HOW TO USE THIS JOURNAL 1. Each week of the Accountable Discipleship: Living in God s Household six-week study has a section in the journal. The first page of each section provides an order for daily prayer. Please set aside time each day to read your Bible, pray, and write in your journal. Daily prayer, Bible reading, and study are essential components of discovering and understanding the ministry of a pastoral leader. 2. There are Scripture lessons for six days of each week included in each section. There is space with each Scripture lesson for your reflections and questions from your reading of the Bible and Accountable Discipleship. It is important that you write down your comments and questions. This will help you to remember them when you come to the group meeting. 3. Be sure to bring your journal with you when you come to the weekly group meeting. Journal 1

Week 1 Daily Prayer: Loving God, help us realize that our deep longing for home is a deep longing for you. Send us to our homes, telling others of your eternal welcome. Amen. Daily Psalm: Psalm 107 Daily Scripture Reading Reflection, Silent and Written Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Hymn: Come, Let Us Use the Grace Divine (The United Methodist Hymnal, 606) Come, let us use the grace divine, and all with one accord, in a perpetual covenant join ourselves to Christ the Lord; give up ourselves, thru Jesus power, his name to glorify; and promise, in this sacred hour, for God to live and die. The covenant we this moment make be ever kept in mind; we will no more our God forsake, or cast these words behind. We never will throw off the fear of God who hears our vow; and if thou art well pleased to hear, come down and meet us now. Thee, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, let all our hearts receive, present with thy celestial host the peaceful answer give; to each covenant the blood apply which takes our sins away, and register our names on high and keep us to that day! Charles Wesley, 1762 Read Chapter 1 of Accountable Discipleship: Living in God s Household this week. Think about the questions at the end of the chapter. Write down your responses as well as your questions to share with the class on Sunday. Journal, Week 1 2

Daily Prayer: (The United Methodist Hymnal, 602) Blessed Lord, you have caused all holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant us so to hear them, read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest them, that we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life, which you have given us in our Savior Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you and in the Holy Spirit, One God, forever and ever. Amen. Daily Psalm: 2 Timothy 3:16-17 Daily Scripture Reading All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, so that everyone who belongs to God may be proficient, equipped for every good work. Reflection, Silent and Written Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Week 2 Hymn: Come, Divine Interpreter (The United Methodist Hymnal, 594) Come, divine Interpreter, bring me eyes thy book to read, ears the mystic words to hear, words which did from thee proceed, words that endless bliss impart, kept in an obedient heart. All who read, or hear, are blessed, if thy plain commands we do; of thy kingdom here possessed, thee we shall in glory view when thou comest on earth to abide, reign triumphant at thy side. Charles Wesley, 1762 Read Chapter 2 of Accountable Discipleship: Living in God s Household this week. Think about the questions at the end of the chapter. Write down your responses and your questions to share with the class on Sunday. Journal, Week 2 4

Week 3 Daily Prayer: God of all places, remind us that wherever we go, you have gone before us. Guide us, lead us, and help us trust that you will provide what we need. Amen. Daily Psalm: Psalm 8 Daily Scripture Reading Reflection, Silent and Written Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Hymn: Come, O Thou Traveler Unknown (The United Methodist Hymnal, 386, 387) Come, O thou Traveler unknown, whom still I hold, but cannot see! My company before is gone, and I am left alone with thee. With thee all night I mean to stay, and wrestle till the break of day. I need not tell thee who I am, my misery and sin declare; thyself hast called me by my name, look on thy hands and read it there. But who, I ask thee, who art thou? Tell me thy name, and tell me now. Yield to me now, for I am weak, but confident in self despair! Speak to my heart, in blessing speak, be conquered by my instant prayer. Speak, or thou never hence shalt move, and tell me if thy name is Love. Tis Love! tis Love! Thou diedst for me, I hear thy whisper in my heart. The morning breaks, the shadows flee, pure, Universal Love thou art. to me, to all, thy mercies move; thy nature, and thy name is Love. Charles Wesley, 1742 Read Chapter 3 of Accountable Discipleship: Living in God s Household this week. Think about the questions at the end of the chapter. Write down your responses and your questions to share with the class on Sunday. Journal, Week 3 6

Week 4 Daily Prayer: God of the Great Feast, just as you have welcomed us, let us welcome others to your table, where there is room enough for everyone and food enough for all. Amen. Daily Scripture: Ephesians 2:1-10 Daily Reading: From The Scripture Way of Salvation by John Wesley Reflection, Silent and Written Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Hymn: Love Divine, All Loves Excelling (The United Methodist Hymnal, 384) Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heaven, to earth come down; fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown! Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art; visit us with thy salvation; enter every trembling heart. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into every troubled breast! Let us all in thee inherit; let us find that second rest. Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be; end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty. Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive; suddenly return and never, nevermore thy temples leave. Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above, pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be. Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee; changed from glory into glory, till in heaven we take our place, till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise. Week 5 Daily Prayer: God of new life, through Christ you made your home with us. In Christ you let us make our home in you. For the good news of Christ we give you thanks! Amen. Daily Psalm: Micah 6:6-8 Daily Scripture Reading Reflection, Silent and Written Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Hymn: Let Us Plead for Faith Alone (The United Methodist Hymnal, 385) Let us plead for faith alone, faith which by our works is shown; God it is who justifies, only faith the grace applies. Active faith that lives within, conquers hell and death and sin, hallows whom it first made whole, forms the Savior in the soul. Let us for this faith contend, sure salvation is the end; heaven already is begun, everlasting life is won. Only let us persevere till we see our Lord appear, never from the Rock remove, saved by faith which works by love. Daily Prayer: A Covenant Prayer in the Wesleyan Tradition (The United Methodist Hymnal, 607) Daily Psalm: Psalm 96 Daily Scripture Reading Reflection, Silent and Written I am no longer my own, but yours. Put me to what you will, rank we with whom you will. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employed by you or laid aside for you, exalted for you or brought low by you. Let me be full, let me be empty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to your pleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, you are mine, and I am yours. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, let it be ratified in heaven. Amen. Prayers for the World, the Church, and Yourself Week 6 Hymn: Forth in Thy Name, O Lord (The United Methodist Hymal, 438) Forth in thy name, O Lord, I go, my daily labor to pursue; thee only thee, resolved to know in all I think or speak or do. The task thy wisdom hath assigned, O let me cheerfully fulfill; in all my works thy presence find, and prove thy good and perfect will. Thee may I set at my right hand, whose eyes mine inmost substance see, and labor on at thy command, and offer all my works to thee. For thee delightfully employ whate er thy bounteous grace hath given; and run my course with even joy, and closely walk with thee to heaven. Charles Wesley, 1749 Journal, Week 6 12
