He is comple ng an ar cle on the Natchez Trace in the War of 1812 to be published in the Journal of Mississippi History, and he is wri ng a book on the same topic. He spent two years loca ng documents rela ng to military ac vity on the Natchez Trace a er learning that many have never been published. This past year, Mr. Turnbow published an ar cle about new evidence he discovered on the death of explorer Meriwether Lewis. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Lewis and Clark Trust and on the Governance Commi ee of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Founda on. Lewis s mysterious death was the topic of his play Inquest on the Natchez Trace, which was produced in 2009. Mr. Turnbow prac ces law in Franklin, Tennessee. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and the University of Tennessee College of Law. Two hundred years ago Tennesseans began their par cipa on in the War of 1812, playing an essen al role in the ul mate victory over the Bri sh. So many people from Tennessee volunteered for service in the Natchez Expedi on of early 1813, the First Creek War in later 1813 through 1814, fought in that area that is now Alabama and Florida, as well as extraordinary service with General Andrew Jackson in New Orleans on the 8th of January, 1815, that the state earned its nickname, The Volunteer State. As the featured speaker for the Tennessee Society SAR Annual Mee ng Banquet, Mr. Turnbow will inform about this important era in United States history that was thoroughly influenced by our Tennessee Volunteer ancestors. Saturday the 16 th starts off with the BOG mee ng in the morning followed by the Youth luncheon. A ladies tour has been planned for Saturday morning. Workshops have been arranged for our all Chapter Presidents, Registrars and Secretaries. We hope you will take advantage of these workshops. This group par cipates in events across our state and represents our Society in a professional and polished manner. I personally want to thank this group who has relessly supported me and the en re society this year. We have just held our winter Board of Governors mee ng at the Cool Springs Marrio in Franklin, TN on Saturday January 12, Charles N. Dammann 2013. A great a endance of BOG members and compatriots from across our great state provided an opportunity to meet friends, make new ones and conduct the business of our society. Reports from the officers, chapter presidents and commi ee chairs will be posted on the TNSSAR website during the week of January 14, 2013. If you were not in a endance at the BOG mee ng I encourage you to review these reports to learn more about what is going on in the TNSSAR. During our BOG mee ng the TNSSAR state treasurer reported that we are under budget and should finish the year with a surplus of approximately $3,000.00. During the BOG a er officers and commi ee chairman had made their reports I gave a brief summary of the status of the goals that had been set for the 2012-2013 year. TNSSAR goals for the year can be found on our website. TNSSAR membership goal of 1100 net We finished the year 2012 with 1109 members, a record membership for our society. The TNSSAR state conference chairman, Tim Adams (President of the John Sevier Chapter) made a presenta on to the BOG concerning our 2013 State Conference to be held on March 15-16, 2013 in Cha anooga. We have a great conference planned with programs for compatriots and spouses. WATAUGA CREATES SPEAKERS BUREAU The Watauga Chapter SAR has developed a Speakers Bureau to give lectures on different aspects of the Revolu onary War. The Na onal Society SAR Board of Trustees has approved the Tennessee Society SAR s offer to host the 2017 Na onal Congress. While the proposal was made to host in Knoxville, Nashville and Cha anooga will also be evaluated, but the Tennessee Society has been clear in its expression that Knoxville is the best place for the Congress. President Charles Dammann has named former TNSSAR President Rick Hollis as Host Society Planning Commi ee Chair with State Treasurer David Johnston and Stephen Holston Chapter President Lee Johnson as Co-chairs. Hollis and Johnston represent the state society on the Na onal Society s Congress Planning Commi ee, the group responsible for planning and execu ng Congresses. The following Congress loca ons have been approved: Kansas City (2013), Greenville, South Carolina (2014), Louisville, Kentucky (2015), Boston, Massachuse s (2016) followed by Knoxville, Tennessee (2017). 2017 is the 230th anniversary of the signing of the United States Cons tu on and Knoxville has a direct connec on, unlike most ci es in America. Of the 39 men who signed the US Cons tu on, William Blount, a North Carolina delegate died in Knoxville and is buried in the graveyard of First Presbyterian Church near the Blount Mansion. The Blount Mansion overlooks the Tennessee River in downtown Knoxville. Furthermore, tourist opportuni es are abundant in Knoxville and East Tennessee. Tours to Oak Ridge, Museum of Appalachia, and a tour that will include John Sevier s home, Sam Houston s School House, and Cades Cove in the Smokey Mountains will be an excep on treat for delegates. A shopping expedi on to Pigeon Forge and/or Gatlinburg will be organized, too. And, of course, there is Dollywood, one of the most popular theme parks in the na on. The Sevier Sta on Society C.A.R. has been reestablished by Alicia Clark, who is doing a fantas c job. Compatriot Rick Hollis presented a tribute to Abram Maury, founder of Franklin, Tennessee, a the na onal mee ng of The Huguenot Society of the Founders of Manakin in the Colony of Virginia, held in Franklin. Maury s father, Col. Abraham Maury, was an officer with General George Washington at Valley Forge. Maury s uncle, Rev. James Maury, was an early educator at the Maury Classical School for Boys in Virginia. The Rev. James Maury educated and influenced Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, Meriwether Lewis among a vast array of other prominent early Virginia and American leaders. In 1798, Abram Maury led a company of his Virginia Huguenot rela ves and friends across the mountains and through the wilderness to what is now Williamson County, where he had acquired a large tract of land. He then planned and laid out a new town that he named Franklin. One was Abram s son, Abram P. Maury, who at age 16 served as editor of the leading news paper in St. Louis, and later served as a delegate to the Tennessee Cons tu onal Conven on in 1836, where he led an unsuccessful fight to outlaw the slave trade in Tennessee. He also represented this District in the US Congress where he and his fellow Huguenot, David Crocke, were the only members of the Tennessee delega on to fight against President Andrew Jackson s Indian Reloca on Act that led to the Trail of Tears. One of Maury s Franklin cousins was the fabled Pathfinder of the Seas Mathew Fontaine Maury. His truly excep onal exploits were far too extensive to cover adequately, but they included mapping the fastest sailing routes in the world s oceans, serving as a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris, and he was one of General Robert E.
