July 2017 Hilton United Methodist Church Pastor s Corner In April, an email was sent out to the entire congregation regarding the development of an Outreach or Marketing Team for Hilton United Methodist Church. In that email, I was aware of how uncomfortable the term Marketing is to the church. Because of this uncomfort, Church Council wanted to call this new team Outreach and I announced this in the email. However, after prayer and study it was brought to my attention that we need to call this initiative what it is, Marketing. Outreach as a concept that typically refers to Mission. Our Summer Cadet Cupboard and Sharing Supper ministries would be considered outreach. This would lead to confusion as Marketing involves promoting ourselves within the community and developing a target audience in order to Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World. In April, Church Council voted and approved the development of a Marketing Team. I invite to you be in prayer for the members of the Marketing Team: Ed Earnhart Web-site development Sue Emerson Research Jim Butts Contacts Pastor Jennifer Green Ed, Sue, and Jim will be actively recruiting people who might feel called to work on a temporary team to develop each area in our marketing plan. If you have expertise or a passion for any of these areas, please do not hesitate to call them. This is not a 4 person effort, our marketing initiative will be an entire congregation effort in the year to come. Our Team Mission is: Targeting the unchurched of the community of Hilton and surrounding areas. Reaching out to them in love and grace. Drawing people into connection with God. Nurturing people in Discipleship of Jesus Christ. Transforming lives and our community. I want to thank Ed Earnhart for discovering and taking initiative to apply for 2 different grants from the General United Methodist Church in Nashville, TN. We were accepted for a Website Development Grant and a Marketing Grant. Both of these grants are not monetary, but are for goods and services to help us develop a new and improved web-site and a clear marketing initiative. They will give us support and Continued 1

Pastor s message continued structure to accomplish our task. This is our Fair Share Giving at work. It pays to pay 100% of our Fair Share Giving and these are those dollars at work for the local church. The General Church will help us to have clear research of our surrounding community and develop a clear marketing target. As we explore who our target at Hilton United Methodist Church might be, I want to caution ourselves. Our target might not look like us. Our target might not be middle class and all put together. Let s face it; who of any of us, if we are honest, have it all together? I want to emphasize that our marketing initiative is not just to put butts in the pews and more money in the general fund. Our marketing initiative is much deeper and is truly designed to fulfill our Mission: Make Disciples of Jesus Christ for the Transformation of the World and our Vision: Following Christ, Connecting Generations, Transforming Communities. Often following the call of Jesus the Christ takes us places we never even expected or dreamed would happen. Please be in continued prayer for our congregation as we seek to further develop our individual relationships with Jesus Christ, pursue social justice in a hurting world and follow God s call upon our individual lives. See you in worship, Pastor Jennifer SAVE THE DATE!!! We will then gather for a time of fellowship and fun at our church picnic. Come to the CHURCH PICNIC on Sunday, July 30 th following church, at the HESS pavilion at the Parma Town Park. The children's playground is right across the parking area. Bring a dish to pass. Hot dogs, rolls, condiments, lemonade, water and table service will be provided. Bring a game. Bring lawn chairs. To get to the HESS pavilion, turn into the north entrance, then turn left. The HESS pavilion is the first one on the left. Coffeehour Help Needed: Greetings Church Family! Summer is here and it is time to think about volunteering to provide goodies for HUMC coffee hour. There is a signup sheet in the Narthex. It has places for two people to sign up for each Sunday. It is very helpful to have a helper to set up, provide goodies and clean up. From September to June the church committees take a turn or two to provide our coffee hour goodies. During the summer, it is on an individual basis. Please look at your calendars and pick a date that you can help. The Knitting Ministry will not be meeting during the Summer, but we still be knitting hats for fall and winter season. We will resume our regular times starting on September 5 th. We will then be meeting every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month from 12 noon until 3:00p.m. 3

Unafraid and Unashamed Pastor Jennifer is offering a summer reading and discussion group on the book Unafraid and Unashamed by Will Cantrell. Please see the June newsletter at www.humcny.org for more information. Pastor will be holding group discussion on Wednesday, July 19 th at 7:00 pm and Monday, August 14 th at 7:00 pm. You don t need to attend both groups, they are standalone times. There are a few books available in the church office for $20, or you may order your own. Hope you enjoy the reading. Youth News! Greetings all! The school year is over but great memories have come from it. We went back to basics in both SLAM and Lighthouse concentrating on Jesus and His teachings. We worked on the Lords Prayer as well as Holy Communion to name a few. Its amazing to watch how much one year can do to a youths maturity physically, emotionally and spiritually. It doesn't end there! We are in the midst of planning our years biggest event... KINGDOM BOUND 2017!!! The youth can't wait. Before we get to that, I am planning the schedule for the Hilton Fireman's Carnival. I NEED HELP. We will be sending out a signup Genius soon and hope to fill the spots quickly. The carnival will run from July 12th-15th. If you are able, please help! Lighthouse planted the community garden with hopes that it will be fruitful. Thank you all for your continued prayers and encouragement. God is surely doing amazing things in Hilton and especially with the Youth at Hilton United Methodist Church. In Him, Joe Neri Youth Director HUMC Fund Raiser at Hilton Fireman s Carnival to Benefit the Youth Group Our Youth Group needs your help. We are sponsoring an activity booth at the Hilton Fireman s Carnival on July 12 th to 15 th. We NEED people to staff this booth. It is not hard, but you can greatly impact the ability of our church to take our youth to life changing events, like Kingdom Bound and Mission Trips. Please see Joe Neri or go to Sign-up Genius. 4

Now Disciple Fast Track maintains the integrity and principles of the original study, but its modifications can better meet the needs of a hectic world. Participants still receive a thorough introduction to the Bible, but in almost a third less time. Fast Track is not a replacement for the original; it is simply a practical option. Dan and Pat Van Vleck will be leading this 24-week study on Sundays following worship from approximately 11:30am to 12:45pm. We will cover the Old Testament in the Fall, beginning September 10 th and finishing before Thanksgiving. We will start up again in January for the New Testament and be done by Easter. There are daily reading assignments to be done by you throughout the study. On Sundays, there will be a brief, illustrated review video enables participants to recall important facts and ideas; video presenters then offer insights into the current week s session, then our group will have question to discuss. This group is open to everyone NO bible study experience or knowledge is needed. Just a desire to learn God s Word and grow closer to Jesus. Please let Pat (van4bs@gmail.com) know if you are interested in participating. Information about the book will be available closer to September. Please note: This is in addition to the Adult Sunday School class that already meets and is led by Bob Comstock. 5

Mid - Year Treasurer s Report Thank you again for your generous giving this year OUR CHURCH has accomplished much this year, and is implementing plans to do much more. We track Key Financial Points each month to assure we stay on target for our spending plans. 3 of the key areas are: All Ministry Shares, Health Premiums and Retire Premiums are paid each month. We have paid all premiums through May All Repeating expenses (i.e. Salaries, RG&E, Copier service, Church Mutual insurances, Internet services etc.. The list of Repeating Monthly expenses is long) are all paid to date. Weekly Pledges versus the weekly Actual pledges that have been received to date, is plus $10,000 year to date. THANK YOU!!!!!!!! The weekly pledges are critical since our Repeating expenses do not take the Summer off. I must mention that we have not met our Pledge Goals in 3 of the last 6 weeks. We appreciate whatever you could do to help in this area. Sanctuary Fund Update: One of the major accomplishment that the Church has completed in the first half of the year is the updating of the Sanctuary. These improvements were more than just the Painting and Carpeting... as Ed Earnhardt has listed in other reports. As Ed mentioned, in order to accomplish these projects in a timely manner, we borrowed funds from our Endowment Fund with plans to repay the fund before the end of this year. To date your donations have permitted us to pay off 75% of the loan. currently we need to raise $5600 to pay off the loan by the end of the year. I am confident the Church will be successful in meeting this goal. I want to thank each of you for your ongoing generosity!! If you have any questions pertaining to the finances of the Church, please contact me. May God s grace abound, Dennis Sneddon If you are interested. On the next page is a form to fill out for Electronic Funds transfer 7
