UNIT 15 Session 3 Leader DEVOTIONAL Leaders: this is just for you! Read ahead of time to engage with the Bible story on an adult level and prepare your heart to teach on Sunday. Warnings had come from the prophets for decades. God patiently waited for His people to turn from their sin. The prophet Jeremiah spared few details when he warned Judah what would happen if they did not turn from their evil ways. (See Jer. 25:1-14.) But the people of Judah did not change their ways. The kingdom had been declining for years, despite King Josiah s efforts to prompt nationwide repentance. When King Josiah died, the people went back to their old ways, worshiping idols and disobeying the Lord. The time of judgment had come. God used Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon to deport the people from Judah to Babylon where they would live in exile for 70 years. Nebuchadnezzar went to Judah when Jehoiakim was king. He put Jehoiakim in chains and took him to Babylon. Jehoiachin became king, and Nebuchadnezzar came back for him too. Many of the people in Judah were taken, along with treasures from the Lord s temple. Nebuchadnezzar put Zedekiah on the throne in Jerusalem. The people of Judah were unfaithful to God. Zedekiah rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar, and God poured out His wrath on Judah. Nebuchadnezzar showed no mercy to the people of Jerusalem. The Babylonians set fire to the Lord s temple and the king s palace. They destroyed the wall around Jerusalem. Nebuchadnezzar s armies carried most of the people away to Babylon as prisoners; only poor farmers were allowed to stay and work the land. The people were held captive in Babylon, serving the king for 70 years. God did not abandon His people. The prophet Jeremiah told what would happen next: The days are certainly coming when I will restore the fortunes of My people Israel and Judah (Jer. 30:3). God was going to save His people from captivity and raise up a new King a forever King from the line of David. (Jer. 30:9)

The BIBLE STORY Judah Was Taken into Captivity 2 Chronicles 36:1-21 Josiah, the king of Judah, had three sons: Jehoahaz (jih HOH uh haz), Jehoiakim (jih HOY uh kim), and Zedekiah (ZED uh KIGH uh). Josiah had a grandson too. His name was Jehoiachin (jih HOY uh kin). Each of them had a turn at being king. None of them was good like King Josiah. After Josiah died, Jehoahaz became king. Jehoahaz was not king for very long. He did bad things that God did not like. One day, the king of Egypt came to Judah. He took Jehoahaz away and made him a prisoner. Now that Jehoahaz was a prisoner in Egypt, he could not be the king of Judah anymore. So his brother, Jehoiakim, became king. Just like his brother, Jehoiakim did what was wrong. One day, the king of Babylon came to Judah. He took Jehoiakim away and made him a prisoner. Now that Jehoiakim was a prisoner in Babylon, he could not be the king of Judah anymore. So Jehoiakim s son Jehoiachin became king. Just like his father, Jehoiachin did what was wrong. One day, the king of Babylon sent some of his servants to Judah. They took Jehoiachin to Babylon. Now that Jehoiachin was in Babylon, he could not be the king of Judah anymore. The king of Babylon made Jehoiachin s uncle king. His name was Zedekiah. Just like his brothers, Zedekiah did what was wrong. He led God s people to do wrong things too. Jeremiah the prophet warned Zedekiah that God would punish him for doing wrong things, but Zedekiah did not listen. God was not happy with the people of Judah. They did not obey God. God loved His people. He did not want to destroy them, so He sent prophets to talk to the people. The prophets said, Stop sinning! Turn back to God! But the people did not listen. It was time for God to punish the people of Judah for their sin. God allowed the king of Babylon and his armies to attack the people in Judah, and many of the people died. The king of Babylon took everything out of the Lord s temple. Then the king and his army burned the temple. They tore down the wall that stood around the city of Jerusalem. The army destroyed anything that was left. The king of Babylon took the rest of the people to Babylon, and he made them work for him and his family. All of this happened just as God said it would. Christ Connection: God was right to punish His people because they sinned. But God still loved them, and He was going to give His people a good king, just like He said He would. Many years later, God sent His Son, Jesus, to be our King forever. Jesus took the punishment we should get for our sin.

Small Group OPENING Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to help new kids connect to your group. As kids arrive, ask them about a time they went on a long trip or moved to a new city. Discuss the things they missed about the place they left. Say Moving can be very difficult. Sometimes new places are scary, and it can be hard to adjust to a different place. Our Bible story today is about a group of people whom God forced to move away from their home. We ll learn why in our Bible story! Activity page Obey the Law activity page, 1 per kid pencils or markers Invite kids to complete the Obey the Law activity page. Ask them to circle the pictures that show someone obeying a law or rule. They will mark an X over those showing a person disobeying a law or rule. Say Today we will learn about what happened to Judah, the Southern Kingdom of God s people, when they disobeyed God year after year. Key passage activity\ Key Passage Poster white board and markers Review the motions your kids created for the Key Passage last week. Write the Key Passage up on the white board and go through it together as a class with the motions. Then, erase a couple of words and go through it again, challenging kids to fill in the missing words from memory. Erase a few more words and repeat. See if you can erase all of the words and have the kids say the whole things from memory. Say God s people did not obey Him. Their disobedience showed that they did not love Him. Our key passage tells us they had hearts of stone. That doesn t mean they actually had rocks inside their chests, but it helps us understand that their feelings for God were cold, hard, and lifeless. God promised to give them new hearts and to fill them with the Holy Spirit! That s exactly what God does when anyone trusts in Jesus. Session starter Option 1: Draw and discuss families paper (use scrap paper) crayons or markers Tip: Be sensitive to difficult family situations. Invite kinders to draw a picture of their family. As kinders work, ask them how they are like other members of their families and how they are different. Sample questions: Do you look like anyone else in your family? What things do you like to do that other people in your family like to do? What things do you like to do that the other people in your family do not? Do you like the same foods as

anyone else in your family? What foods do you like that your other family members do not? What is a movie you like? Does the rest of your family like it too? Say Sometimes people are like the other people in their family. Sometimes they are different. In today s Bible story, King Josiah s sons and grandson were not like him. King Josiah was a good king, but his sons and grandson were bad kings. They did not lead God s people to obey God. Let s find out what happened. Option 2: Walk a sad parade Form a single-file line. The first child in line leads the group slowly around the room, making sad faces and sounds. The others must mimic the action of line leader. After a minute, instruct that kinder to move to the back of the line and the next kinder in line becomes the leader. Continue until all kinders have had a chance to be the leader. Say Parades are usually happy, but our parade was sad. In today s Bible story, God s people were sad. God sent them away from the very special land He had given them. Listen for why God sent His people away from their land. Transition to Bible study To gain the attention of all the kinders to move them to Bible study, flip off the lights or clap a simple rhythm for the children to copy. Invite kinders to hold hands to form a human chain and move to Bible study together.

Small Group ACTIVITIES Bible story review & Bible skills crowns, 3 name tags Tip: Make a name tag for each role. Place the name tags on kinders as you assign roles. Assign the roles of Josiah, Jehoahaz, king of Egypt, Jehoiakim, king of Babylon, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah. Place a crown on the king of Egypt and the king of Babylon to start. The rest of the group are the people of Judah. Review the Bible story while playing out the following actions: Crown King Josiah. The people of Judah cheer for the good king. King Josiah gives his crown to Jehoahaz. The king of Egypt leads King Jehoahaz away. King Jehoahaz gives his crown to Jehoiakim. The king of Babylon leads King Jehoiakim away. King Jehoiakim gives his crown to Jehoiachin. The king of Babylon leads King Jehoiachin away. King Jehoiachin gives his crown to Zedekiah. The king of Babylon leads King Zedekiah and all the people of Judah away. The people of Judah cry. Reassign roles and play again. Say Because of His great love, God sent prophets to warn the people of Judah to obey. The people refused to listen, and one king after another made sinful choices that led the people away from God. Eventually, God sent Babylon to attack them. But God never stopped loving them! God preserved some of the people, who became captives. Years later, God would send Jesus to die on the cross for our sins so that everyone who trusts in Him will be saved! Engage Option 1: Play a sending game Take your class to the gym, large group room, or outside for this activity if you like. Gather kinders at one end of the room. Choose a kinder to be a prophet at the opposite end of the room. Whisper an action to the prophet. Possible actions include sit down, do a jumping jack, turn around, hop like a frog, and so forth. The prophet must then go tell the group the action, and the group must complete the action. Choose another prophet and play again. Say God sent prophets to tell His people, Stop sinning! Turn back to God! But the people did not listen. God sent Judah away from their land. God is right to punish sin. God loves His people. One day, God would send His Son, Jesus, to take the punishment His people should get for their sin.

Option 2: Make paper chains construction paper strips tape Bible Story Picture Poster Show kinders how to make a loop with the strips of construction paper by taping the ends together. Demonstrate how to create a paper chain by threading another strip through the loop and taping the ends of the strip together. Assist kinders in making their own paper chains. Say A paper chain cannot hold someone captive, but a metal chain can. The king in our Bible story picture is wearing chains as he is taken to Babylon. God sent Judah away from their land. But God loved His people, and He was going to give them a good king. Many years later, God sent His Son, Jesus, to be our King forever. Jesus took the punishment we should get for our sin. Prayer Time Class prayer request notebook Invite kids to think about a time that they made a bad choice and had to deal with the consequences. Remind kids that God sent Judah into captivity because of their sin to teach them how important it is to love God. Say Without Jesus, our hearts are too broken to love God. God showed His love by sending Jesus to take the punishment for our sin so that we can live with Him. When we trust in Jesus, the Holy Spirit dwells within us and gives us the power to love and obey God. Take prayer requests. Pray, praising God for His righteousness and justice in punishing sin. Thank Him for His grace and mercy in sending Jesus to die for sins so we could be forgiven. Ask Him to help your kids love Him more and live for Him. Closing and Pick-Up Bible Story Coloring Page, 1 per kid crayons or markers Big Picture Cards After prayer time is done, continue any unfinished activities and/or let kids color this week s Bible Story Coloring Page until parents arrive. Send each kid home with this week's Big Picture Card so kids and their parents can interact with the biblical content at home.
