TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH JULY 2015 Thoughts for July OK, it s hot. I am tempted to write to you about the dangers of hell, (in keeping with our temperatures); but there is something else more important that is just now taking place. All across our nation, fellow members of our Lutheran Church are meeting in conventions. Al Axelson and I are the delegates from Trinity to the Pacific Southwest District convention in Irvine, California. District conventions are not usually interesting to attend, let alone hear or write about. But what happens at our convention, and those of the other districts, is vitally important. Each convention sets the priorities and directions for the various districts to follow. In addition, each convention helps insure that we are and remain a Synod. What is a Synod, you might be asking. It is a seldom used word that refers to how we organize ourselves. Synod literally means walking together. Our national church body, and even our own district, has no binding authority over local congregations like Trinity. With no ultimate power that can tell congregations what to do and not to do; or, what to teach and preach, you might think that chaos would reign. Quite to the contrary, this system of voluntarily walking together has produced great strength and stability within our churches. We are more united and in greater agreement than any other collection of congregations you might find across this great nation. To be and act like a Synod requires many of the same gifts that are necessary to being a healthy congregation. People must trust one another. They must accept each other. They must be slow to criticize and quick to forgive. They must be willing to work and support ideas and projects that were not their own. They must seek the ultimate good for all rather than their own selfish interests. These are not ordinary or common human traits. They are, instead, precious gifts which the Holy Spirit provides. Without His involvement, Synod cannot and would not happen. So as these District Conventions are taking place, please pray for your church, for your fellow believers, and for the great ministry entrusted to us: the saving of souls.
