FOLLOWING CHRIST If you ve ever had an unpleasant but somewhat amusing practical joke played on you, then you have some understanding of how Jeremiah feels today when he tells God good one you duped me. We can almost see him shaking his head with a bit of a rueful smile, but an angry undertone in his voice. In similar fashion, Peter thinks Jesus is duping him when Jesus starts to explain that being Messiah means suffering and dying, and being a follower of the Messiah means taking up a cross and doing the same. Jeremiah tries to deny God s will for him by trying to shut up; Peter who has just been made the foundation of the church out and out denies the teaching of Jesus, for which he is named Satan today. Fortunately for us, Jeremiah comes to realize that to have the word of God placed in your heart means that it will be futile to try and keep silent, even if it means scorn and derision from those around you. Luckily Peter ultimately returned to the faith he professed in last week s Gospel, and came to understand our need as baptized followers of Christ to follow in his way, even when it means following him to our very death. He is the Senior Pastor of Lakewood in Houston, Texas. Osteen's televised sermons are seen by over 7 million viewers weekly and over 20 million monthly in over 100 countries. His sermons are also broadcast 24 hours a day on Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Osteen has written seven best sellers, the first of which sold almost 5 million copies and was number one on the NY Times best seller list. Lakewood was actually a basketball stadium. It is the Compaq Center, former home of the Houston Rockets, and it can seat 16,000 people. It has 4 services each weekend, and over 50,000 people attend. During the week, there are times for grief sharing, praying for sick children, Bible study and even a drive-through healing service! This is a very popular church! What is it about Osteen that makes him so popular? All of his sermons and books are about the idea that God will take care of us if we just have faith. There is no mention of sin, no mention of pain or suffering, just a very positive idea that God wants us to succeed and if we have faith, He will enable us to do so. This idea of God wanting us to be successful on earth is known as the Prosperity Gospel. It is also called heresy by many other religious leaders. Why is that so? What is wrong with being positive about God wanting us to be successful? The answer to that is in today s Gospel, when Jesus says, You are thinking not as God does, but as human beings do. What profit would there be for one to gain the whole world and forfeit his life? People like what Osteen has to say. He puts no responsibility on them, he just says that if you have faith in God, he will reward you. (Surveys say over 17% of Christians believe this.) This is exactly the reasoning of the Pharisees which Jesus was so vehemently against. The Pharisees thought that success in this life was a sign of God s favor. Those who were poor, had diseases, or were uneducated, had done something wrong and were to be looked down upon. Recall the time that the Pharisee and the tax collector were praying in the temple. The Pharisee thanked God that he was not like the rest of mankind, greedy, adulterous and dishonest. He was proud of himself because he had the good life. The tax collector just prayed to God for forgiveness. According to Jesus, it was the tax collector who went home justified. The Prosperity Gospel is like the Pharisee in that we can tell who are God s chosen by how successful they are. But, if we think about it, what will impress God when we reach our final judgement? Will he be impressed that we had a fine house and the best of cars? Will he be impressed by someone because they were educated in the finest schools, lived in the best neighborhoods or had power and wealth? Will He be impressed that someone was a top lawyer, CEO of a major corporation, a President, or even a Pope? According to Jesus (again in today s Gospel), we must take up our cross and be ready to suffer to follow him. It is how we use our God given gifts to serve others that matters, not how good we have life. He doesn t reward us in this life, just the next. ~DN
