Leader DEVOTIONAL Leaders: this is just for you! Read ahead of time to engage with the Bible story on an adult level and prepare your heart to teach on Sunday. Isaiah s name means Yahweh is salvation. God called Isaiah to be a prophet when King Uzziah s reign was ending more than 700 years before Jesus was born. At the time Isaiah spoke to the people of Judah, the kingdom of Judah was very wealthy. But the people did not follow God. They worshiped false idols, cheated one another, and mistreated the poor. Isaiah spoke to the people of Judah at a critical time in their history. After King Uzziah died, the people were afraid. They were vulnerable to their enemies, and their new king was less than ideal. Isaiah s prophecies warned the people that God would judge them, but Isaiah also spoke words of hope. He told of how God would one day rescue those who were faithful to Him. Perhaps the most amazing of all are Isaiah s detailed prophecies about Jesus His birth and His suffering and death. Jesus Himself read from the Book of Isaiah, telling the people that He was the One the Scriptures spoke of. As you teach kids, help them see how Jesus fulfilled God s promises spoken by the prophet Isaiah. God kept His promise to send a king from the family of Jesse, the father of King David. (Luke 3:23-32) The Spirit of the Lord rested on Jesus. (Matt. 3:16-17) He was filled with wisdom and understanding. (Luke 2:40) He came to bring salvation to all the nations. (Acts 13:47-48) Isaiah s prophecies from God did not speak just to the people of his time; they also speak to us. Hundreds of years before it happened, Isaiah told of how Jesus would be born and how He would suffer and die to take away the sins of His people. We look forward to the day when King Jesus will come back and rule forever. Jesus is the promised Messiah. He will make all of the prophets words come true.

The BIBLE STORY Anticipating the Coming King Isaiah 11:1-10 The people of Judah were afraid. Their king, Uzziah, had died. Now they had a bad king Ahaz and their enemies, the Assyrians, threatened to destroy them. God sent Isaiah the prophet to give the people a message of hope. God had a plan a very good plan for their future. Isaiah told people about God s plan. A King is coming! Isaiah told the people about the King and what the day will be like when the Messiah comes to rescue His people and be their King forever. The King will come from Jesse s family, Isaiah said. Jesse was King David s father. That meant God was going to keep His promise that someone from David s family would be King forever. Isaiah said, God s Spirit will be with Him. The Spirit will help Him. He will be wise and understanding. He will know God and respect Him. Isaiah said that the coming King will always do the right thing. He will be a good judge; He will be fair, and He will do what He says He will do. Isaiah said that the Messiah will bring peace. In His kingdom, the wolf will live with the lamb. The leopard will lie next to the goat. Calves and lions will eat together, and a child will lead them. Cows and bears will eat next to one another, and their young will lie down together. Lions will eat straw like oxen. Young children will play near snakes. But none of these animals will hurt or kill anything or anyone. Everyone on the earth will know the Lord. The earth will be filled with knowledge of Him, just like the sea is filled with water. In the future, this King will bring the nations together. All the people will come to Him, and He will rule in glory. Christ Connection: Isaiah and many other prophets in the Old Testament told about a King who would come and rule forever. Jesus is the promised Messiah. He will make all these words come true.

Small Group OPENING Welcome time Greet each kid as he or she arrives. Use this time to help new kids connect to your group. As kids arrive, ask them about their favorite Christmas traditions. Say Christmas is such a fun and joyous holiday! All of us have different traditions that we like to celebrate with our families, but did you know there was a time before people celebrated Christmas? Our Bible story is from hundreds of years before the first Christmas, but it still has to do with Christmas. How can that be? Activity page The Lion and the Lamb activity page, 1 per kid Invite kids to complete The Lion and the Lamb activity page. Challenge them to change one letter in each word to complete the word ladder, eventually turning the word lamb into the word lion. Say A lamb wouldn t feel safe around a meat-eater like a lion. However, in today s Bible story, we will learn about a time when these animals will lay down together. What could cause something like that? Key passage activity Key Passage Poster green and brown construction paper strips (as described below) tape Before class, write out the key passage on strips of green construction paper so that the strips when arranged in order form a basic Christmas tree shape (small at the top, wide at the base). Write the reference on a small rectangle of brown paper to be the trunk of the tree. For larger groups, you may want to make more than one set. Pass out the strips and encourage the class to put them in order to form a tree. Tape the finished tree to the white board. Say Our key passage is from the Book of Matthew, the first book in the New Testament. It reminds us that Jesus came to earth as a baby, but even before that God s plan was to save us from sin through Jesus. Our story today tells us that long before Jesus was even born, God told of His plan to send Jesus to be the King who would make all things new, bring peace, and fill the earth with God s glory. Session starter Fit for a king Invite the class to sit in a circle. Start the game by saying When the king arrives, I ll serve him and stating a food. Secretly decide on a rule everyone must follow, such as all foods must start with A. When kids suggest foods that follow the rule, respond, a food fit for the king! If kids suggest foods that do not follow the rule, say, you can t serve that! Continue until kids have guessed the secret rule. Say Isaiah wrote a lot about the coming King, Jesus. Isaiah s writing helped God s people prepare their hearts and minds for Jesus arrival. Today we will learn about some of the things Isaiah told them about the coming King. Transition to large group

Small Group LEADER Bible story review & Bible skills Bibles, 1 per kid Main Point Poster Say Raise your hand if you had heard this Bible story before today. Whether you ve heard a Bible story one time or a hundred times, there is always something new that we can learn. God s Word is living and active, so there is always more that God can reveal about Himself through what we read in Scripture! Let s review some of the details from today s story. Provide Bibles and guide kids to locate Isaiah 11. Remind them that the Book of Isaiah is in the Old Testament. Invite a volunteer to identify which book comes before Isaiah. (Song of Solomon) Choose another volunteer to identify which book comes after Isaiah. (Jeremiah) Say We can read the story about God speaking through His prophet Isaiah. What s even better is that we can continue reading in the Bible to see that God did keep His promise to send Jesus! Let s test our memories to see how much we remember about today s story. Decide if each of these statements is true or false. Read the following statements. Call on kids to answer. Isaiah was a prophet in the New Testament. (false, Old Testament) The Book of Isaiah is found in the Bible in the division of the Major Prophets. (true) Isaiah said that a King would come from Jesse s family. (true, Isa. 11:1) Isaiah said that God s Spirit would be with the coming King. (true, Isa. 11:2) Isaiah said that the coming King would usually do the right thing. (False, He would always do the right thing; Isa. 11:4) Isaiah said that the Messiah would bring war. (False, He would bring peace; Isa. 11:6-9) Isaiah said everyone on the earth will know the Lord. (true, Isa. 11:9) Isaiah said the King will bring the nations together. (true, Isa. 11:10) Isaiah prophesied about a coming storm. (False, Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah.) Jesus is the promised Messiah. (true, John 4:25-26) Say Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah, or King. The King God was going to send would be perfect. He will fix all that is broken in the world and make the earth a safe and beautiful place, as though sin has never existed. We know that Jesus work restoring the world isn t done yet because we can still see the effects of sin around us. Even so, Jesus was already born and already died to save us from sin and make us right with God. When we trust Jesus, our hearts change and we can live with God forever! One day, Jesus will return to fulfill the rest of the words Isaiah wrote. Review the gospel with boys and girls. Explain that kids are welcome to speak with you or another teacher if they have questions. (Feel free to use the GOSPEL visual aid from your class bulletin board.)

Engage Option 1: Lion and lamb ornament Lion and Lamb Ornament printable scissors canning jar lids with bands, 1 per kid glue ribbon Before class, print a Lion and Lamb Ornament printable for each child. Instruct the kids to cut around the circle carefully. Provide each kid with a canning jar lid and band. Help the kids to glue the circle cutout on the lid. Then show them how to tie about six inches of ribbon into a loop, and attach it to the jar band with a slipknot. Put glue around the inner lip of the band and press the lid into the band to hold it all together. Say In our Bible story, we learned that Jesus will bring peace that will allow predators like lions and prey like lambs to live together. We also know that the Bible calls Jesus a Lion and a Lamb. These names express both the power and strength of Jesus to save us and protect us, and the gentle, humble nature of Jesus to die on the cross for our sins. When you take these ornaments home, you can hang them on your family s Christmas tree to remember that Isaiah prophesied about the coming Messiah. Option 2: Paper chains Bibles, 1 per kid green and red strips of construction paper markers tape Distribute strips of red and green construction paper to the kids. Guide them to open their Bibles to Isaiah 11:1-10. Invite them to use the Bible story passage as a guide and write on each red strip something that Isaiah said about the coming Messiah. Instruct them to list on the green strips things they are thankful to God for or reasons they celebrate Christmas. Allow volunteers to share what they wrote with the class. Then direct kids to use tape to link the strips together and form a paper chain. Invite kids to take their chains home and hang them up as decoration during the Christmas season. Say We have many things we can thank Jesus for as we celebrate Christmas. Jesus came because we needed Him. Jesus was born to rescue us from sin. Prayer time Ask the kids to think about a time they had to wait for something they were really excited for. Say The things we wait for cannot satisfy us perfectly, but Jesus can. God s people were waiting for the Messiah Isaiah prophesied about. We don t have to wait any longer! Jesus already came to earth to save us from sin. When we trust in Him, we are forgiven and made right with God. Take prayer requests. Pray, thanking God for sending Jesus and giving us a reason to celebrate at Christmas.

Closing and Pick-Up Bible Story Coloring Page, 1 per kid crayons or markers Big Picture Cards After prayer time is done, continue any unfinished activities and/or let kids color this week s Bible Story Coloring Page until parents arrive. Send each kid home with this week's Big Picture Card so kids and their parents can interact with the biblical content at home.
