Dear Parishioners and Visitors, The Office of Readings for the beginning of Lent, which is one part of the Liturgy of the Hours that the ordained promise to pray upon ordination, focuses our attention on the Exodus story, how God brought the people of Israel out of slavery in Egypt through the miraculous parting of the Red Sea. It is in that story that we hear about the history of the Passover meal, a story that is also recounted in the First Reading on Holy Thursday at the Mass of the Lord s Supper. At the end of that narrative, God prescribes, You must celebrate this day throughout your generations as a perpetual institution. The way in which Catholics fulfill this prescription of the Law is to celebrate the Mass in which the blood of the Lamb of God saves us from death, and the unleavened bread, broken and shared, nourishes us for our exodus through this world to the Promised Land of Heaven. Our Jewish brothers and sisters, of course, still celebrate the Passover in quite the same way in which Jesus did, and one of the reasons that the celebration of Easter moves from year to year is because, just like Passover, it is celebrated after the first full moon after the spring equinox. Yearly, OLGC has invited the community to celebrate a traditional Passover or Seder Supper which helps us to understand our roots in the Jewish faith, and the mind of Jesus who took that opportunity to institute the Eucharist. I invite members of both OLGC and St. Ambrose to this year s annual Seder Supper, held at 6pm on Monday, March 26 in the OLGC gym. Sign-up are at all church entrances. A donation of $5 per person (children 12 and under free) will be collected at the door. It is followed by a parish feast and is a nice way to celebrate as a community during Holy Week. I look forward to seeing you there. Fr. Michael THE SACRAMENTS Reconciliation: At St. Ambrose Saturday: 2:30-3:30 pm or by appointment. (no confessions on Holy Days and on holidays.) Sunday evenings during Lent at OLGC from 6:00-6:40pm on 3/4, 3/11 & 3/18. Baptism: Baptisms may be scheduled during Masses or outside of Mass. For information and to schedule a date, please call the parish office. Marriage: Arrangements should be made with our staff at least six months in advance. RCIA Program: Persons wishing to explore the Catholic faith and receive the sacraments of initiation, please call the director of faith formation at the parish office. Pastoral Ministry: Parishioners confined to home who would like to receive the Eucharist should contact the parish office. 2 CALENDAR OF THE WEEK Saturday, March 3 4:00 PM Mass (At St. Ambrose) + Betsy Kozarski / Husband, Dan Sunday, March 4 3rd Sunday of Lent 7:45 AM Mass (At OLGC) Mass for the People & Vocations 10:00 AM Mass (At OLGC) + Samuel Ferrell / Carol 11:30 AM Mass (At St. Ambrose) + Kenneth Coyle / Family 6:00-6:40 pm - Confessions at OLGC 7:00 PM Mass (At OLGC) Fr. A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE from the Office of Family Life Education (A Hope Appeal Agency) Today s gospel says Jesus chased the merchants out of the temple, it does not say He was angry. Jesus teaches us to act from conviction and not from anger. He did not condemn the merchants, only their business practice. Attack the behavior and not the person. News / About Town ST. What snack originated during Lent because it contains only flour, water and salt? The PRETZEL-has its origin as an official food of Lent. Much of the information available is based on tradition. One tradition says a monk in the 600s in Italy was preparing a special Lenten bread of water, flour and salt. To remind his brother monks that Lent was a time of prayer, he rolled the bread dough in strips and then shaped each strip in the form of crossed arms. They were called bracellae, the Latin word for "little arms." From this word, the Germans derived the word bretzel which has since mutated to the familiar word pretzel. The Vatican library actually has a manuscript illustrating one of the earliest pictures and descriptions of the pretzel. (Manuscript Code no. 3867). 6
