ORDER OF WORSHIP November 1, 2015 All Saints Day 23 rd Sunday after Pentecost 31 st Sunday in Ordinary Time / Proper 26 *Congregation Stands (If you prefer, It is acceptable to remain seated.) Welcome to Knox Presbyterian Church! Please sign and pass the Friendship Book ( pew pad ) if you have not already done so. Our prayer is that you will experience the presence of the eternal, as we worship our God together. We invite you to take the time during the prelude to focus your heart and mind in worship. WELCOME & ANNOUNCEMENTS Patrick Striker PRELUDE "Hymn to Peace" Organ Gilbert M. Martin CALL TO WORSHIP: Psalm 100 Patrick Striker Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. Enter His gates with thanksgiving and His courts with praise. Give thanks to Him, bless His name. For the Lord is good; His steadfast love endures forever, And His faithfulness to all generations. CHORAL INTROIT Women s Ensemble All Things Bright and Beautiful John Rutter PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Pastor Meekhof *SONG OF WORSHIP: FOR THE BEAUTY OF THE EARTH (Hymn #353) (VERSE 1)

For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies, for the love which from our birth over and around us lies, (VERSE 2) For the beauty of each hour of the day and of the night, hill and vale, and tree, and flower, sun and moon and stars of light, (VERSE 3) For the joy of ear and eye, for the heart and mind s delight, for the mystic harmony linking sense to sound and sight, (VERSE 4) For the joy of human love, brother, sister, parent, child, friends on earth and friends above, for all gentle thoughts and mild, (VERSE 5) For the Church that evermore lifteth holy hands above, offering up on every shore her pure sacrifice of love, (VERSE 6) For thyself, best gift divine, to the world so freely given; for that great, great love of thine, peace on earth and joy in heaven, Chenayla Welch Call to Confession God has promised to make of us a new creation, laying to rest the former things, making all things new. Trusting in God s grace, let us confess our sin. TIME OF PRAYER Prayer of Confession O God, you have been faithful, yet we have not loved you with our whole hearts.

You showed us how to love our fellow human beings, yet we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. Turn us back to you, O God, that we may follow your commandments; through Christ our Lord. Amen. Therefore, we are reconciled to God and to one another, that we might walk in peace and love. Praise him above ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Amen. Prayer of Dedication Chenayla Welch God of goodness, you bind up the wounds of the afflicted. We come with thanksgiving for your boundless acts of mercy. Receive now our offerings. Use them to heal the suffering, to shelter the homeless, to comfort the lonely, to make whole once again those whose lives are broken. We give what we have in the name of Christ, who gave to all who believe the gift of hope. Amen. - from When We Gather: A Book of Prayers for Worship, by James G. Kirk @2001 At this time the children are excused to attend Junior Chapel. Please be seated during the playing of the Offertory. The ushers will pass the offering plates. Offertory "Supplication" Organ Van Denman Thompson PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE READING OF THE SCRIPTURES Pat Tucker Luke 17:11 19 (NIV) 11 Now on his way to Jerusalem, Jesus traveled along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 As he was going into a village, ten men who had leprosy met him. They stood at a distance 13 and called out in a loud voice, Jesus, Master, have pity on us! 14 When he saw them, he said, Go, show yourselves to the priests. And as they went, they were cleansed. 15 One of them, when he saw he was healed, came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself at Jesus feet and thanked him and he was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus asked, Were not all ten cleansed? Where are the other nine? 18 Has no one returned to give praise to God except this foreigner? 19 Then he said to him, Rise and go; your faith has made you well. 1 Thessalonians 5:12 23 (NIV)

12 Now we ask you, brothers and sisters, to acknowledge those who work hard among you, who care for you in the Lord and who admonish you. 13 Hold them in the highest regard in love because of their work. Live in peace with each other. 14 And we urge you, brothers and sisters, warn those who are idle and disruptive, encourage the disheartened, help the weak, be patient with everyone. 15 Make sure that nobody pays back wrong for wrong, but always strive to do what is good for each other and for everyone else. 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 Do not quench the Spirit. 20 Do not treat prophecies with contempt 21 but test them all; hold on to what is good, 22 reject every kind of evil. 23 May God himself, the God of peace, sanctify you through and through. May your whole spirit, soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. MESSAGE Radical Gratitude Sermon Text: Instead, be filled with the Spirit, speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit. Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Ephesians 5:18-20 (NIV) *SONG OF WORSHIP: I WILL PRAISE HIM STILL (VERSE 1) When the morning falls on the farthest hill I will sing His name I will praise Him still

(VERSE 2) When dark trials come and my heart is filled With the weight of doubt I will praise Him still (CHORUS 1) For the Lord our God He is strong to save From the arms of death from the deepest grave (VERSE 3) And He gave us life in His perfect will And by His good grace I will praise Him still CCLI Song # 2287995 Fernando Ortega 1997 Dayspring Music, LLC (a div. of Word Music Group, Inc.), MargeeDays Music (Admin. by Word Music Group, Inc.) It always points beyond itself to celebrate God s grace and covenant faithfulness. This does not mean the physical aspects of the celebration are incidental or unimportant. The Lord s Supper should be a celebration fitting to the abundant grace of God offered in Christ. Invitation to the Lord s Supper Breaking of the Bread & Pouring of the Cup Sharing the Body and Blood of Christ *CLOSING SONG It is the custom at Knox, in celebration of Holy Communion, to hold hands and form a circle around the sanctuary to sing our closing song BLEST BE THE TIE THAT BINDS (Hymn #708) Blest be the tie that binds our hearts in Christian love; the fellowship of kindred minds is like to that above. In the pulpit today: Don Meekhof is our Temporary Stated Supply pastor. Those words in quotes are the official title given by Presbytery because with Shared Ministry there is no full-time pastor. However, Don most definitely has a fulltime love for shepherding the flock of Christ and we are blessed to have him with us!
