. The Gradual (all remain seated) Psalm 122:1-2, 3-4, 4-5, 6-7, 8-9 Response: (Cantor sings once, then all sing) Verses: (Cantor sings Verse, then all sing Response) I rejoiced because they said to me, We will go up to the house of the LORD. And now we have set foot within your gates, O Jerusalem. Jerusalem, built as a city with compact unity. To it the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD. According to the decree for Israel, To give thanks to the name of the LORD. In it are set up judgment seats, Seats for the house of David. Pray for the peace of Jerusalem! May those who love you prosper! May peace be within your walls, prosperity in your buildings. Because of my brothers and friends I will say, Peace be within you! Because of the house of the LORD, our God, I will pray for your good. Sequence (all stand) O come, O come, Emmanuel CCLI: 31982 O come, O come, Emmanuel, And ransom captive Israel, That mourns in lonely exile here Until the Son of God appear.

Refrain Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel shall come to thee, O Israel. Deacon: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint Matthew. Glory to you, Lord Christ. Holy Gospel Matthew 24:36-44 (Pew Bible p.806) Deacon: The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, Lord Christ. Sequence O come, O come, Emmanuel CCLI: 31982 Sermon (all be seated) O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free Thine own from Satan s tyranny; From depths of hell Thy people save, And give them victory over the grave. (Refrain) Nicene Creed (all stand, and recite in unison) We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father [and the Son], who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen. Prayers of the People (all kneel) The Celebrant says: Let us pray for the Church and for the world, saying, Lord, in your mercy: hear our prayer. For the peace of the whole world, and for the well-being and unity of the people of God, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. For our Archbishops, Justin and Foley, our Bishop, Keith and for our clergy and the faithful staff of our church, and for all the clergy and people of our diocese and congregation, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. For all those who proclaim the Gospel at home and abroad; and for all who teach and disciple others, let us pray to the Lord Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. For our brothers and sisters in Christ who are persecuted for their faith, let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. For our nation, for those in authority and for all in public service especially Barack, our President, Donald, our President-elect, and the members of Congress and our judges let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy, Hear our prayer. For all those who are in trouble, sorrow, need, sickness, or any other adversity especially the members of the military serving here and abroad, let us pray to the Lord. Please add your own petitions Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer.

For all the blessings of this life let us thank the Lord. Please add your own thanksgivings Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. For all those who departed this life in the certain hope of the resurrection, in thanksgiving let us pray to the Lord. Lord, in your mercy. Hear our prayer. The Celebrant concludes with the following prayer: Heavenly Father, grant these our prayers for Jesus Christ s sake, our only Mediator and Advocate, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Amen. The Exhortation Confession (in unison) Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen. Absolution Peace (all stand) The Peace of the Lord be always with you. And with your spirit. Rob our sin and make us holy, Perfect Son of God Welcome to our world. Presentation Hymn (all stand) Praise God from whom all blessings flow; Praise him, all creatures here below; Praise him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen. Old One Hundredth Sursum Corda People : People : People : The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord. Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is just and right so to do. It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you, Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth. Because you sent your beloved Son to redeem us from sin and death, and to make us heirs in him of everlasting life; that when he shall come again in power and great glory to judge the world, we may without shame or fear rejoice to behold his appearing. Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name.

Sanctus et Benedictus Karl Digerness The Prayer of Consecration (all kneel) Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy, you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He offered himself and made, once for all time, a perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted this remembrance of his passion and death, which he commanded us to continue until he comes again. So now, Father, we ask you to bless and sanctify, with your Word and Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine that we may partake of his most blessed Body and Blood. On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me. After supper, Jesus took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, Drink this, all of you; for this is my Blood of the New Covenant, which is shed for you, and for many, for the forgiveness of sins: Whenever you drink it, do this in remembrance of me. Therefore we proclaim the mystery of faith: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Lord and heavenly Father, with these holy gifts we celebrate the memorial instituted by your beloved Son, remembering his passion and death, his resurrection and ascension, and his promise to come again. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his Blood, we and your whole Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion, making us one body with him that he may dwell in us, and we in him. And here we offer to you, O Lord, ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a living sacrifice, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

By him and with him and in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and forever. Amen. The Lord s Prayer BCP p. 336 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever and ever. Amen. The Fraction Alleluia. Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Therefore let us keep the feast. Alleluia. Prayer of Humble Access We do not presume to come to this your table, merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in your abundant and great mercies. We are not worthy so much as to gather up the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord, who always delights in showing mercy. Grant us, therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat the flesh of your dear Son Jesus Christ and to drink his blood, that our sinful bodies may be made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood, and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen. Communion All baptized Christians who profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior are welcome to receive Holy Communion in this church. All who do not wish to receive are still welcome to come forward to the altar rail. You may cross your arms across your chest as an indication you do not wish to receive, and a prayer of blessing will be offered for you instead. Gluten-free wafers are available. If you would like to receive a gluten-free wafer, simply let one of the ushers know as you come forward to receive communion, and the ushers will notify the priest. Post Communion Prayer Heavenly Father, we thank you for feeding us with the spiritual food of the most precious Body and Blood of your Son our Savior Jesus Christ; and for assuring us in these holy mysteries that we are living members of the Body of your Son, and heirs of your eternal kingdom. And now, Father, send us out into the world to do the work you have given us to do, to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord. To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen. The Blessing May Almighty God, by whose providence our Savior Christ came among us in great humility, sanctify you with the light of his blessing and set you free from all sin. Amen. May he whose second Coming in power and great glory we await, make you steadfast in faith, joyful in hope, and constant in love. Amen. May you, who rejoice in the first Advent of our Redeemer, at his second Advent be rewarded with unending life. Amen.
