Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. Ephesians 4:3 (NIV) June 22-26, 2009 West Virginia Wesleyan College Buckhannon, WV

SUMMER YOUTH CELEBRATION (SYC) is a program of the Conference Council on Youth Ministry of the West Virginia Annual Conference held at West Virginia Wesleyan College. The 2009 Theme is based on Ephesians 4:3 (NIV) Make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace. The theme God s Love: Unity beyond Community will challenge youth to explore the larger global community and to experience God beyond their local communities. MICHAEL WAIDE will be the Dean of Summer Youth Celebration 2009. Michael is an ordained Elder in The United Methodist Church, currently serving as the campus pastor of the Wesley Foundation House at Fairmont State University and Pierpont Community & Technical College. In the fall, Michael will begin his doctoral studies in Child & Family Studies at Syracuse University. WORSHIP PREACHERS: We are excited to offer as our worship leaders, clergy from the WV Annual Conference. We will welcome Bishop Ernest S. Lyght to open our week together. We are also excited to welcome Bishop Violet Fisher to share with us on Wednesday and Thursday. Bishop Fisher s call to ministry came at the age of 16. Though her roots were in the Methodist Episcopal Church, the affirmation for her ministry as an ordained clergy member came through the King s Apostle Holiness Church of God. In this church, she served as National Evangelist, and was the first woman to be ordained. During those years, she taught in the public school systems of Virginia and Maryland. Her journey brought her back to the Church of her birth and in 1988 she was ordained a deacon and in 1990 an elder in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference of The UMC. Bishop Fisher has served St. Daniel s UMC in Chester, PA, and Sayers Memorial UMC in Philadelphia. From 1994 to 2000, she served as district superintendent of the Mary McLeod Bethune District, and twice during her tenure in the district, she was appointed dean of the cabinet. In July 2000 Violet Fisher was consecrated as a Bishop in The United Methodist Church. Our worship leaders for the rest of SYC will be Rev. Ken Ramsey, District Superintendent, Wesleyan District Rev. Debra Dague, Campus Pastor, West Liberty State College Rev. Michael Waide, Campus Pastor, Fairmont State University, Pierpont C&TC, Dean of SYC MUSICIAN: Mike Quimby has been in youth ministry for nearly 15 years. He started as a volunteer youth worker for the Houghton Wesleyan Church and started his full-time career at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury, North Carolina in 1995. In 1998, Mike was called to Bemus Point, NY where he currently serves as the Director of Student and Technical Arts Ministries. Mike has lead worship, taught, and performed musically in several states including Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and Indiana, and also in Canada. Mike has a deep passion for worship leading and he is looking forward to joining us again at SYC. WHO / WHEN / WHERE: SYC is for youth entering the 7th grade through recent 2009 high school graduates. SYC begins with registration on Monday, June 22 from 12:30 pm 2:00 pm, and ends Friday, June 26 at 11:30 am. No lunch will be provided on Friday. No early pick-ups please! You may bring musical instruments, one set of Sunday clothes for Thursday evening communion service, and some electronic equipment. Leave at home TVs, DVDs/VCRs and gaming units, cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, firearms, illegal substances, pornography, crummy dispositions, and anything you care about so greatly that your week will be ruined if it is lost or broken. Please read the SYC Covenant for further information. You and your parent/guardian are required to sign the SYC Covenant as part of the registration process. YOUTH SERVICE FUND (YSF) is the mission fund of the United Methodist Church raised and administered by youth and used for youth. Each year we raise over $2000 for YSF at SYC. That is just a little more than $4.00 per person. Ask yourself what you would have to do to help us double this. Start saving now and bring your gift. REGISTRATION DIRECTIONS and INFORMATION Roommate requests: Any request made after June 8 th may not be honored due to availability. One of the goals of SYC is to have you meet other youth from across the Annual Conference. You and your roommate request must select each other for us to assign you to the same room. Talent Show: You are invited to SHOW US YOUR STUFF at the SYC Talent Show. If you wish to participate, please list your talent. Workshops: Look over the workshop titles and descriptions to make your selections. Select a workshop and two alternate choices for each of the three days. Indicate your first, second and third choice for each day of workshops by placing a 1 for choice 1, 2 for choice 2 and 3 for choice 3. (Three choices should be marked in each of the three day columns.) We will make every effort to honor your first choice, but workshops are assigned on a firstcome, first-served basis. Size limits are carefully adhered to.

The WV Annual Conference Council on Youth Ministries (CCYM) invites you to consider being elected to serve on the CCYM. What makes you eligible to be a member of the CCYM? 1. You must be a Christian youth who desires to be a leader among your peers in our conference. 2. You must be a member or in active preparation toward becoming a member of a local United Methodist Church in the West Virginia Annual Conference. 3. You must be going into the 7th, 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade in August, 2009. What are the responsibilities of a CCYM member? 1. Be an active member of a local church United Methodist Youth Fellowship. 2. Serve on your district council on youth ministries. 3. Attend the regular meetings of the CCYM (Including, if at all possible, the meeting held Friday and Saturday immediately following SYC) 4. Take part and accept leadership roles at Summer Youth Celebration and Fall Workshop. 5. Accept a role on sub-committees of the CCYM when called upon. What positions are open for you to submit a nomination form? At Summer Youth Celebration we will be electing ten grade level at-large members. These positions will be elected by their peers in their own grade level elections. 1. There will be four rising 11th & 12th graders elected. 2. There will be three rising 9th & 10th graders elected. 3. There will be three rising 7th & 8th graders elected. What do you do in order to apply for the elections? 1. Fill out the Things You Need To Know portion of this brochure. 2. Return it to along with your workshop registration form. 3. There will be no nominations from the floor this year!!!! Everyone who is interested in serving on CCYM must turn in the CCYM Self-Nomination and Biological Information Form along your SYC registration. This includes current CCYM members. The election committee and the CCYM have worked hard to make this election process fair. This is one ruling we have decided upon and we will adhere to. Sending this form in tells us you are dependable and truly interested in serving on the CCYM. What will the procedure be for the elections? 1. There will be two grade-level election sessions at SYC. 2. At the first session you will be introduced to your peers and the answers you have written to the questions in this brochure will be read. 3. At the second session you will be re-introduced to your peers and given a minimum of two minutes to expand your answers orally. 4. At the second session, the election will take place by secret ballot. 5. Soon after the second session, the results of the election will be announced. What if you have recently been elected as a District Representative? District Representatives should have been elected sometime in the past two months for the 2009-2010 school year. If you were elected as a District Representative to the CCYM for the 2009-2010 school year, you do not need to run for election at SYC, you are already a new member!!! What if you are new to SYC and want to be a youth leader by serving on the CCYM? Then you are encouraged to fill out this form and run for election. The eligibility requirements are listed. Feel free to join in the excitement of the elections. We encourage newcomers who have gifts for leadership to take part in this election. Some newcomers have done so, and have been elected. If you would like to be considered for a position on CCYM, fill out the CCYM Self-Nomination and Biographical Information Form and return it with your registration.
