Archdiocese of Chicago + Strategic Pastoral Plan May 19, 2013 Pentecost Today, Saint Paul says the Holy Spirit makes us God s adopted sons and daughters who cry out Abba, Father! When has the celebration of the Mass led me to an especially strong sense of belonging to God s family?

The living and ascended Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit upon his disciples, fulfilling his promise to send another Counselor. With a lively wind like the creative breath of God in the first chapter of Genesis, the Spirit energized the disciples. The Spirit of Truth showed them the meaning of the Old Testament, the significance of Jesus life and death, and baptized them with power to bring the Truth to the people of the world. They demonstrated this power by speaking in languages understood by the visitors to Jerusalem from all over the ancient world. The History: St. Paul celebrated Passover-Easter with the Philippians, then hurried to keep Pentecost in Jerusalem (Acts 20: 6, 16). In early centuries of the Western Church. Pentecost was the last call for baptisms for those who were not able to be baptized on Easter. Baptisms took place on the Saturday vigil, as at Easter, and included many of the same lessons and prayers. In the Middle ages, a variety of local customs developed around Pentecost. Roses were dropped from rafters to simulate the tongues of fire. Trumpets were sounded to recall the sound of the rushing wind. In Italy, the day was called pasqua arossa from the red vestments. Most widespread was the use of a dove to represent the Holy Spirit. A live dove was set free inside the church to fly off or a carved one was let down by a rope from the roof. Pentecost partying became widespread in England and Germany and, later, among the slaves and white settlers of the colonies of the New World. The Symbols: Tongues of Fire appeared to hover over the disciples on Pentecost as a sign of the Lord s presence and power. In Old Testament times fire was often the sign of God s presence (Moses met the Lord at the burning bush) and of God s holiness, which may purify or punish. Red is the liturgical color for Pentecost Day. Red traditionally reminds us of the offering of life our lives in the service of our Lord. Baptism is tied to receiving the Holy Spirit in the New Testament. John the Baptist talked about a baptism with the Holy Spirit and with fire which Jesus would bring. And when Jesus was baptized with water by John, the Spirit descended like a dove above him. (Luke 3: 15-22).

The faculty and school families join the parish staff and fellow parishioners to form a living Catholic faith community. Our school population is multicultural and fosters sensitivity to the needs of all. We promote the students burning desire for learning. Through education, service, support, formation and challenge, the students are called to realize their potential spiritually, socially, and intellectually. For one hundred years our school has been committed to carry out the Gospel values of Jesus Christ on a daily basis. NEW MASS TIMES As of June 1, 2013 our DAILY MASS (Monday through Saturday) will begin at 7:30 am. The only exception would be Friday, June 7, 2013, last day of school, at 8:15 am. Church doors will be opened at 6:45 am. 2013 Mass Book There are about 80 Masses left between June and December of this year. We need these filled before we open up the 2014 Mass book. Please stop by the rectory to reserve your Masses. Mary at Mass by Paul Turner Devotion to Mary remains a hallmark of the Catholic faith. Some people unfamiliar with our religion assume that prayer to Mary forms the backbone of the Mass. Wrong! Prayer to Mary is certainly the backbone of the rosary, but there isn't a single prayer addressed to Mary in the entire Mass, front to back, on any day of the liturgical year. When it comes to prayer, we acknowledge Hebrews 7:25, which says Christ lives for ever to make intercession for us. So we direct our prayers to God through Christ. However, because of Mary's central role in salvation history, she makes several appearances in the Mass texts every Mass, every day of the liturgical year. Most important, Mary's name is pronounced right in the heart of Mass in the eucharistic prayer. She is called by two titles made mystic by their juxtaposition: virgin and mother. In the second eucharistic prayer for children, she is also called "Mother of God and our mother." Mary also appears in the Creed, as the virgin who gave birth to the Word made flesh. At times we celebrate a Mass in her honor, under a title like Mary, Mother of the Church, or to commemorate an event in her life, like the Visitation. A preface often prayed on these days echoes her song of praise, the Magnificat. But most frequently she is remembered as the Virgin Mother. By connecting these two titles of Mary, the church invites us to reflect on her son. Mary's special role as the Virgin Mother reminds us that the miraculous birth of Jesus introduced the world to an extraordinary child whose miracles would never cease. At first, the title "Mother of God" sounds wrong. God is the uncreated creator of all. How could God have a mother? That puzzling question draws us into a deeper meditation on the identity of Jesus. Because Jesus is both fully God and fully human, Mary must be called Mother of God. In the liturgy Mary's role always bows to her son. She gives birth to him not only in time but in the liturgy and in our hearts. During the month of May, many will address devotions to Mary, and rightly so. But she will direct them to Christ.
