Historical Highlights of Zion Lutheran Church Over a hundred years ago, acting on a vision to create a place of worship that would serve themselves and many generations to come, the forefathers of Zion Lutheran Church built the church we call home today. It is a gift to us from another century. Now, it is up to us to make sure that Zion Lutheran Church does not stop with us. Our plans for strengthening and improving our church will make this our legacy to our children s grandchildren. 1901 Organization of a Ladies Aid, which continued until 1961 when it became the Zion Lutheran Church Women organization. 1903 Ten men with their families met to organize Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church of Soos Creek, Washington. They called the Rev. E.B. Slettedahl to be their pastor, sharing him with Kent Lutheran Church. Such shared ministry continued with ten pastors until 1949. The congregation members began to build their first church building, adding a bell tower in 1905. The subsequent Sunday School room is part of the existing old parsonage. 1921 Services were conducted in English on every other Sunday alternating with Norwegian. 1946 The decision to build a new church building - now used as Sunshine Mountain. 1949 The first resident pastor, Rev. Letters A Few Words From Our Leaders Dear Members & Friends of Zion, Through the years as we have worked together here at Zion, we have always had a vision. It has been a vision of working together under God s guidance to declare the wonder of God s grace in Christ Jesus. Our buildings and facilities are tools that we use to accomplish that vision. Today, as we embark on our Forward in Faith campaign to remodel the Narthex, enlarge the office area and update the kitchen we set our sites on a vision that will enrich and broaden the future ministry of our church. The theme of our program challenges us to move Forward in Faith in response to all that God has entrusted to us. The challenge for us is to give over and above our regular offering for the next 156 weeks (or three years) to accomplish this vision. One of the ways in which God blesses us is through our giving. Jesus said, Give and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over... Luke 6:38. The timing is perfect. We, the members of Zion, are ready for the challenge of this new program. May God bless our efforts. With you in God s Service, Pastor John Strand Pastor Dan Shaw Dear Friends in Christ, When we think about Zion Lutheran Church we realize that it s much more than just buildings we are a community of faith, blessed to have fellowship with one another and with our Heavenly Father. We are children of God called to live in His love and bear witness to salvation in Him. The theme of our campaign is Forward in Faith. This theme reflects Zion s journey as a faith community, and what we must have for our future. With your joyful giving we will meet our goals. Faith is not something we learn or earn but something God gives us. When we seek God s guidance, we will find it. This journey not only supplies our facilities needs as a congregation, it also builds each one of us up in spiritual growth by doing God s will. Ask yourself, How has my Lord blessed me? and What would God want me to do in thankful response to all of His blessings in my life? The future of Zion will be tremendously blessed through our financial commitments. Together we can have a lasting impact on the ministry of Zion for years to come and achieve an amazing victory for our Lord. Join us in joyful commitment, as together we move Forward in Faith! Blessings to you, Carol Matson Campaign Co-Chair Kevin Thomas Campaign Co-Chair
Zion Lutheran Church Forward in Faith Campaign Forward in Faith is Phase One of Zion s long-term Master Plan for our church. In October the congregation voted to take the first step in our long term vision to enhance the ministry and mission of Zion through a multi-phase site development process. Phase One involves a combined General Fund and Building Fund Campaign beginning in January 2009. The General Fund supports the ongoing mission and ministry of the congregation in support of staff, programs, worship and building maintenance. The Building Fund will raise money to address ministry needs in three areas. Narthex expansion. The plan calls for an expansion of the existing narthex area to double in size. The narthex is the welcoming center of our church. Having more room for folks to mingle before and after worship will enhance our ability to greet visitors and encourage fellowship time with all Zion members. We envision moving the coffee hour following the worship service to the expanded narthex. In addition, we plan to remodel the bathrooms to bring them up to code for handicapped access. These additions will make our building more user friendly and create a warm, welcoming entrance to the church. Office expansion. The plans also include a major expansion/revision of the office space. The offices are where staff and volunteers plan programs that are vital to the congregation s life. The planning work done in the offices during the week is seen on Sunday in worship services, Sunday School classes and youth activities. This work can be done more efficiently with all the staff closer together in their working environment. Currently the staff is spread out in two buildings and 3 offices. We hope to pull all the offices together to enhance efficiency. It will also free up Pastor Shaw s office and the Christian Youth and Family Ministry office to be used for classrooms. This space will be designed to easily convert to other ministry uses in the future. Kitchen renovation. The church kitchen serves the congregation s fellowship ministry. It is currently very small and needs upgrading both with new appliances and dish washing capacity. Fellowship and hospitality are important values at Zion and a new kitchen will enhance our ability to do more hospitality and fellowship ministry.
Zion Lutheran Church Forward in Faith Campaign Time frame for Phase One: January May 2009 - Building Fund Drive which will include opportunity for all Zion members to make commitments to support both the ongoing work of ministry through the General Fund and the special needs of the Building Fund. We will work with The Enrichment Group of Tacoma to lead us in this stewardship campaign. May June 2009 The congregation will hear a report on the Capital Fund Drive and will vote on the plans as drawn by the architect, Steve Hammer of Broweleit, Peterson, Hammer; Architects. This vote is needed to authorize the project to move to the construction phase. Summer/Fall 2009 Construction begins. Responding to God s Call Pray Pray for God to guide you as you consider how you can share your financial resources in our Forward in Faith campaign for both the annual budget of Zion as well as for our building fund over the next three years. Listen Tune your heart to discover how God wants you to give of your time, talents, and financial resources. Commit As God guides you, make your commitments to the Forward in Faith campaign. The key is not how much money is committed, but how much each of us sacrifices for the ministry of our church. Everyone s precious gifts are needed! Working together, we will provide strong ministry programs and facilities for the growing mission of Zion Lutheran, help ourselves and others come alive to the faith, and discover joy in our serving. Celebrate Thank the Lord for the miracles He has performed in your life, and give thanks that He is calling you to carry out His work in this place. On every Lord s Day you should put aside something from what you have earned during the week, and use it for this offering. The amount depends on how much the Lord has helped you earn. Commitment Worksheet The gifts we are bringing to the Lord in this campaign are not the leftovers of our lives - but are significant gifts. Therefore, it is helpful for us to do some figuring to find the ways and means of our gifts. We hope this worksheet will be helpful. From Capital Funds: savings, insurance, stock, property, vehicles, real estate, or other assets to be given. $ From Future Income: (calculate below) Annual income: $ x 3 years = $ Anticipated increases: $ x 3 years = $ TOTAL = $ (three-year income) $ x % (three-year income) (gift %) All or part of some gifts will be taken from savings or other assets. This 3-D image shows the commercial grade kitchen after renovation. The rendering to the right shows the longterm vision of Zion Lutheran Church. This includes the renovations described in Phase I of the Forward In Faith Campaign, as well as additional renovations of the Sunshine Mountain Building, parking and the sanctuary. While this is part of the Zion Master Plan, currently the church is focusing on Phase I and does not have a timeline for implementing the full Master Plan.
