As you know, in the months leading up to Scott Robertson s retirement, a search committee was formed, chaired by Dr. Guy Patterson and charged with finding our next Director of Music Ministries. Every leadership position on a church staff is significant in different ways, but there are particular gifts and graces required of someone to lead a music program as strong as the one here at Trinity. We felt strongly that the best candidate would share in our desire to build Trinity s music ministry, all the while keeping the variety and warmth of our current program. After an extensive national search, I am thrilled to introduce you to our new Director of Music Ministries, Russell Nelson. Russell comes to us from Central United Methodist Church in Asheville, North Carolina, where he has led the music program for the last 11 years. During his time in Asheville, Russell oversaw remarkable growth in his sanctuary, children s, and youth choirs, while also incorporating brass and other instrumental ensembles into worship. He also took part in planning worship, leading liturgy, as well as international mission experiences in the Dominican Republic and Sri Lanka. Prior to his post at Central UMC, Russell led the choirs of Faith Presbyterian Church in Tallahassee, Florida. Russell holds a Masters of Music in Choral Conducting from Princeton s Westminster Choir College, as well as a Bachelors of Arts in Music from Anderson College in South Carolina. He is a native of Anderson, South Carolina, and is a published contributor for GIA Press. Russell s resume is impressive, but we were even more struck by his gracious and calm demeanor. From the beginning, our prayer was to find a music minister someone who could not only ably lead the music program with technical skill, but who also possessed the pastoral presence to nurture our musicians and congregation in their faith. After speaking with two consultants, culling through resumes, video-interviewing several candidates, and bringing two finalists to Trinity, we believe that we have found exactly what we were looking for in Russell. Russell will begin his ministry here at Trinity on July 11, and I would ask for your prayers. Let us pray for Russell, as he makes the transition from a church that he loves and has loved him for over a decade. Please also be in prayer for our choirs and musicians, as they welcome him into this new role. Finally, I would be remiss if I miss any opportunity to thank Jodi Haskins, who has not simply filled in over the better part of a year, she has led our program with grace, skill, and steadfastness. Jodi is an absolute treasure, and I am excited to see how she and Russell will work together to continue proclaiming the good news through the gift of song.
