Dear Friends, PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND AND BIBLICAL JORDAN On that first Easter Sunday afternoon, Jesus met up with two of his disciples walking on the road to Emmaus, Cleopas and a friend, and interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself (Luke 24:27). To see the land of the Bible, Israel, Jordan, Palestine, to hear the Scriptures there, taking in the hills and plains, the seas and deserts, with fellow Christians is more than a vacation, more than a study tour; it s truly a pilgrimage. The Biblical lands are often called an additional book of the Bible. When you see the road from Jericho to Jerusalem, how wild the wilderness still is today the parable of the Good Samaritan takes on new life. When you stand by the Sea of Galilee, waves lapping on the shore, and with Peter hear Jesus speak, Do you love me? Jesus will speak to you. When you renew your baptismal vows at the Jordan, at the lowest point on earth, your spirit will be lifted into the heavens where Christ is. When you encounter the churches built as pilgrimage sites, and see how Christians have worshipped the Lord in those places, you will feel connected to our Christian forbearers and to Christians around the world. As we travel together, we will learn much from our Christian guide, we will enjoy rich times of worship, and your faith will be profoundly enriched and enlivened as you see the reality of the Bible. We will be there just after Easter, in early May. It will be spring, with warm weather but not yet the heat of summer, and the land will be in bloom. This will be my third journey to the Land. I spent the summer of 1986 there as a college student, which changed the course of my life and ministry. I returned in 2016 as a pilgrim with many from my parish, Emmaus Anglican Church in Castle Rock, Colorado. This time, it will be my joy to be your pilgrimage leader, nourishing your mind and your spirit. Consider yourself invited! EMMAUS ANGLICAN CHURCH MAY 5 THROUGH 17, 2019 Day 1 - May 5: Depart Your Home City This is your departure date from the United States to Tel Aviv. While airfare is not included in the cost of the tour, we do offer a Concierge Airline Service to help with your reservations. Day 4 May 8: Nazareth and Cana Today, our focus will be on Jesus life and ministry at his hometown of Nazareth, where we visit Nazareth Village, the Day 2 - May 6: Arrive in Tel Aviv Overnight in Netanya Upon arrival at Tel Aviv s Ben Gurion airport you will be met by your local Christian guide. We will then transfer to the Seasons Hotel in Netanya for dinner and overnight. The Seasons Hotel is located on the Mediterranean Sea, with breathtaking views of the coastline. 1 Night Day 3 - May 7: Caesarea Maritima, Mount Carmel, and Megiddo Our day begins at Caesarea Maritima, a completely man made harbor city of Roman times. The city is a beautiful and amazing excavated site where Paul was held prisoner for two years. We then move up the coast to Mount Carmel Basilica of the Annunciation, the Mount of Precipice where a crowd was ready to throw him over the edge. Then we travel to Galilee via Cana, where we will have an opportunity for a short renewal of marriage vows at the church in Cana, the site of our Lord s first miracle changing of water into wine at a wedding (John 2:1-10). Day 5 - May 9: Sea of Galilee Much of Jesus ministry took place around the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Today, we ll visit Kursi National Park, where Jesus met the man oppressed by a legion of demons and cast them into a herd of pigs. We ll see the lovely church and mount of Beatitudes and meditate on what it means to be one of his disciples. Just down the hill from there in Tabgha is the Church of the Multiplication of Loaves and Fishes. Capernaum, home to Peter and Andrew, was Jesus center of operations. in Israel s largest national park, where the prophet Elijah squared off against the prophets of Baal. We ll begin our journey into the Jezreel valley with a visit ancient Megiddo one of the most ancient settlements in the whole of the middle-east, home of the famed Armageddon. PILGRIMAGE TO THE HOLY LAND AND BIBLICAL JORDAN Day 6 - May 10: Sea of Galilee On our second day around the sea, we ll visit the place in Tabgha where Jesus restored Peter to his service with that of ancient Israel s struggles with the Canaanites. We ll round out the day at Jericho, thought by many to be the oldest continually inhabited city on earth, and a visit to Mount of Temptation Monastery, right on the edge of the desert, commemorating Jesus battle with Satan. Then, we cross the Allenby Bridge into Jordan, to stay at the luxurious The Marriott Dead Sea. 2 Nights at the Marriott Day 8 - May 12: Jordan It s Sunday, and we ll visit Bethany beyond the Jordan. There are twenty Christian sites here claiming ties to the actual place where Jesus was baptized. Here, at the bottom of the earth, we really get of sense of where Elijah and John the famous breakfast of fish by the sea. We ll also visit Bethsaida, one of the three main towns Jesus ministered in, as well as Magdala, home to one of the first witnesses to the resurrection, Mary Magdalene. Our day by the sea ends with a wonderful boat ride on the Sea. Day 7 - May 11: To Jordan (2 nights) Today we leave Galilee, but not before one last stop at Mount Tabor regarded by some as the Mount of Transfiguration. After this transcendent mountaintop experience, Jesus set his face for Jerusalem. We ll follow his path along the Jordan Baptist lived and ministered. We ll go down to the water where we ll renew our own baptismal promises. Then, we ll travel uphill into Jordan, where we ll visit Madaba, home of a famous mosaic map of the whole region in a church filled with mosaics and icons. We ll move then to Mount Nebo, the place where Moses looked into the promised land, taking in the vast valley and Dead Sea. Our day ends with a float in the sea. Day 9 - May 13: To Jerusalem river towards Jericho, stopping at Beit She an, the most extensive archaeological site in Israel, and one of the cities of the Decapolis (10 Roman cities), also remembering some We ll start the day at Masada, one of King Herod s fortresses, and the famous final stand of Israel s rebellion against Rome. Then, we take the Jericho road up to Jerusalem, stopping in the wilderness along the way at the Wadi Kelt overlooking St. George monastery. EMMAUS ANGLICAN CHURCH MAY 5 THROUGH 17, 2019 Day 10 - May 14: Bethlehem Leaving Jerusalem like the Magi, we ll head towards the south into Bethlehem under the Palestinian Authority, to visit Shepherd s Fields church, and the Church of Nativity. Bethlehem was also the home of David. Day 11 - May 15: Jerusalem We ll get up early and walk to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the most likely place of Christ s crucifixion and burial. Restoration of the Edicule, a small building inside of the church, on top of the cave where Jesus Western Wall is complete. We ll then go back to our hotel, rest a bit, and then make our way down the Mount of Olives as Jesus did the tour ending point is not included. We ll end our day on Mount Zion, perhaps where Jesus celebrated the Last Supper. Day 12 - May 16: Jerusalem Today is our last day, and we ll begin at St. Anne s, then begin walking the Via Dolorosa, with a stop at the Ecce Homo Convent. En route the airport, we ll stop at the highly elusive site of Emmaus where Jesus met Cleopas and his friend, explaining the Scriptures to them, and opening their eyes in the breaking of the bread. Early afternoon, travel to Emmaus to remember the centrality of the Eucharist and the calling to the mission. Dinner and travel to the Tel Aviv for our overnight stay before returning home on May 17, 2019.
