Multiply Gathering - November 2012 Welcome Todd Proctor Worship Aaron Keyes (Birmingham) Christian Huang (San Francisco) Teaching: Conviction Francis Chan Worship/Confession Teaching: Call David Platt Break/Reflection Conversation Francis Chan, David Platt, Todd Proctor Challenge David Platt Worship/Response Aaron Keyes (Birmingham) Christian Huang (San Francisco) Commissioning Francis Chan 1

Conviction Francis Chan And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. Matthew 10:38-39 2

Call David Platt As Disciples of Jesus Let s in the authority of Christ. m Jesus is not just the personal Lord and Savior over us. m Jesus is the Lord and Savior over all. He has authority over nature and nations. He has authority over disease and demons. He has authority over sin and death. He has authority over life. He has authority over life. m Jesus authority compels us to go. His worth is the of our mission. His worship is the of our mission. m Jesus authority gives us confidence as we go. This gospel will. This mission will. Let s the command of Christ. m This is not a comfortable call for most Christians to come, be baptized, and sit in one location. m This is a costly command for Christian to go, baptize, and make disciples of all nations. Jesus introduction in Matthew 4: Every follower of Jesus is a fisher of men. Jesus conclusion in Matthew 28: Every disciple is a. m We the Word. We speak about the gospel as we live according to the gospel. m We the Word. Baptism symbolizes identification with the person of Christ and inclusion in the body of Christ. m We the Word. We don t just receive the Word; we reproduce the Word. m We the world. This is not just a general command to make disciples among as many people as possible. This is a specific command to make disciples among every people group in the world. m As we make disciples of all nations, we will churches among all nations. Let s on the presence of Christ. m This mission is not based on who are or what can do. m This mission is based on who is and what He is able to do in and through our lives. m Together, let s experience the of His presence with us. m Together, let s hope in the of His return for us. 3

Conversation Francis Chan, David Platt, Todd Proctor All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. Matthew 28:19-20 4

Challenge/Commissioning Francis Chan, David Platt But he said to me, My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 2 Corinthians 12:9 5

Next Steps... Pray Begin praying now about how you will specifically and practically make disciples of all nations. Think of specific people you know with whom you might be able to begin a disciple making relationship. These people may already be followers of Christ, or they may not be followers of Christ yet. Think about others you can encourage and mobilize to join with you in making disciples. List the name or names of individuals you might lead to become disciple makers in the coming year: Plan Plan to contact the person or people God brings to your mind as soon as possible. Set a time to meet with them and then guard that time on your calendar. Plan how you will intentionally begin to lead them to become disciple makers. If they are not yet followers of Jesus, how will you begin to lead them to Him? If they are already followers of Jesus, how will you begin to lead them to more fully understand what it means to be a disciple and make disciples? Jot down a plan of action for how you will intentionally begin to make disciples among the people (or with the person) God has placed on your mind. 6

Join a Biblical Community If you are not a part of a local church, find a gospel-centered body of believers with whom you can worship and make disciples alongside. If you are not involved in a smaller group of believers with whom you are intentionally sharing life, find a group like this and begin making disciples alongside them. Write down anything God is prompting you to do concerning church membership or locking arms together with a smaller group of believers who are committed to making disciples within your local church. Commit to Make Disciples As you commit to making disciples over the next year, we would love to have the privilege of praying for you, sending you encouragement throughout the year, and providing you with additional resources to serve you. Let us know about your commitment by indicating your response on the Multiply website: MultiplyMovement.com/Commit. But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God. Acts 20:24 7

The Multiply Material The Multiply Material is now available on the Multiply website at MultiplyMovement.com. You can view the material and the leader videos online or download the material in PDF format. For those who prefer a hard copy, the Multiply Material is also available in book form. You can find Multiply by Francis Chan wherever books are sold. How to Use the Multiply Material 1. Be personal. The material is intended for a smaller, more intimate setting. Picture the kitchen table rather than a lecture hall. Ideally, you will be walking through the lessons with an individual you are discipling or with a small group. The more interaction you can have, the better. So ask questions and invite dialogue. 2. Be biblical. The ultimate goal is not to get through the material. We want to teach people what Jesus commanded (Matt 28:20), and this truth is contained in God s Word. Trust the Word to do the work, not the lessons. 3. Be flexible. Use the material as a help, not a straightjacket. The lessons are simply meant to equip and to come alongside you in this discipleship process. Feel free to linger on sections where there s a greater need. Don t be afraid to adapt. 4. Be wise. Remember who you re talking to. If you re with an unbeliever, certain aspects of the material will obviously be more critical than others. Whatever you do, don t give short attention to sharing the gospel just because you want to stay on pace with the material. New believers will likewise have particular needs. Meet people where they are and bring them along. 5. Be prepared. As a leader, you don t have to know everything or have all the answers. However, if you want to effectively instruct and equip others, be sure to read and think through the material before you meet, which also means reading through the key passages dealt with in each lesson. Anticipate questions. Understand the material as best you can. You can also use the Leader Videos provided on the Multiply website for help in this process. 6. Be engaged. That is, be willing not only to transfer new information, but also to build a relationship. Discipling someone will involve sharing life with them. Take every opportunity to model godliness in your actions and in your conversation. Truth is both taught and caught. 7. Be consistent. While discipleship is not formulaic, at least some structure is almost always helpful in such relationships. Have a set time to study the material, with the expectation that everyone will come prepared. Without being legalistic, try to stick to a plan. 8

Aaron Keyes (Birmingham Gathering) Aaron served as the worship pastor at Grace Fellowship Church (outside Atlanta, Georgia) for eight years. His heart is to restore the Word of God to the foundation of corporate worship, and to see a shift in the next generation of worship leaders (who lead songs) to becoming more biblically empowered worship pastors (who lead people). For years, Aaron has hosted worship pastors living in his home as part of an intensive worship discipleship course, involving daily teaching, mentoring, coaching, and community. Aaron and his wife of 11 years, Megan, have four sons Cooper, Judah, Nyle, and Linen. Aaron and Megan graduated from Furman University in Greenville, SC, where they were a part of planting CrossRoads Community Church (in Simpsonville, SC) with Aaron s parents, Steve and Becky. Aaron led worship at CrossRoads for seven years before moving to Grace. Christian Huang (San Francisco Gathering) Christian Huang was born and raised in San Francisco, California. His father started a ministry called SF City Impact 29 years ago in the worst district of San Francisco. The vision of City Impact is to see the Tenderloin District (one square mile, 37,000 residents in 586 apartment buildings, and 6,000 homeless) redeemed and restored. Christian helped co-found Adopt-A-Building, which is a movement to bring the gospel to every door with the hope of discipling residents to pastor their own building. In 2012, Christian became the Executive Director of SF City Impact. 10

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me the joy of your salvation, and uphold me with a willing spirit. Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will return to you. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, O God of my salvation, and my tongue will sing aloud of your righteousness. O Lord, open my lips, and my mouth will declare your praise. For you will not delight in sacrifice, or I would give it; you will not be pleased with a burnt offering. The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise. Psalm 51:10-17 12
