PETER WALKED ON WATER WITH JESUS LIFE POINT: People can follow Jesus example and teachings. LEADER BIBLE STUDY PEOPLE LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING People can take deliberate actions to grow in Christlikeness. BIBLE PASSAGE Matthew 14:22-33 UNIT VERSE We know that we have come to know him if we keep his commands. 1 John 2:3 My parents had a painting in their home of a farm scene. The people in it were harvesting wheat by hand. My father liked to say, That s how it used to be. In today s passage, Matthew painted a picture for us. This is a scene not only of the past but also of the present. We, like the disciples, are on a storm-tossed sea and need the presence of the Savior to comfort us in our distress. In this portrait the disciples were struggling and fearful. Jesus assured them of His presence (v. 27), but Peter doubted. Peter s statement is not in harmony with the promise Jesus gave them. Peter wanted to prove that it was Jesus by walking on the water to Him. He stepped out and walked, but then the stormy conditions overwhelmed Peter, and he took his eyes off of Jesus. Then he began to sink. Jesus rescued Peter from the water and asked him a penetrating question (v. 31). Why do we doubt, like Peter, and need proof that His promise is true? We need to discover that faith, in the promise of His presence, is the only way to survive the stormtossed sea of life and successfully walk with Jesus through it. In what ways do we test the truth of God s Word? Have there been times in your life when you doubted His presence? Recall events in your life when Jesus was with you during life s storms. Thank Him once again for His presence. NOTE: Downloadable versions of items identified as CD are available in the Music and Print Extras Bundle. PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS Bible Books Poster (Pack Item 26) 1. Display the prepared boards and the two bowls of spoons. 2. Form two teams. Invite preteens to take turns placing the spoons in Bible book order by sticking the handle of the spoons in the holes of the styrofoam pieces. 3. Allow preteens to use the Bible Books Poster to check their work. 4. Use a timer or stopwatch to keep track of the time it takes to put the spoons in order. If time allows, play a second time to see if preteens can beat their time. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY Don t Look Down 1. Invite a volunteer to be It. Give It the clipboard, and instruct her to stand at one end of the taped area with her back to the playing field. Invite a second volunteer to be the navigator. He should stand at the opposite end of the playing field. 2. Display the six objects with sticky notes. Guide a volunteer to place these objects on the floor in the playing field. 3. Invite It to put the clipboard under her nose and turn around to face the navigator. Tell It that she cannot move the clipboard or her head during the game. 4. Share that the goal is for It to successfully cross the playing area without touching any of the objects. It will look only to the navigator for instructions. 5. Explain that each player who is It will receive 200 points for crossing the finish line minus the point values on the objects he touches. The player with the highest points wins. Appoint a teacher to keep track of the points on the dry erase board. 6. On your signal, explain that the navigator should guide It to the end of the playing field. 7. Explain to remaining preteens that their job is to distract the player by giving incorrect directions. 8. Explain to preteens that in today s session, Peter took a huge risk when he walked across the water to Jesus. Peter followed the example of Jesus and trusted Him. 9. STUDY THE BIBLE GETTING TO THE POINT Jesus Loves Us Title Banner (Pack Item 23) Direct preteens attention to the title banner, and invite a volunteer to read it. Ask: How do you know that Jesus loves you? (Answers will vary, but should include: Jesus gives unconditional love; He died on the cross for my sins; Jesus shows His care by protecting us and providing for us.) Pack Items 23, 24 Teaching Picture 12 DVD CD copy paper Write the following on separate sheets of paper: Capernaum, Sea of Galilee, Gennesaret. Option: Signs (CD) copy paper, pens, candy to be given as a prize masking tape Place a starting point on the floor labeled Capernaum. Measure 12 feet away from the starting line and place another line on the floor labeled Gennesaret. Tape the Sea of Galilee sign on the floor between the two masking tape lines. LOOK IN THE BOOK Teaching Picture 12, Oh, How You Love Us! (CD, track 5) Show the Teaching Picture. Invite preteens to explain what they see taking place in the picture. Invite preteens to find Matthew 14:22-33 in their Bibles. Explain that Jesus and His disciples had just finished feeding the 5,000 and now Jesus moved to the mountainside to be by Himself and pray. Explain that the events in today s session take place in the city of Capernaum, the Sea of Galilee, and the city of Gennesaret. Form teams of at least 8 preteens. Instruct each team to rewrite the story using the 8 pieces of copy paper, writing one sentence on each piece. If you have a small class, this can be completed as one team. Invite volunteers to share their story sheets, in order, based on the way they happen in the story. Be sure the following information is covered: --Jesus was going to pray alone. Point out that even Jesus needed time alone. --Jesus walked out on the water to the disciples; they didn t realize it was Him. --Jesus wanted them to have courage because He was with them. --Peter walked on the water toward Jesus. He was afraid and began to sink. --Jesus saved Peter by reaching out and holding his hand. --Jesus gave the disciples this example of trusting in Him, not circumstances. Instruct each team to shuffle its story sheets so they are no longer in order. Invite teams to line up behind point A in a straight line and hand player 1 on each team a set of story sheets they did not write. Explain the following rules: --The goal is to get your whole team from point A (Capernaum) to point B (Gennesaret) by placing the story sheets on the floor and walking or standing only on the story sheets. --The story sheets must be placed on the ground in the correct order. Players cannot touch the ground with any part of their feet. --Assign a teacher to watch the order of the sheets and correct any sheets that are out of order. 80 Unit 3, SeSSion 3

LIFE POINT People can follow Jesus example and teachings. --Award small candies to the first team to complete the activity. Play Oh, How You Love Us! (CD, track 5) while teams are playing the game. REVIEW CHALLENGE Display one set of Bible story sheets, and invite a volunteer to place them on a focal table in the correct order. Read through the story sheets and ask: --Pretend you were one of Jesus disciples. What part of this story would have been the scariest? (Answers will vary but may include: Jesus telling the disciples to get in the boat; the wind rocking the boat; seeing Jesus walking across the water; stepping out of the boat onto the water.) --What part of the story grabbed your attention? (Answers will vary.) Remind preteens that Jesus gave us an example of courage and faith and we can imitate Him. UNIT VERSE CHALLENGE 1 John 2:3 Unit Verse (Pack Item 24) Invite preteens to form a circle with their chairs. Beginning with the preteen on your left, ask him to substitute the first word of the verse with a noise or action and then recite the rest of the verse. Ask the next preteen to use player 1 s action or noise for word 1 and then make up his own action or noise for word 2. Play until all words have been substituted. Go around the circle one more time using the correct words instead of actions and noises. MISSIONS EMPHASIS Show the video, Life of a Migrant Worker (DVD). After the video, ask: Would it be hard for you to change homes every time your parents moved to a new construction site? Pray that children of migrant workers will understand that God is with them, no matter where their families travel. APPLY THE BIBLE AND PRAY Share a quick story of when you learned to follow the example of Jesus by trusting in Him for provision and help. Show the Peter Walked on Water with Jesus: Life Action video. Invite a volunteer to pray, and dismiss preteens to Live It Out groups. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE PRETEENS 81
