2 From your Vicar As a nation, we are preparing for another presidential election and Parishes in this Diocese are on their way to elect the office bearers for the coming year, it is apt to look into the nature and qualities of leadership. Among the different views on leadership, Jesus approach to leadership is noteworthy. Regarding the question on power and position, we can read Jesus reply in Mark. 10: 43f.. Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give life as a ransom for many. The question may arise, can we become slaves to become leaders? Not necessary. But it is a question of view and perception of leadership. Basically, the leadership is obedience to God s call and service for others. The efficiency of leadership can be measured in terms of its contribution in molding the second line of leadership and success of teamwork for the service of the community. May the Holy Spirit guide and strengthen us towards that end, as the Parish is entering into the search of new leadership. Two Sundays of the month of October needs mentioning. 19 th Oct. is the Youth Sunday and 26 th Oct. is the Family Sunday. Youth constitute the most energetic and resourceful section of the community. The crucial responsibility of the parents is the nurturing and guiding of the children. As family is the basic unit of nurturing and inculcating of values, parents have to make sure that children are available and accessible for and to all possible means of instructions. Here comes the role of family prayers, worship services, area prayer meetings and other opportunities of Bible studies and other learning. If we fail to give what we ought to give to our children, they may not get that anywhere else. Ability is what we are capable of doing. Motivation determines what we do Attitude determines how well we do it. May the Holy Spirit give us the ability, motivation and attitude to work towards God s will. With prayerful regards Epiphany Mar Thoma Parsonage Yours in Christ s Service 22 nd Sept. 2008 P.J.Vragheseachen

Chapters 1 & 2 explain the authenticity of the gospel, 3 & 4 explains the superiority of the gospel, and 5 & 6 defines the freedom of the gospel. 1. What is Paul trying to emphasize in chapter 5 verse 1? Paul is trying to tell us that Christ came to set us free from sin and a list of laws and regulations. He came to set us free not to do as we like but to live unselfishly. 2. Based on verses 2 to 4 what is Paul trying to say? What does he mean when he says Christ will be of no value at all? This means that Christ s provision for our salvation will not help us if we are trying to save ourselves. The only thing we can do is accept His gracious gift through faith and our deeds of service must never be used to try earning God s love or favor. 3. Fill in the blank based on chapter 5 verse 6: is the only thing that counts through. Faith; love 4. Fill in the blank based on chapter 5 verse 11: proved that Paul was preaching the true gospel. Persecution 5. What is Paul saying in verse 13? Paul is saying that Christians should not be slaves to sin because they are free to do right and glorify God through loving service to others.

12 6. Based on chapter 5 verse 14, where in the Bible does Christ tell us to Love your neighbor as yourself? Matthew 22:39 7. What is Paul trying to say in verse 15? When Christians lose the motivation of love, we become critical of others and stop looking for good in them and see only their faults. 8. Fill in the blanks based on chapter 5 verses 16-18: Being led by the (two words) involves the desire to hear, the readiness to obey God s, and the sensitivity to discern between your feelings and His prompting. Holy Spirit; Word 9. What two forces are battling each other in verse 17? What is our only way to freedom from our evil desires? Good and evil (the Holy Spirit and the sinful nature in us). Our only way to freedom from our evil desires is from the power of the Holy Spirit. 10. Fill in the blanks based on verses 19-21: We all have (two words), and we can t ignore them. In order for us to follow the (two words) guidance, we must deal with them decisively. evil desires; Holy Spirit s 11. Fill in the blanks based on verses 22 and 23: The (four words) is a spontaneous work of the (two words) in us. fruit of the Spirit; Holy Spirit 12. Based on verses 22 and 23, if we want the fruit of the Spirit to grow in us, we must join our lives to Jesus Christ. Where in the book of John does Jesus say we must remain in Him to bear fruit? John 15 verses 4 and 5. 13. Below is a list of character traits based on Galatians 5:22. Find the antonyms for the words listed. Good - Evil Self-giving Self-centered Productive - Destructive Liberating and nurturing Oppressive and possessive Difficult to ignite Easy to ignite Uplifting - Decadent Easy to stifle Difficult to stifle Holy - Sinful Abundant life Deadly 14. What is Paul saying in verse 23 that Against such things there is no law? This means that a person who exhibits the fruit of the Spirit fulfills the law far better than a person who observes the rituals but has little love in their heart.

13 15. Fill in the blank based on chapter 5 verse 24: Those who belong to Christ Jesus should the (two words). crucify; sinful nature 16. Based on verse 24 and 25, the (two words) is the source of our new life, so we should step in its leading. We shouldn t let anyone or anything else determine our values and standards in any area of our lives. Holy Spirit 17. What is Paul saying in chapter 6 verses 1-3? Christians should think that they are totally independent and don t need the help of others and no body should feel the excuse from the task of helping others.
