This is my first official bulletin article, other than my introductory remarks from the beginning of the month. One of the great temptations a preacher faces is turning the homily into something it is not. Pope Francis says, A homily is a distinctive genre, since it is preaching situated within the framework of the liturgical celebration; hence it should be brief and avoid taking on the semblance of a speech or lecture. A homily is an integral part of the Sunday Mass, so it should be something that illuminates the Scripture passages that we read. It should not become a classroom lecture or instructional time. However, we know that we have so many beautiful teachings about dogma and the spiritual life that the Church has revealed in the last 2,000 years. My hope is that I can use my sporadic bulletin articles as a way of sharing some of these beautiful truths of our Catholic faith. By doing this, we can continue to learn so much about Jesus Christ and His Church. Saint Thomas Aquinas, one of my favorite saints, wrote his most famous work, the Summa Theologica, in a question and answer format. Questions would be posed to him, and he would respond to the questions from his students. If you ever have any questions about the Catholic faith that you would like me to address in a bulletin article, please do not be afraid to e-mail me that question, and I will, hopefully, slowly work through those questions that I think the entire parish would like to learn about. I love to learn about our Catholic faith, and I look forward to writing about it. I always sign off with a phrase Saint Francis of Assisi would use when writing a letter, which translates into English as peace and goodness. Pax et bonum, - Fr. T.J. AED Defibrillator Training Do you know how to respond if someone you know suffers a sudden cardiac arrest? Would others around you know how to respond if it happened to you? Now you can learn by attending one of the training sessions offered free of charge by Maplewood Fire Department. Each session will last approximately 15 minutes. You will learn how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED). As you may remember, Presentation now has four of these AEDs on our campus, thanks to a grant from Lake Elmo Jaycees and the generosity of the Picha/Hughes family and the Presentation Men s Club! You will also learn Hands-Only CPR. An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a portable device that checks the heart rhythm and can send an electronic shock to the heart to try to restore a normal rhythm. AEDs are used to treat sudden cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart suddenly and unexpectedly stops beating. Hands-Only CPR is CPR without mouth-to-mouth breaths. It is recommended for use by people who see a teen or adult suddenly collapse in an out-of-hospital setting (such as at home, at work, in the park), consisting of two easy steps: (1) call 9-1-1 (or send someone to do so), and (2) push hard and fast in the center of the chest. Saturday, August 5 th, in the School Gym Pick one of the following 3 sessions offered: 9:00 am 9:30 am 10:00 am Contact Karen Simons by August 1 st with your desired time by email (ksimons@presentationofmary.org) or phone message (651-842-6020).

FFF: Family-centered Faith Formation Hello, all! It is with so much joy and excitement that I write this! I am eagerly looking forward to the Fall when Family Faith Formation will begin again. I thank you in advance for your prayers and your support as we develop our new programs together! I am seeking assistance with teaching the Middle School group (Grades 7-8). Please prayerfully consider helping with this beautiful ministry! Contact me at jnelson@presentationofmary.org if you are interested! Good things are in store for us. May the God of Mercy and Love guard our hearts, free our minds, and guide our steps! Permanent Adorers Urgently Needed There are currently no adorers for the following hours and are in immediate need: Wednesday Friday The Two Feet of Social Concerns 4 pm 5 pm, 6 pm - Jessica Nelson Justice: The test of our progress is not whether we add more to the abundance of those who have much; it is whether we provide enough for those who have too little. - Franklin Delano Roosevelt Charity: Over 220 turkey dinners were prepared and served on July 5 th by members of Presentation at Dorothy Day Loaves and Fishes. The people we served loved it! If you really want to grow in love, come back to the Eucharist, come back to that Adoration. Our hours of adoration will be special hours of reparation for sins, and intercession for the needs of the whole world, exposing the sin-sick and suffering humanity to the healing, sustaining and transforming rays of Jesus, radiating from the Eucharist. Each one of us is a coworker of Christ - we must labor hard to carry Him to the hearts where He has not yet been known and loved...but, unless we have Jesus, we cannot give Him; that is why we need the Eucharist. Spend as much time as possible in front of the Blessed Sacrament and He will fill you with His strength and His power. St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta Contact Barb Kleiter at 651-774-1172 or timkandbarbk@comcast.net. Become a Knight of Columbus Are you a Catholic man committed to God, His church, your family, your country, your community, and your parish? If so, then you could be a Knight of Columbus. Please contact Bob Altman at rcaltman@netzero.net or 651-776-1476. H.E.O. Update Thank you for your donations to area food shelves. 32 pounds went to Merrick Comm. Serv., Mplwd., on July 10. July 17 Jim Stavsvick, Salvation Army, Mplwd. Thank you for your generosity! May God bless you! Stewardship May our stewardship of time, talent, and treasure show us to be among those who have heard the message of Christ and taken it in, yielding a hundred or sixty or thirty-fold! Concrete/Roof Repair Drive In the next few weeks, you will notice work being done to replace the rectory roof and the concrete sidewalks around the campus. Deferring these repairs is no longer an option, and while the RENEW fund will cover half of the expense, we do not want to incur additional debt to cover the remainder. Please consider extra RENEW donations during the next two months, to cover the $50,000 shortfall that will be temporarily covered by Parish funds. Your generosity is appreciated! Lighthouse Catholic Media Kiosk Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary has a new kiosk in the Kennard Street entrance filled with exciting Lighthouse Catholic Media. The CDs, pamphlets, and books are prepared by Catholic priests and eminent Catholic laity that are guaranteed to deepen your faith, answer your questions, and have you coming back for more! Why not listen to a Catholic CD while driving in the car? Items are available for a donation of only $3 per CD, $0.50 per pamphlet, $5 per book. We will add new CDs, brochures, and books approximately every 3 months. Please take the time to stop by our stand and support this ministry. It may not be a CD you need, but could perhaps make a great impact on someone else! Special thanks to the Men s Club for sponsoring this kiosk.
