Ps 105 (104): 3-4, 5 Glory in his holy name; let the hearts that seek the Lord rejoice. Turn to the Lord and his strength; remember the wonders he has done. Collect O God, who in the power of the Holy Spirit have sent your Word to announce good news to the poor, grant that, with eyes fixed upon him, we may ever live in sincere charity, made heralds and witnesses of his Gospel in all the world. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Fall 2012 The Mass and Its Parts Navigating the Roman Missal The pastoral effectiveness of a celebration will be greatly increased if the texts of the readings, the prayers, and the liturgical chants correspond as aptly as possible to the needs, the preparation, and the culture of the participants. THE LITURGY OF THE WORD First reading The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love him. A reading from the book of Sirach 34: 9-20 A much-traveled person knows many things; and one with much experience speaks sense. An inexperienced person knows little, whereas with travel one adds to resourcefulness. I have seen much in my travels, and learned more than I could ever say. Often I was in danger of death, but by these experiences I was saved. Living is the spirit of those who fear the Lord, for their hope is in their savior. Whoever fear the Lord are afraid of nothing and are never discouraged, for he is their hope. Happy the soul that fears the Lord! In whom does he trust, and who is his support? The eyes of the Lord are upon those who love him; he is their mighty shield and strong support, a shelter from the heat, a shade from the noonday sun, a guard against stumbling, a help against falling. He lifts up spirits, brings a sparkle to the eyes, gives health and life and blessing. page 2 of 10

Or: The works of the Lord are full of his glory. A reading from the book of Sirach 42: 17-24 Yet even God s holy ones must fail in recounting the wonders of the Lord, Though God has given his hosts the strength to stand firm before his glory. He searches out the abyss and penetrates the heart; their innermost being he understands. The Most High possesses all knowledge, and sees from of old the things that are to come: He makes known the past and the future, and reveals the deepest secrets. No understanding does he lack; no single thing escapes him. Perennial is his almighty wisdom; he is from all eternity one and the same, With nothing added, nothing taken away; no need of a counselor for him! How beautiful are all his works! even to the spark and fleeting vision! The universe lives and abides forever; to meet each need, each creature is preserved. All of them differ, one from another, yet none of them has he made in vain. page 3 of 10

During Easter Time: MASS FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION We are witnesses of all that the Lord did. A reading from the Acts of the Apostles 10: 34a. 36-43 Then Peter proceeded to speak, saying: You know the word that he sent to the children of Israel as he proclaimed peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all, what has happened all over Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John preached, how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power. He went about doing good and healing all those oppressed by the Devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses of all that he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree. This man God raised on the third day and granted that he be visible, not to all the people, but to us, the witnesses chosen by God in advance, who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commissioned us to preach to the people and testify that he is the one appointed by God as judge of the living and the dead. To him all the prophets bear witness, that everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. page 4 of 10

Or: Jesus Christ opened for us the new and living way. A reading from the letter to the Hebrews 10: 19-25 Brothers and sisters, since through the Blood of Jesus we have confidence of entrance into the sanctuary by the new and living way he opened for us through the veil, that is, his Flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us approach with a sincere heart and in absolute trust, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed in pure water. Let us hold unwaveringly to our confession that gives us hope, for he who made the promise is trustworthy. We must consider how to rouse one another to love and good works. We should not stay away from our assembly, as is the custom of some, but encourage one another, and this all the more as you see the day drawing near. page 5 of 10

Responsorial Psalm 22 (21): 26-27ab, 28ab, 30c, 31-32 R. I will tell of your name to my kin. You are my praise in the great assembly. My vows I will pay before those who fear him. The poor shall eat and shall have their fill. They shall praise the Lord, those who seek him. R. I will tell of your name to my kin. All the earth shall remember and return to the Lord, And my soul shall live for him, my descendents serve him. R. I will tell of your name to my kin. They shall tell of the Lord to generations yet to come, declare his saving justice to peoples yet unborn: These are the things the Lord has done. R. I will tell of your name to my kin. page 6 of 10

Second reading Be renewed in the spirit of your minds. A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Ephesians 4: 23-32 Brothers and sisters: Be renewed in the spirit of your minds, and put on the new self, created in God s way in righteousness and holiness of truth. Therefore, putting away falsehood, speak the truth, each one to his neighbor, for we are members one of another. Be angry but do not sin; do not let the sun set on your anger, and do not leave room for the devil. The thief must no longer steal, but rather labor, doing honest work with his own hands, so that he may have something to share with one in need. No foul language should come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for needed edification, that it may impart grace to those who hear. And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were sealed for the day of redemption. All bitterness, fury, anger, shouting, and reviling must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind to one another, compassionate, forgiving one another as God has forgiven you in Christ. page 7 of 10

Or: Put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. A reading from the letter of Saint Paul to the Colossians 3: 12-17 Brothers and sisters: Put on then, as God s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another; as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do. And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one Body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him. page 8 of 10

Gospel Acclamation Cf. Acts 5: 42 R. Alleluia. All day long, both at the temple and in their homes, they did not stop teaching and proclaiming the Christ, Jesus. R. Alleluia. Gospel The Spirit of the Lord is upon me. A reading from the holy Gospel according to Luke 4: 14-22a Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news of him spread throughout the whole region. He taught in their synagogues and was praised by all. He came to Nazareth, where he had grown up, and went according to his custom into the synagogue on the sabbath day. He stood up to read and was handed a scroll of the prophet Isaiah. He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was written: The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to let the oppressed go free, and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord. Rolling up the scroll, he handed it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently at him. He said to them, Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing. And all spoke highly of him and were amazed at the gracious words that came from his mouth. The Gospel of the Lord. page 9 of 10

Prayer over the Offerings MASS FOR THE NEW EVANGELIZATION Graciously sanctify these gifts, we pray, O Lord, and kindly receive our humble offering, that our bodies may become a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to you, and grant that we may serve you in newness of life, not according to the old humanity but according to your Spirit. Through Christ our Lord. *** Communion Antiphon Cf. Lk 4: 18-19 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, for he has anointed me to announce the good news, to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord, and a day of redemption. Prayer after Communion Having renewed us in mind by the nourishment of the precious Body and Blood of your Son, graciously grant us, O Lord, a changed heart and a new spirit that we may walk with perseverance in newness of life. Through Christ our Lord. page 10 of 10
