THE PERSON OF THE LEADER IT IS MORE IMPORTANT TO ENHANCE GOD S REPUTATION IN WHAT YOU DO FOR HIM THAN HOW MUCH YOU ACCOMPLISH IN HIS NAME.

Redemptive Leadership - Influencing through who we are: Effective spiritual ministry flows out of being, and God is concerned with our being. As a leader, you should recognize that God is continually developing you over a lifetime. His top priority is to conform you to the image of Christ for ministry with spiritual authority. Enduring fruitfulness flows out of being. Dr. Robert Clinton

Dave Logan MoneyWatch Actual leadership does not have formulas, checklists or a step-by-step solution. It does, however, have actions that leaders take after careful consideration.

THE HEART OF THE LEADER The heart of the leader directly impacts his or her ability to lead. The heart of the leader sets the tone for the organizational culture. The organizational culture directly impacts the way people experience the organization which effects their commitment and productivity.

Luke 6:45 The good man brings forth good things, out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of the heart his mouth speaks.

I Samuel 16:6-7 Whey they arrived, Samuel saw Eliab and thought, Surely the Lord s anointed stands here before the Lord, BUT the Lord said to Samuel, Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.

Psalm 139:23-24 Search me, O God, and know my heart, test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there be any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.

Proverbs 4:23 Above all else, guard your heart, for it is the wellspring of life.

II Chronicles 16:9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.

C.S. LEWIS We remove the organ and demand the function we make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise we laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst.

INFLUENCE WITHOUT MATURITY IS AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ABUSE

I Timothy 4:16 Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

Dee Hock Founder of Visa It is the management of the self that should occupy 50 percent of our time and the best of our ability. And when we do that, the ethical, moral, and spiritual elements of leadership are inescapable.

The first and paramount responsibility of anyone who purports to manage (lead) is to manage self: one s own integrity, character, ethics, knowledge, wisdom, temperament, words and acts. It is a complex, unending, incredibly difficult, oft-shunned task.without management of self no one is fit for authority no matter how much they acquire, for the more authority they acquire the more dangerous they become

THE PRACTICE OF LEADERSHIP

SOME BIBLICAL REALITIES ABOUT LEADERSHIP

SOME KEY NEW TESTAMENT PASSAGES Jesus Gave Instruction About Leadership Jesus Gave A Warning About Leadership The Epistles Addressed Leaders About Leadership

JESUS GAVE INSTRUCTION ABOUT LEADERSHIP MATT 20:25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. [26] Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, [27] and whoever wants to be first must be your slave-- [28] just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

MATTHEW 20:25 Jesus called them together and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them.

MATTHEW 20:26-27 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--

MATTHEW 20:26-27 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--

MATTHEW 20:26-27 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave--

JESUS ROAD TO LEADERSHIP SUCCESS Great First... Servant... Slave...

JESUS ROAD TO LEADERSHIP SUCCESS SERVANT GREAT SLAVE FIRST

MATTHEW 20:28 just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.

MAX DuPREE THE FIRST TASK OF A LEADER IS TO DEFINE REALITY THE SECOND IS TO SAY THANK-YOU IN BETWEEN TO BE A DEBTOR AND A SERVANT Notice it is not to cast vision

JOHN 13:13-15 [13]You call me `Teacher' and `Lord,' and rightly so, for that is what I am. [14] Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. [15] I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you.

JESUS GAVE A WARNING ABOUT LEADERSHIP

MATTHEW 23:1-7 [3] But do not do what they do.they do not practice what they preach. [4] They tie up heavy loads and put them on men's shoulders... [5] Everything they do is done for men to see: [6] they love the place of honor and the most important seats [7] they love to be greeted... and to [be called ]`Rabbi.

THE EPISTLES ADDRESSED LEADERS ABOUT LEADERSHIP

1 PETER 5:1-3 [1] To the elders [2] Be shepherds of God s flock that is under your care not because you must but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but willing to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.

Key Principles Leadership is not about influence or getting influencers it is about knowing THE INFLUENCER SO HE CAN DEMONSTRATE HIS CHARACTER THROUGH YOU. PSALM 146:3-4 The Kings HEART is in the hand of the Lord; He turns it wherever He wills

KEY PRINCIPLES LEADERS ARE NOT OUT TO MAKE A NAME BUT TO GLORIFY A NAME LEADERS UNLEASH AND SET FREE NOT SHAMING AND BLAMING LEADERS CREATE A CULTURE OF SHALOM (SAFETY AND SECURITY) LEADERS PRODUCE HOPE AND NOT FEAR LEADERS ARE CONGRUENT WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET

JESUS TAUGHT AND MODELED SERVANT LEADERSHIP He warned against Leadership that demands service Matthew 23 He taught Leadership that provides service Matthew 20; John 13

We must recognize that WE HAVE A CULTURE THAT EXPECTS AND REQUIRES MORE THAN WE CAN GIVE

DEFINITION OF BURNOUT A STATE OF MENTAL, EMOTIONAL, AND PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION THE RESULT OF REPEATED EMOTIONAL PRESSURES, OFTEN ASSOCIATED WITH INTENSE INVOLVEMENT WITH PEOPLE OVERLONG PERIODS OF TIME

KEY FEELINGS OF BURNOUT HELPLESSNESS HOPELESSNESS LACK OF ENTHUSIASM ENTRAPMENT

PHYSICAL EXHAUSTION CHRONIC FATIGUE WEARINESS WEARY DURING THE DAY

MENTAL EXHAUSTION NEGATIVE OR CRITICAL ATTITUDE TOWARDS ONE S SELF, WORK, AND LIFE FEELS INADEQUATE, INCOMPETENT AND INFERIOR

SPIRITUAL EXHAUSTION LACK OF INTEREST IN PRAYER AND BIBLE STUDY A GRIND IT OUT APPROACH TO PREPARATION

PHASES OF BURNOUT THE HONEYMOON EXCESSIVE ENTHUSIASM HIGH ENERGY STRONG DESIRE TO SUCCEED

STAGNATION ENERGY LEVEL WANES IDEALISM WEARS OFF LIFE OUTSIDE WORK IS A NECESSARY ESCAPE

FRUSTRATION WITH CHRONIC PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS PHYSICAL AND EMOTIONAL FATIGUE

APATHY PROGRESSIVE EMOTIONAL DETATCHMENT BOREDOM INDIFFERENCE NEGATIVISM

CRISIS SELF-DOUBT EXTREME PHYSICAL SYMPTOMS COLLAPSE MAY OCCUR

HITTING THE WALL MAY BE A POST-BURNOUT PHASE VIOLENCE SUICIDAL THOUGHTS DRASTIC LIFESTYLE CHANGES--CHANGE CAREERS MOST PEOPLE CYCLE BACK THROUGH THE FIVE PREVIOUS STAGES

Proposition: Your spiritual, psychological, physical, social, and emotional health are the most important resources you bring to ministry. We must exercise adequate self-care (BOUNDARIES) in order to be responsible in the stewardship God has called us to.

JESUS SET BOUNDARIES Jesus did not seem to have a problem with saying NO.

Matthew 21:23-27 By what authority are you doing these things?, they said, And who gave you this authority? Jesus replied, I will also ask you a question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John s baptism---where did it come from? Was it from heaven, or from men?

So they answered Jesus, We don t know. Then he said, NEITHER WILL I TELL YOU BY WHAT AUTHORITY I AM DOING THESE THINGS.

JESUS CHOSE TO HAVE BOUNDARIES BY VIRTUE OF HIS INCARNATION He ate, drank, rested and slept (Matt.4:6-7; 26:18, 20; John 12:2) Support from Friends (Matt. 26:36-38) Solitude (Jesus got away from the crowds) Singular focus (this people, this place, this time) MK. 1:38 Pace of Life (no hurry constant state of Shalom) John 11:6; Mark 10:32

Jesus said NO to inappropriate behavior Demands that were unreasonable (Luke 5:15-16) Baiting Questions (Matthew 21:23-27; 22:15-22) Manipulation (Matthew 16:23)

Jesus spoke Truth in Love to those stuck or wrong Exploitation (Matthew 21:12-17, John 2:12-16) Addiction (Matthew 19:16-21) Misguided (Matthew 19:13-15)

Jesus had expectations for people in need. What do you want? (Matthew 20:29-34) Do you want to get well? (John 5:1-14) Do you believe? (Mark 9:17-27)

Jesus offered grace and truth as needed John 8:1-11 (to the humble and broken) To the proud and self-righteous
