Sand Springs United Methodist Church The Springs Rev. Dennis Adlof January 20, 2011 From Dennis the Minis-ter: You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, so that you may be children of your Father in heaven Jesus in Matthew 5:43-45a One redeeming development to arise out of the tragedy in Tucson is the call by certain members of Congress to set aside a long standing tradition. That is, at the coming State of the Union address some Democrats and Republicans will sit side by side, rather than sitting only with their fellow political party members. I applaud such a gesture. Even though we cannot say the hateful tone of American politics is the cause for the massacre in Arizona; yet any effort to come together to treat each other as fellow Americans and human beings worthy of the respect and worth that God created us with is a step in the right direction. It is an action greatly needed in our life together. I am reminded of a story. At an official reception during the Civil War, President Lincoln made a brief speech in which he referred to the Confederates as erring human beings rather than enemies to be destroyed. An elderly lady abolitionist [radically against slavery] said, Mr. President, how can you lower yourself to refer to such slave holding rebels as merely erring human beings who were sworn enemies to the Union and freedom? Why, madam, replied Lincoln, do I not destroy my enemies when I make them friends? Where is the Lord calling you to step beyond antagonism? Is there an adversary that the love of Jesus is calling you redeem as a friend? Remember the rest of Jesus words in the Matthew passage: for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous. For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? And if you greet only your brothers and sisters, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect. Matthew 5:45b-48

From the KidZone We have started our books on Heroes of the Bible. Last week we learned about Abraham and Sarah and God's promises to them. This week we learned about their son Isaac. You won't want to miss next week when we will learn the story of Jacob and make a 3- D ladder with angels. The following week we will learn about Joseph and will be making a coat unlike any you have ever seen. Reminder: you can earn Bible bucks by remembering to bring your Bibles, bringing a friend to Sunday School, or reciting Psalm 119:105 "Your word is a lamp to my feet. And a light to my path." New Member Welcoming Dinner It's a Family Dinner to welcome our newest family members. Let's beat the cold, and warm our hearts by being together. Crumbs From The Cracker News: Mission is on the map!!!! Birmingham, AL here our youth come!!! This year we have teamed up with Trinity Baptist to take our youth on a Youthworks mission trip!!! This is going to be an awesome experience for our kids to put their faith into action and serve God in another part of the country! There will be 2 info meetings for parents and youth this week. They are the same meetings just on 2 different nights in case parents can t make one. If you have a youth who want to go on a mission, please attend one of these 2 meetings. It is important that you have the info. We only have 16 youth spots to fill at this point, so sign up quick!!! The trip is $300, and your youth s deposit is due on January 31 st. That deposit guarantees a spot for your youth. The deposit is $60 dollars. The youth will be doing fundraisers as well, to raise support for the mission! So get excited and feel free to email me with any questions!!! Thanks! Remember that I will be out of the office for my wedding and honeymoon from January 20 th - January 29 th, so if you need to get info on mission stuff feel free to contact Matt Richie richie.matthew@gmail.com My Email: gcollett@sandspringsumc.org Weekly Youth Lessons: The youth have kicked off both of their new series of lessons. The Sunday school class has learned two stories from the Scary, Gross and Weird Stories of the Bible. Those stories were about Lot and his wife, and the Plagues of Egypt. These have been fun to go through on Sunday and this coming Sunday Gina Osburn will be teaching the youth about a Talking Donkey J not the one from Shrek. The Slave series has also begun with last weeks lesson on Slaves to Anger. We learned that when we are angry, we either Spew or we Stew on our anger. This coming weeks lesson is going to be about Slave to Lust, which is going to be an awesome lesson to challenge our youth to remain pure in mind, body, and Spirit.

Weekly Verse: Matthew 10: 10b Don t hesitate to accept hospitality, because those who work deserve to be fed. So over the past week, Jesus has been really speaking to me about blessings and learning how to receive them with a humble heart and not deny them with a prideful spirit. The verse that is our key verse for the week is what kicked it off. How many of us pray that God would bless us? How many of us believe that God can? How many of us expect an un-marked paper bag with a wad of $100 bills? I say this because I have caught myself so many times in the past denying a blessing, not because I don t want a blessing, but because I am too prideful to receive one. Jesus has been really humbling my spirit over the course of the year regarding this idea of humbling myself and receiving, knowing that it is a blessing from God coming through one of His people. It seems contradictory that I ask God to bless me and when He uses one of His people to do it, we turn Him down, because we don t want to receive the gift in humbleness and humility which goes against His word. In this section Jesus tells His disciples to go and heal, cast out demons, etc. and He also says don t take anything with you. Now there is a story in the Old Testament in Genesis about a guy name Jacob and Esau, and Jacob was told by God to give Esau some livestock. Well Esau does not want to receive it at first. Could this have been pride too? Its easy to ask God to bless us, but its hard to be humble and receive it from a source that may not be where you thought it would come from. Not all of us can win the lottery, but we can receive from others if God puts it on their heart. So my challenge this week is when someone wants to bless you don t even hesitate to receive it, and most of all don t deny it, because you might be missing out on a blessing from Mr. Jesus. We will be having the reception on February 5 th at 2pm. Please come and join us on that date to celebrate this new journey that we will share together! Hope to see ya February 5 th at 2pm. We are registered at Bed Bath and Beyond and Target. Sand Springs United Methodist, Thank you so much for allowing us to glorify God with you in all his miracles. Paul often commends his churches for their faith and righteousness and I would like to do the same. Your hospitality was noticed from the minute we walked in the door there was no shortage of friendly faces and warm good mornings. AS we talked among the people the fruits of the spirit were easy to see. Your generosity gave by faith and for that we are thankful. You may be a small church but you have large hearts and I know that whatever you place your hands to will prosper. Continue in your love to those inside and outside the church and when love is difficult it is all the more beautiful. Thanks for being world changers. Love, Chase & Marissa Henninger
