Timing. The familiar observation that timing is everything surely overstates the point, but timing is vital. We read in Ecclesiastes:

WE IN PRAYER PRAISE NEWS & THE BIBLE WELCOME TO ST ANDREW S ROSEVILLE 26TH OCTOBER 2014 ST ANDREW S IN NEWS

All that s going on FROM THE ASSOCIATE MINISTER REV MATT STEDMAN Associate Minister It's wonderful to be back after two weeks in Zimbabwe training pastors in Christian doctrine. This is no light-weight course Topics up for discussion included God's transcendence and immanence, the Spirit's dual procession, the inerrancy and infallibility of scripture, and Jesus' homoousion nature; and the pastors couldn t get enough of it What might surprise some of you is that for most of the pastors, the training we provide, is their theological training for ministry, which is why I take these trips so seriously. I should also add that through your generous financial support, $12,000 was able to be allocated from the St Andrew s Mission & Aid budget to African Enterprise. This covered the students board and tuition for the course. Trust me, the money you give is making a difference to the church in Zimbabwe. I always try to expect the unexpected when I'm in Africa. This helped me to be prepared for the request I received while being picked up on the first Sunday for church, "Matt, this morning you will preach to us on foot washing. After coming up with a few thoughts and delivering the sermon, I was then asked to help wash the feet of every man, woman and child in the church - immediate application There were about 600 people there that morning and church went for six and a half hours. What makes such trips so special is that these pastors are almost exclusively from backgrounds where there has been a lack of biblically-based theological training. For me, coming from a reformed evangelical tradition, I certainly treat such opportunities as a rare privilege. Of course, I m always tempted to try and change the whole African church in two weeks, but such theological change takes generations, not days.

All that s going on FROM THE ASSOCIATE MINISTER I know we hear this a lot, but we really do have an abundance of spiritual resources in Australia. I was reminded about this again when arguments broke out in class about how many times one needed to be submerged under the water during baptism to be saved. Some said once, some three times, and others, seven. A mere sprinkling of water on the head was not even considered worthy of mention There were also heated conversations about the importance of giving exactly 10% of our income, the evils of drinking alcohol, the role of the spirit etc. Jesus words came back to me, "to those who have been given much, much is expected." My overall impression of Zimbabwe was that it s in a bad state. Due to economic sanctions by many western countries, Zimbabwe has looked to China for economic investment. I believe Russia is also interested in partnership. How successful these partnerships will be remains to be seen, however many people I spoke to were highly skeptical that the common Zimbabwean would benefit in the long run. Some journalists have perhaps unfairly named China s interest in Africa as the second colonisation. With practically no public healthcare or social welfare, modern Zimbabwean life more closely resembles first century Israel than it does 21st century Australia. There is no option for Zimbabwean Christians but to live by faith. Having returned, I am more convinced than ever that taking your family to a country like Zimbabwe for one of your family holidays will be of great value. It will broaden your families horizons as to how other people live, it will increase your thankfulness for what you have, and it will cause you to pray along with your poorer brothers and sisters, 'give us today our daily bread'. God bless, Matt PRAYER FOR THE WEEK Lord God, without you we are not able to please you; mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

All that s going on COMMUNITY WATCH PROPERTY VISION FUNDRAISER BUSH DANCE I think it was one of the best "all in together" activities we have ever had at St Andrew s. It was great fun We all had a ball. Will it be a yearly event? These are just two of the many enthusiastic responses received by those who were able to attend last Saturday evening s Bush Dance. The evening was a fantastic communitybuilder which saw all congregations and all age groups having fun and dancing together. There were literally newborns right through to 89 year olds involved (thanks Neville). The evening also raised over $1,200 towards the Property Re-development. Of course there are many people to thank for their efforts including all those who helped in areas such as setting up, selling tickets, catering, pack-up and playing instruments in the band. A particular thank you to our very own and lovely Bec Kimpton, who organised much of the event, as well as her sister Mel who called the Bush Dance so skilfully. Many have asked whether we will be holding future Bush Dances. Based on the success of this one, there can only be one answer - stay tuned Santino Dimarco Executive Pastor

Words you ll need for today s contemporary services CONTEMPORARY SERVICE PRAYERS CONFESSION Merciful God, our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your Name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory, are yours now and for ever. Amen.

Give thanks for the start of the Mission and Vision Series aiming to, by God s grace, maximise the growth of God s kingdom in the area and beyond. Pray the church s plans for 2015; that God s kingdom will continue to grow for His glory alone. Pray for everyone at church to be growing in faith, hope and love. Pray for Scripture teaching in the local High Schools to keep bearing fruit for the Lord. Pray for more contact with the parents of Scripture class kids through various activities at the schools and being visible in the community. Pray also for the students who have come to faith through Scripture classes, particularly T, that with his budding faith he will also be a witness to his non-christian parents and siblings. Give thanks for the start of a SUPA Club in Kearns Public School. This is a lunchtime Christian group for Year 5 and 6 students. Pray for growth in numbers and that the kids will be challenged to consider Jesus claims in the gospel. Pray for the preparation for Kids Club on 22 and 23 December; for leaders and helpers and that many kids will come. Pray that more women in the neighbourhood will come to the Little Lambs Playgroup more regularly, and for helpers who can follow up and build relationships through home visits. Pray that the parents and children of Elevate (Kids Church and Creche) will keep growing in the love of God and knowledge of his grace and mercy, and that they can be a light in their neighbourhood and networks.
