Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ: This Sunday the Sunday of Ordinary Time is replaced by a major feat day. The last few weeks, since the Feast of Pentecost the church has moved from the Easter Season back into Ordinary Time. However the past few Sundays we have celebrated Trinity Sunday and Corpus Christi. Today, we celebrate the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul. These are two of our most important saints: Peter who was the rock on which Christ build the Church and Paul who preach the church to all nations. Peter was the first pope. As we hear in the Gospel he is the rock on whom the church is built. His confession of Christ as the "the Son of the living God" and his commission to lead the early Church confirm his leadership of the early community. Peter made his confirmation of his faith, after the resurrection of Christ and was sent by Christ to "Feed my sheep". Eventually, Peter went to Rome as the first Bishop there and suffered crucifixion in the year 67. Peter, as you may recall, was crucified upside down as he did not feel worthy to die in the same manner of Christ. Paul, originally called Saul, begin to persecute the church and was at the martyrdom of St. Stephen. He set out for the city of Damascus and on the way experienced his great conversion and became the great preacher of the Church. He carried the gospel message to the Gentiles and preached mostly in Cyprus, Greece and Asia Minor. He established many of the early churches in his missionary journeys and was taken as a prisoner to Rome in the year 60. He eventually was released and continued to preach the gospel, possibly to Spain and was beheaded in Rome in 67. Peter and Paul could not be silenced in their witness of faith by repeated imprisonments and many other challenges that they faced. They triumphant over them as a sign of their deep faith and relationship with Jesus. They teach us how to we are to be church by continually pursuing Christ, being faithful to his mission and by trusting in the Christ presence and call no matter what confronts us. We may not be called to preach in the great words and deeds as Peter and Paul were, however, we are called to preach Christ by the following Christ, trusting in His presences and allowing God's will to come alive in all we do. Peace, Fr. Jack Faith Book Reflection on Today s Readings The Solemnity Of Saints Peter and Paul, Apostles Acts 12: 1-11 Psalm 34:2 Timothy 4: 6-8, 17-18 Matthew 16: 13-19 From today's Gospel reading: I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church. Reflection: Today we celebrate Peter and Paul, our great heroes of faith. But remember that is not how they started out. Through these very limited humans God has done a great thing. Once they expressed their faith, God could begin building the church of those who witness in Jesus' name. Like Peter and Paul all of us are required to witness to Christ and some may even have to give their lives in his name. So we ask ourselves: Does my daily life give witness to my faith in Jesus Christ? How comfortable am I speaking about my faith? What holds me back? Society of African Missions This summer we will be welcoming another priest from the SMA Fathers for his summer experience. I have been informed that Fr. Samuel Agbeme will be with beginning in early July to the end of August. I am certain that he will feel welcomed by both parishes and will be warmly welcomed as the past SMA Fathers have been for the past several summers. Fr. Samuel is from Ghana and works in one of the order's formation houses in Lome- Togo. Fr. Samuel has been ordained on 8/1/1998. The SMA Fathers are grateful for the help we have been to them in the past and the many happy memories that the priests share from being in Manchester and Essex. Fr. Jack 4
