ABSTRACT This study entitled Myth Symbols in the Movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief mainly aims at observing the myth symbols found in the movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and discovering the meanings of the myth symbols. It is very interesting to investigate Jung s archetypal theory that has something to do with stories of myth. The study is directed to answer two basic questions: what symbols of myth are found in the movie? and what are the meanings of the myth symbols found in the movie?. There were two aims of the study: to find out the myth symbols in the movie and to analyze the meanings of the myth symbols. The data were collected through the observation and documentation methods where the data were taken from the internet by downloading the movie Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and the script fragments were made based on the whole parts of the movie. The data were analyzed qualitatively and descriptively based on the Theory of Archetypes proposed by Jung and the Theory of Myths proposed by Frye. The myth symbols found in the movie were classified into three categories. These three categories were weapons, natural elements, and mythical creatures. The first category was weapons; it consists of sword, shield, bow and arrow, trident, and lightning bolt. The second category was natural elements; it consists of water, fire, wind, cloud, and lightning. The third category was mythical creature; it consists of satyr, minotaur, centaur, nymph, Medusa, Hydra, Charon, and hellhound. The finding shows that many archetypes can be observed through all of the symbols and expressed in the story of myth. Generally, there are three main types of the archetype; they are character archetypes, situational archetypes, and symbolic archetypes. In addition, they all can be connected to the seasons of the year such as spring, summer, autumn, and winter; and to the genres of a story such as comedy, romance, tragedy, and irony.
