We pray ha all people yearning o know Chris and he Church may encouner him hrough he faihful who winess o his love in heir lives. Loving God, our Faher, srenghen us o become winesses o he saving grace of your Son, Jesus, our Lord, who lives and reigns wih you, in he uniy of he Holy Spiri, one God, for ever and ever. Amen. doing wha Jesus does

doing wha Jesus does STARTING ASSUMPTIONS making connecions when you hear he word evangelizaion, wha comes o mind? WHAT ARE SOME NEGATIVE IMAGES AND WHAT MAKES THEM NEGATIVE? WHAT ARE SOME POSITIVE IMAGES AND WHAT MAKES THEM POSITIVE? WHAT IS THE IMAGE OF EVANGELIZATION FOR YOU (POSITIVE OR NEGATIVE) AND WHY? 3

doing wha Jesus does STARTING ASSUMPTIONS how does Jesus evangelize? WHAT DOES HE DO? WHAT DOESN T HE DO? JESUS IS ALWAYS OUR PERFECT MODEL FOR EVANGELIZATION... FOLLOW HIM! EVANGELIZATION...DOING WHAT JESUS DOES Live ou of a deep personal relaionship wih he Faher. Reach ou primarily o ousiders wihou judgmen. Proclaim God s Good News in word and acion. Invie people o a new way of living in God s ways. Call, form and equip a communiy of disciples. Give your life in service and sacrifice for he world. 4

doing wha Jesus does A DEFINITION OF CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION IS... Proclaiming he Good News of Jesus Chris, in he communiy of he Church, hrough he power of he Holy Spiri, inviing personal conversion and inenional discipleship, hrough winess and proclamaion, for he ransformaion of he world. PROCLAIMING THE PERSON OF JESUS CHRIST AND HIS MESSAGE OF THE KINGDOM Evangelizaion will always conain as he foundaion, cener and a he same ime he summi of is dynamism a clear proclamaion ha, in Jesus Chris salvaion is offered o all people, as a gif of God s grace and mercy. (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 27) IN THE COMMUNITY OF THE CHURCH The Church serves he kingdom by spreading hroughou he world he gospel values which are an expression of he kingdom and which help people o accep God s plan. (John Paul II, Mission of he Redeemer, 20) THROUGH THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT I is he Spiri who opens people s hears so ha hey can believe in Chris and confess him. (John Paul II, Mission of he Redeemer, 46) INVITING PERSONAL CONVERSION AND INTENTIONAL DISCIPLESHIP The proclamaion of he Word of God has Chrisian conversion as is aim; a complee and sincere adherence o Chris and his Gospel hrough faih. (John Paul II, Mission of he Redeemer, 46) 5

doing wha Jesus does A DEFINITION OF CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION THROUGH WITNESS (LIVING THE FAITH) for he Church, he firs means of evangelizaion is he winess of an auhenically Chrisian life, given over o God in a communion ha nohing should desroy and a he same ime given o one s neighbor wih limiless zeal. (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 41) AND THROUGH PROCLAMATION (SHARING THE FAITH) Preaching, he verbal proclamaion of he message, is indeed always indispensable. (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 42) In he long run, is here any oher way of handing on he Gospel han by ransmiing o anoher person one s personal experience of faih? (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 46) FOR THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE WORLD For he Church, evangelizing means bringing he Good News ino all he sraa of humaniy, and hrough is influence ransforming humaniy from wihin and making i new: Now I am making he whole of creaion new (Rev. 21:5). (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 18) wha evangelizaion is NOT (avoiding evangelizaion pifalls) EVANGELIZATION DOES NOT TRICK OR FORCE I is no manipulaion, proselyism, arguing, shaming, sheep-salking, showiness or filling he pews. EVANGELIZATION IS NOT SHY I is no self-consciousness, laziness, inrovered, being confused, uncerain or uninformed. 6

doing wha Jesus does THE BIBLICAL AND CHURCH ROOTS OF EVANGELIZATION GOD IS THE AUTHOR OF EVANGELIZATION Evangelizaion is as old as God and comes from God! Since he beginning of ime, God has been evangelizing us by bringing us he Good News of love and relaionship, in a covenan communiy, hrough mighy power and mighy deeds, inviing he response of conversion, faih, and discipleship, hrough his words and deeds, for he renewal of he world. THE BIBLE AS THE RECORD OF GOD S EVANGELIZATION The Bible is he sory of God s evangelizing relaionship wih us. We call God s evangelizing acion wih us over ime: Salvaion Hisory. God s evangelizaion reached he highpoin in Jesus. By becoming human, God encouners us personally wih he Good News. Jesus is he perfec model of evangelizaion and discipleship raining. JESUS COMMISSIONS THE EARLY CHURCH TO EVANGELIZE Jesus calls, eaches and menors he disciples in he ways of God s evangelizaion. Jesus sends he disciples o evangelize: Go and make disciples of all naions (Mahew 28:18-20) The basic ask for which Jesus sends ou his disciples is he proclamaion of he Good News ha is evangelizaion (Mark 16:15-18). (Ecclesia in America, John Paul II, 1999) Jesus promises o send he Spiri: And I will ask he Faher, and he will give you anoher Advocae, who will never leave you. (John 14:16) 7

doing wha Jesus does THE BIBLICAL AND CHURCH ROOTS OF EVANGELIZATION THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS THE CHURCH TO CONTINUE GOD S EVANGELIZATION The Holy Spiri fills he aposles a Penecos for he work of evangelizaion. Through he power of he Spiri evangelizaion causes he Church o grow. The Aposles and S. Paul evangelize and rain ohers o evangelize. THE HOLY SPIRIT EMPOWERS THE CHURCH FOR EVANGELIZATION THROUGHOUT THE YEARS Evangelizaion is he cenral mission of he Church. Evangelizing is in fac he grace and vocaion proper o he Church, her deepes ideniy. She exiss in order o evangelize (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 14) WE CONTINUE GOD S WORK OF EVANGELIZATION TODAY (YES, I SAID WE ) The lay faihful, precisely as members of he Church, have he vocaion and mission of proclaiming he Gospel (John Paul II, Ecclesia in America, 1999) No believer in Chris, no insiuion of he Church can avoid his supreme duy: o proclaim Chris o all peoples. (John Paul II, Mission of he Redeemer, 3) Lay people also fulfill heir propheic mission by evangelizaion, ha is, he proclamaion of Chris by word and he esimony of life. For lay people, his evangelizaion acquires a specific propery and peculiar efficacy because i is accomplished in he ordinary circumsances of he world. (CCC 905) 8

doing wha Jesus does A DEFINITION OF CATHOLIC EVANGELIZATION making connecions how have you been evangelized? WHO HAS BEEN MOST SIGNIFICANT IN BRINGING YOU THE GOOD NEWS OF JESUS CHRIST? WHAT DID THEY DO AND WHY DID IT HAVE SUCH AN IMPACT ON YOU? 9

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex EXPLAINING THE NEW EVANGELIZATION THE CORE CONTENT AND MISSION OF EVANGELIZATION HAVE NOT CHANGED God s imeless work and message do no change. The Church s essenial mission of evangelizaion does no change. WHAT IS DEFINITELY NEW ARE THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF OUR CURRENT AGE The new circumsances demand a new approach. Evangelizaion occurs mos effecively when he Church engages he culure of hose she evangelizes. (U.S. Caholic Bishops, Disciples Called o Winess) The New Evangelizaion is he call o re-propose he Gospel in new ways o a pos-chrisian culure. (Benedic XVI, Homily on he Solemniy of Sains Peer and Paul) The New Evangelizaion is new in is ardor, mehods, and expression. (John Paul II, 1983 address o CELAM, Caholic Bishops of Lain America) THE NEW EVANGELIZATION INVITES US TO BE CREATIVE This variey of siuaions demands careful discernmen; o speak of a new evangelizaion does no in fac mean ha a single formula should be developed ha would hold he same for all circumsances. (Benedic XVI, Esablishing Ponifical Council for New Evangelizaion) We need o hink and behave in new ways! REMEMBER Einsein s definiion of insaniy: doing he same hing over and over and expecing a new resul! 11

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS NO COMMON CULTURAL MATRIX SUPPORTING FAITH AND RELIGION THE CULTURE SUPPORTS MANY ANTI-GOSPEL VALUES Culure of Deah: lack of respec for life, disregard for he digniy of human persons, violence, povery, aborion, euhanasia, capial punishmen, maerialism, relaivism, individualism, secularism, ec. (John Paul II, Evangelium Viae, April 1995) A WEALTH OF IGNORANCE AND MISINFORMATION ABOUT THE CATHOLIC FAITH SYSTEMATIC ATTACKS ON THE CATHOLIC FAITH SEISMIC SHIFTS IN ATTITUDES TOWARD FAITH AND THE PRACTICE OF RELIGION 12

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS key research-based findings RELIGIOUS IDENTITY IS FLUID Religious ideniy is no saic bu fluid wih every major religious group simulaneously gaining and losing paricipans. The fases growing religious demographic in he U.S. is unaffiliaed. CATHOLICISM IS STRUGGLING MIGHTILY 1 ou of 10 Americans is an ex-caholic (3rd larges denominaion afer Caholics and Bapiss). Nearly 4 imes as many aduls have lef as have joined. The annual number of adul convers has dropped 35% from 2000 o 2009 (USCCB, 2009). 32% or almos 1 of every 3 people raised Caholic no longer idenifies as Caholic. 30% of Americans raised Caholic are sill pracicing, wih abou half a Mass on a given weekend. 38% hold heir Caholic ideniy bu seldom or never aend Mass. Caholic marriage raes are plummeing. Those leaving Caholicism form 2 major groups: unaffiliaed and proesan. Only 10% of ex-caholics join non-chrisian religions. CATHOLICS WHO LEAVE DO SO VERY EARLY 79% of Caholics who become unaffiliaed are gone by he age of 23. 66% of Caholics who become proesan are gone by he age of 23. Aending religious educaion, youh groups, or even Caholic high schools made lile or no difference in wheher someone sayed or lef. 13

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS CATHOLICS BECOME PROTESTANTS BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT BEING SPIRITUALLY FED 54% of hose becoming proesan say he gradually drifed away. People who leave o become proesan do so because heir spiriual needs were no being me (71%), hey found a religion hey liked more (70%) and because hey liked he syle of worship (81%). Dissaisfacion abou spiriual needs and syle of worship dwarf disagreemen over specific docrines: aborion and homosexualiy (23%), divorce (23%), celibacy of priess (21%), birh conrol (16%), Church reamen of women (16%), povery, war and deah penaly (11%). 62% who became proesan and 74% who became evangelical fel called by God. Caholics who become proesan aend weekly services a 63% while Caholics who say aend 42% (21% difference). Caholics who become proesan say heir faih is very srong as aduls (71%) and Caholics who say say heir adul faih is very srong (46%). Caholics who become proesan lef a small percenages for sexual abuse sandal (21%) and divorce (3%). 66% of former Caholics join an evangelical church. 46% of hose becoming evangelical were focused on spiriual susenance, worship, and he Bible. Caholics who join mainline proesan churches primarily lef because heir spiriual needs were no being me (57%) which dwarf he oher reasons of Caholic eachings (20%), aborion, homosexualiy, women, divorce (31%), and birh conrol (26%). Mos Caholics who join mainline proesan communiies do so because hey married someone of he faih hey joined (44%) while only 22% of hose becoming evangelical cie his reason. Dissaisfacion wih Caholic clergy was 39% for hose joining mainline proesan churches and 23% for hose becoming evangelicals. 14

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS CATHOLICS WHO BECOME UNAFFILIATED DRIFT AWAY BUT MANY REMAIN OPEN Of hose who are unaffiliaed, 71% jus gradually drifed away, 65% sopped believing in he religion s eachings, ohers lef for he sexual abuse scandal (27%) and divorce (3%). Many unaffiliaed are open o a religious ideniy wih 33% saying hey would join a religion. MANY CATHOLICS, ESPECIALLY YOUNGER ONES, DO NOT BELIEVE IN A PERSONAL GOD Only 60% of Caholics believe in a personal God. Only 48% were absoluely cerain ha he God hey believed in was a God wih whom hey could have a personal relaionship. For hose 18-29, only 40% believe in a personal God and 34% aend Mass weekly. THE GREATER THE UNBELIEF IN A PERSONAL GOD, THE LESS MASS ATTENDANCE Imporan rends and correlaions from Cara Sudy 2007: he younger he Caholic he less hey believe in a personal God and he less hey aend Mass. THE CATHOLIC CHURCH PLACES A LOW PRIORITY ON EVANGELIZATION Asked wheher spreading he faih was a high prioriy in heir parishes: 75% Conservaive Proesan 57% African American 6% Caholic (Pillars of Faih Sudy, 2005) Asked wheher hey sponsored evangelizaion aciviies in heir parishes: 39% Conservaive Proesan 16% African American 3% Caholic Caholic pasoral pracice sill presumes ha religious ideniy is inheried and sable hroughou one s lifespan (49% of American aduls who are now evangelicals were raised ouside of evangelicalism). 15

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS MANY CATHOLICS HAVE BEEN CATECHIZED BUT NOT EVANGELIZED Many Caholics do no know he Grea Sory of Jesus (he Gospel/Kerygma). Many Caholics do no have a language for a personal relaionship wih Jesus. Many Caholics have no esablished a srong relaionship wih Chris and His Church. Many Caholics have no been equipped for a life of discipleship. REASONS FOR HOPE The majoriy who change heir childhood faih do so in a series of seps raher han a gian leap. Millions of Americans, including ex-caholics are open o a relaionship wih Jesus and His Church. There are many ripe for evangelizaion o whom we should reach ou deliberaely and inenionally: Those raised wih no faih bu are exploring heir opions, and Those who have lef heir childhood faih bu have no found he righ faih ye. The millions of religious unaffiliaed who know religion is imporan, pray regularly, and fluidly wander in and ou of our congregaions: Caholics who have lef bu are sill searching for a new religious ideniy, and Dissaisfied Caholics who have no ye lef bu are considering doing so. 16

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE NEW CURRENT CULTURAL TRENDS making connecions ying our evangelizaion ino rends and research BASED ON THE GENERAL TRENDS, KEY RESEARCH FINDINGS AND TARGET GROUPS, HOW DO WE NEED TO SHAPE THE NEW EVANGELIZATION? WHAT SHOULD BE OUR TOP PRIORITIES? WHAT SHOULD BE OUR LEADING CREATIVE STRATEGIES TO ADDRESS THESE PRIORITIES? 17

doing wha Jesus does o form disciples

doing wha Jesus does o form disciples THE EVANGELIZATION CYCLE making connecions evangelizaion as falling ino deep discipleship love WHAT ARE THE STAGES OF FALLING IN LOVE WITH SOMEONE? 19

doing wha Jesus does in a new conex THE EVANGELIZATION CYCLE evangelizaion: falling ino deep discipleship love EVANGELIZATION IS PERSONALLY FALLING DEEPER AND DEEPER IN LOVE WITH CHRIST Faih is above all a personal, inimae, encouner wih Jesus, and o experience his closeness, his friendship, his love; only in his way does one learn o know him ever more, and o love and follow him ever more. May his happen o each one of us. (Benedic XVI, General Audience, Ocober 21, 2009) EVANGELIZATION IS A SERIES OF STAGES, MOMENTS OR THRESHOLDS ON THE WAY TO FULL COMMITMENT John 9:1-38, series of seps aken by he blind man on he way o full commimen. The essenial elemens of evangelizaion are disribued hroughou a complex process of sages or momens. (Naional Direcory for Caechesis, p. 49) Any parial and fragmenary definiion which aemps o render he realiy of evangelizaion in all is richness, complexiy and dynamism does so only a he risk of impoverishing i and even disoring i. I is impossible o grasp he concep of evangelizaion unless one ries o keep in view all is essenial elemens. (Paul VI, On Evangelizaion in he Modern World, 17) EVANGELIZATION IS A CYCLE OF STAGES THAT CONTINUES TO REPEAT FOR ALL OF US 20

doing wha Jesus does o form disciples THE EVANGELIZATION CYCLE 1 PRE-EVANGELIZATION: MINGLING AT THE PARTY definiion Person comes wih heir sory and heir needs o mingle a he fringes of he Church communiy and check hings ou conversion hreshold = iniial rus Person is seeking a posiive rusworhy associaion wih Jesus, he Church, believers charism needed: hospialiy Be a channel of God s love by inviing, welcoming, caring for needs and lisening o he person s sory pracical evangelizaion A personal meeing wih each new member 2 EVANGELIZATION: INITIAL FEELINGS OF CURIOSITY AND ATTRACTION definiion Person feels a preliminary rus level and is araced o he Grea Sory of Jesus and how i is lived in he Church communiy conversion hreshold = spiriual curiosiy Person is inrigued o know more abou he Good News of Jesus and he Church charism needed: mercy Be a channel of God s love by becoming a living example of he Kingdom and is King pracical evangelizaion A small group sudy on a Gospel (elling he Kerygma) 21

doing wha Jesus does o form disciples THE EVANGELIZATION CYCLE making connecions linking our evangelizaion sraegies o he sages WHAT ARE SOME STRATEGIC NEW EVANGELIZATION ACTIVITIES FOR EACH STAGE? 24

doing wha Jesus does o form disciples STRATEGIES FOR EVANGELIZATION THERE ARE THREE PRINCIPAL TARGET GROUPS FOR THE MISSION OF EVANGELIZATION The 3 objecives of mission of evangelizaion are (John Paul II, Mission of he Redeemer, 33): 1 To proclaim he Gospel o all people and culures where Chris and he Gospel are no known. 2 3 To help bring abou he reconversion of he bapized who have los a sense of he faih, no longer consider hemselves members of he Church, and live a life far removed from Chris and His Gospel. To deepen he Gospel in he lives of believers who are ferven in heir faih and Chrisian living. in he parish UNDERSTAND THE CULTURAL TRENDS, RESEARCH AND EVANGELIZATION CYCLE! ORGANIZING AN EFFECTIVE EVANGELIZATION TEAM: Creae an evangelizaion leadership eam. Teams make he mission of evangelizaion explici, inenional, planned, and evaluaed. Aim for six consisen commied members: Submi o our daabase. Form a eam ha can work wih and hrough he overall parish srucure. Do argeed recruiing for commiee members, inviing hem personally. Collaborae wih Pasoral Council and saff: ideal o have liaisons from boh groups. Repor and be accounable o pasor and Pasoral Council. Have a connecion o parish resources and communicaion. 25
