BE STILL & KNOW a 40-Day Devotional Winter. It is such a daunting season of snow and ice, cold winds and frigid temperatures, yet in it, there is serene beauty and quiet. Although we can t see it, under the frozen ground, nature is preparing to reveal the beauty of spring. What we see outside our windows, we all too often feel in our hearts: a winter that we hope God will turn into spring.we pray this blog helps you see what God is doing under the surface of your circumstances. We hope this provides a framework for you to Be Still and Know that He is God, and see where He has been working and restoring amid your winter season. We know your time is precious, so we have kept the devotionals brief. Find a spot that is comfortable, relaxing and free of distraction. Grab a hot cup of tea, a warm blanket, your journal and just sit for 10-15 minutes each day. Broken into three stages, this 40-day devotional provides scripture, thought-provoking questions, and action steps to guide you through this process. Stage I - Reflect. The first days of reflection guide you to better understand what season you have faced and are facing today. Stage II - Discover. These days challenge you to be still and see where God was and is during your winter season...how He was and is working, rescuing, building, transforming and redeeming your story. Stage III - Purpose. This stage helps you seek God s guidance and His direction towards clarity of purpose in your life. It also challenges you to ask God how you can glorify Him with your story. As this 40-day devotional begins, so does the Lenten Season. So, we also pray your heart is encouraged in remembering that through Christ s death on the cross, we are able to see how deeply our God treasures transformation. For in His death, we see the very weight and darkness of our sin that hung our Savior on the Cross. But in His resurrection, we see Hell defeated, we see the power of His love for us, and we see the Victory of Eternal Life. We pray you find this blog to provide daily minutes of opportunity to sit at the feet of Jesus, to rest in His presence, to be inspired by His Holiness, to be strengthened by His love, and to hear His voice. We pray you are encouraged and challenged to place your hope in His hands, to journal and to pray, to read His word, and to find peace in His everlasting arms. In this Lenten Season, we pray God transforms your Winter into Spring. And we pray you are inspired to trust that God has a plan. And to hear it, you need only be still.

DAY ONE Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Winter Thoughts ~ Have you had a season of your life that felt like a never-ending winter? Have you felt far from the Lord and struggled to know how to come out of the cold? Action ~ Look at the next 40 days and mark in your calendar where you are going to Be Still, so that you can Know that He is God. DAY TWO Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 We all experience that season in our lives Thoughts ~ We spend our lives floating in and out of seasons. Some are joyful and content. And others are winters. Where are you right now? What season are you in? Where do you feel and sense God? Where do you see Him? Action ~ Have you marked your calendar over the next 40 days to help you schedule time with the Lord?

DAY THREE Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 When it is darker than usual Thoughts ~ Cloudy. Dark. Tears. Or maybe even emotionless. Sometimes it is difficult to find joy in the world around us. Do you ever emotionally or spiritually, mentally or physically feel heavy-hearted? Action ~ Find and write 1-2 verses that either speak to those heavy-hearted feelings or help you most in those moments. DAY FOUR Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Colder and more still than we are used to Thoughts ~ Winter can be a short or long period of time. The feelings of winter can exist because of an event or a state of mind. What part do you play in a season of Winter? Has someone been cold to you? Have you been cold to somebody? Did something happen to you? Did you cause something? How does this season make you feel? Action ~ On the lines in your journal, list the experiences and the feelings you have faced in the winters you have considered.

DAY FIVE Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 More barren than we feel our hearts can endure Thoughts ~ In reflecting on your life, what expectations or experiences have you had that left you feeling empty? Action ~ Share on the lines in your journal what expectations have not been met in your Winter and what experiences have made you feel broken. DAY SIX Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Where there is a deep hunger for something new Thoughts ~ After Winter, is Spring. Through the season of Winter, Christ has greater plans: Spring. It is in the deep hunger for renewal that we can find hope, joy, and grace. Does your heart desire to change from a Winter season? Action ~ Read 2 Corinthians 5:17. If you do not have a Bible, search The Bible App (free) or google it. Read different translations of this verse (such as: NLT, NIV, The Message, NASB). What thoughts and emotions do you feel and think when you read this verse?

DAY SEVEN Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 And an even greater hope for renewal Thoughts ~ When we reflect, we are able to see where we have been and from what God has delivered us. Reflect on a time in the past when you were in a different season of Winter. Action ~ On the lines in your journal, describe where you have seen God s hand of hope in your life. Where were you and what brought you that hope? DAY EIGHT Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 Be still Thoughts ~ Why do we find it so challenging to be still, let alone be still before the Lord? Action ~ Find a ten minute time frame today to specifically be still before the Lord to listen to Him without distractions of your phone or others needing you. Ask Him to speak to you, and listen in the quiet.

DAY NINE Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 and know Thoughts ~ What does the word know mean to you? When you are reading Scripture - reading the very Word of God - do you truly KNOW this is His promise to YOU? It is His Guide for You. And His Grace to you. When you read His Word, where do you find the most comfort? The most direction? The most hope? Action ~ Read Psalm 46:10. Write down three different versions of this verse. Then, read the verses surrounding Psalm 46:10. As you read and write God s word, in what ways is God speaking to you? DAY TEN Part 1 ~ A time of reflection Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 that I am God. Thoughts ~ God is bigger than any trial and tribulation we are facing. How do you feel about God right now? Are you angry? Do you struggle to trust Him? Are there areas in which you are grateful? Action ~ Review the verse in Day 9. Listen to His love for you written in His words and consider the power of the statement I am God.

DAY ELEVEN At times, the quiet of winter can be deafening Action ~ Ask the Lord to help you be honest with yourself and to show you roadblocks or excuses you have made or are you making to fill the emptiness that surrounds you in a season of Winter. Whether they are tiny or big, are there signs He is fighting for you? DAY TWELVE Yet it is often in the stillness that we can also experience true rest. Thoughts ~ It is in the stillness and quiet that He reveals Himself to you. When we settle our hearts and minds, we allow God to speak to us. Whether it be an audible word (though often not), a direction to a specific Bible verse, a directed thought, a sense of peace, He meets us and speaks to us in those quiet times. Action ~ Pray to God and specifically ask Him to walk you through to Springtime to renewal. Ask Him to show you how He is fighting for you, and ask Him to show you what you need to do to be renewed in Him. Write this prayer here.

DAY THIRTEEN Let God provide a space for you to experience winter in a new way Thoughts ~ Is there anything you need to confess to God, to get off your chest, so that you can experience Him in a new way? Action ~ Write below anything that you may be harboring or holding onto that has made God feel distant or absent in your life. DAY FOURTEEN In a way that allows you to experience the quiet as a moment to breathe Thoughts ~ When we are vulnerable with ourselves and with God, we are able to breathe a sigh of relief. God loves us so much that He is with us every step of our journey. Action ~ Be challenged: share your season and maybe your winter -- with someone. At the very least, write it down. When we speak our hearts, we experience freedom.

DAY FIFTEEN BE STILL TO LISTEN Thoughts ~ What prevents you from listening? What is the loudest thing in your world? What is your biggest distraction? Action ~ Consider fasting for the remaining days from the one thing that is most distracting in your life right now. Take some time today to be quiet, still, and silent. Allow only the Holy Spirit to speak to you. DAY SIXTEEN BE STILL TO HOPE Thoughts ~ What do you hope for? Have you asked God to give you hope? Can you see places and times in the past or present where He has given you hope? Action ~ Read Jeremiah 29:11, 1 Corinthians 2:9, Romans 12:12, Romans 15:13, Psalm 27:4-5 and Revelation 21:4. Take 10 minutes today to let God tell you what He wants for you, what He will do for you. Let it sink in. Now, believe it is true!

DAY SEVENTEEN BE STILL TO BE ENCOURAGED Thoughts ~ Can you think of a time when you were encouraged by a scripture? How about a time when a friend encouraged you and you knew it came straight from God? Do you enjoy being an encouragement to others? Action ~ Pray and ask God to send some encouragement to you today or send you to someone who God knows needs encouragement. DAY EIGHTEEN BE STILL TO BE CHALLENGED Thoughts ~ Over the past 17 days has God given you a glimpse of how He wants you to love your world? How He has gifted you to love or help others? Or how He has uniquely designed you so that you can serve Him in some capacity? Maybe you have heard Him calling you to move in a new direction? Action ~ Write down what God has shared with your heart, and tell a trusted friend what you are hearing and feeling and sensing from Him. No matter how crazy it may sound, telling someone will make it more real and may provide both clarification and confirmation.

DAY NINETEEN BE STILL TO BE TRANSFORMED Thoughts ~ Can you point to a time in your life where you experienced God s life-changing transformation? Over the past few weeks, has God revealed something in you that needs transformation: a habit or a thought process or a relationship? Action ~ If you have experienced life transformation write it down, and express how God brought it about. If you feel you need transformation write down some steps to begin that transformation. And if you are unsure about first steps, ask God to show you what you can do to begin the process. DAY TWENTY BE STILL AND FIND FRIENDSHIP Thoughts ~ God gives us people to help us through the hard times and celebrate the good ones. Who has God given to you that has clearly served as a friend and a messenger from Him? God also deeply desires to be your friend. Do you consider God a friend? How close of a friend is He? Do you long for a closer friendship with Him? Action ~ Send a note to that person whom God has used in your life as a messenger for Him. Let them know how God used them in your life. Then consider what you wish your relationship with Jesus looked like if it is not currently what you wish it to be. Write down steps you can take to achieve the relationship you would like to have with the Lord.

DAY TWENTY ONE BE STILL AND FIND COURAGE Thoughts ~ What are you most afraid of? A person? A thing? A situation? A place? What gives you courage? As you reflect in your life, are there times you can point to in which you know God gave you the courage to do something you know you wouldn t have been able to do without Him? In looking ahead, is He asking you to do something that you don t have the courage to do now? Action ~ Pray and ask the Lord for the courage you need to do what He is asking you to do. DAY TWENTY TWO BE STILL AND FIND STRENGTH Thoughts ~ In what areas of your life do you feel weak? In establishing and keeping healthy boundaries? In relationships? In a long time hurt? In temptations you face? Have you asked God for strength in this area? Has He given it to you? If so, how? Action ~ Read Philippians 4:13, Isaiah 40:29, Isaiah 40:31, Ephesians 6:10, 2 Corinthians 12:9-10, Psalm 46:1. Meditate on these and in the truth of God s strength. Believe and know that He is God today.

DAY TWENTY THREE BE STILL AND FIND LOVE Thoughts ~ How do you know and sense and feel that God loves you? Is it in the things He has done for you? In the people He has put in your life? Or is it because His Word tells you so? Or, if you are fully honest, do you struggle to believe that He does love you? Action ~ Write down one thing you can point to in your life that makes you KNOW, undeniably, that God loves you. If you can t think of one, pray and ask the Lord to show you one in these moments with Him today. DAY TWENTY FOUR Part 2 Summary ~ A time to see The Lord will fight for you Thoughts ~ Do you believe God fights for you? Perhaps you can point to a time when God fought for you in the past and you know it to be true. But maybe you have a situation now where you wish you could tangibly see and sense and trust that God was fighting for you. Have you seen Him fight for others? Action ~ Journal a time when you knew God was fighting for you and what happened in that experience. Specifically pray and ask God to fight for you in a current situation.

DAY TWENTY FIVE Part 2 Summary ~ A time to see...you need only be still. Exodus 14:14 Thoughts ~ When you face battles and struggles in your life when you need God to fight for you - is being still a challenge? What makes it challenging? Where is your most peaceful place to be? What can you do to minimize your distractions and allow yourself to be still? Action ~ Go to the quietist, most peaceful place you can get to today. Set the scene: Get a cup of tea, coffee whatever feels good in your hands and sit for 10, 15 minutes as long as you can. See if you can go longer today than you could at the beginning of these 40 days. Listen to music, read, meditate, breath, just sit, relax, listen, enjoy! DAY TWENTY SIX Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 Find just a moment to Reflect Thoughts ~ There is power in reflecting on our past - our actions and our words, our situations and our thoughts. It is often in reflecting that we are able to grow in our hearts and learn from what we have done well - and from what we have not - so that we might continue to become more like Christ. But there is also great power in reflecting on who God is and what He has done in our lives...so that we are also able to grow in our hearts, learn to trust Him more, and become more like Him. Whether you feel stuck in your winter or if you feel your spring starting to bloom, in reflecting on the past 25 days, has God spoken to you? Action ~ If the answer is yes, write down one way in which you see how God has spoken to you - either in your time with Him, through His word, through a conversation with a friend - and what He has emphasized to your heart. If the answer feels like no, take a few minutes and list one way you could perhaps see - in retrospect - how He was trying to reach your heart. Then, write a prayer to the Lord and share with Him your heart and thoughts as you reflect on these past 25 days.

DAY TWENTY SEVEN Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 to sense His presence in your life Thoughts ~ Sometimes the obviousness of God s presence is overwhelming. Through situations or in worship or in our hearts, the Lord s hand is so clearly evident, we are both in awe of His goodness and grateful beyond measure. Still, at other times, we find it so hard to know where He is that - even despite our faith - we struggle to sense His love and to trust Him. No matter where you are on this spectrum, may this prayer be yours today. Action ~ Our Lord in Heaven, in these remaining two weeks of Lent, we ask you to make your presence known in a new way! We ask you to supernaturally speak to our hearts and our souls...so that we can know you more and so that we can trust you more. And as we sense your presence, please show us how you want us to grow, how you want to use us for your glory, and where you long to do a new thing in our lives. We ask this in the name of your Son, Jesus. Amen. DAY TWENTY EIGHT Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21...and to begin to feel the restoration strength of winter Thoughts ~ As these days have passed, it is our prayer that you are experiencing the restoration strength of winter through God s presence in your life. Action ~ Wherever you are in your season or in your healing, read these Scripture verses below, and write 1-2 sentences or thoughts that cross your mind as you read them. May God s presence and power in your life be revealed to you. Isaiah 61:7, Joel 2:25-26, ESV, Job 42:10, Isaiah 1:18, 2 Corinthians 5:17, Psalm 51:10,12, Romans 15:13

DAY TWENTY NINE Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 as He prepares your heart for His Spring in your life Thoughts ~ If Spring were to occur in an area of you life tomorrow, what would it look like? Would it be in your relationships? In your job? In your finances? In another area? DAY THIRTY Part 3 Summary ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 See, I am doing a new thing!... Thoughts ~ Exclamation points are not used frequently in Scripture. What does the significance of that exclamation point mean to you? If the Lord is speaking that sentence to you, what new thing is He speaking to you about? Or, what new thing would you like Him to do in your new life? Action ~ Find your quiet, cozy place, and take your Spring before the Lord. Ask Him specifically for your new thing in the space below. And then ask the Lord to help you discover other new things He would like you to do as well. Then, for 15 minutes, let your mind rest and let your heart hear from Him.

DAY THIRTY ONE Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? Thoughts ~ Have you ever wondered if God is speaking to you and you are somehow missing it? From this Scripture, it seems a safe bet that, though God was working, His people were missing what He was doing for them. So God, asks - in essence - don t you see what I am doing for you? God wants us to deeply understand His goodness and how much He loves us here and now and He wants us to understand the sacrifices He was willing to make so that we can spend eternity with Him. He wants us to know how much He cares for our every day burdens and needs. Still, we often miss it. Can you look back to a time when you missed the Lord s goodness? Can you retroactively see that He wanted you to experience a new thing but that it was hard to understand? Or are you living in that time now? Is it hard to perceive what God is doing? Is it possible He is doing a new thing? DAY THIRTY TWO Part 3 Summary ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen Action ~ As your Spring approaches, and as you pray about your new thing, reflect on the power of this verse. Google the word provide and jot down a definition below that best relates to how God provides for us. Then jot a sentence about the significance of His specifically providing water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. How does this relate to your suffering through your winter? How does the idea of His giving drink to my people, my chosen related to your spring? Jot down one sentence regarding how this verse speaks to you.

DAY THIRTY THREE Part 3 ~ A time to discover See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I provide water in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland, to give drink to my people, my chosen, the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 the people I formed for myself that they may proclaim my praise. Isaiah 43:19-21 Thoughts ~ Praise to the Lord can be given in so many ways. As God continues to work in these 40 days, in what ways can you praise Him? In times where it is easy to see the amazing ways God is working, praising Him is a natural outflow of our gratefulness to Him. But in times of barrenness, it is especially hard to praise Him, even when we know we are called to it. What does your praise look like today? Does it feel forced? Do you praise Him mostly because you are grateful what He has provided but struggle to understand your own winter? Or have you transitioned to your own private moments of solace and tears of praise to Him...praise for renewal and signs of spring...and maybe even praise for the winter? Action ~ Write down a prayer of praise to Him. If praising Him feels especially challenging today, share that with the Lord. Then, ask Him to show you how to praise Him amidst your hurt and pain. Ask Him to show you how to praise Him amidst the winter and as you trust Him for your spring. DAY THIRTY FOUR For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven And do not return there without watering the earth So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10 & 11 Let Him take the barrenness of your Winter and renew your spirit Thoughts ~ Can you feel the cold air turning to a warmer breeze? Are there ways you can sense and feel that God is turning your winter into spring? Are there any ways in which God is showing you that your season of barrenness is coming to an end? As He renews your soul and nourishes your spirit, He provides us windows of opportunity to praise Him in a new way. In His providing spring in our lives, times of quiet will blossom into joy-filled moments of praise that are not forced, not a challenge, but are - instead - a natural outflowing of our gratefulness and our trust in Him. Action ~ Ask God to continue to renew your spirit today. Ask Him to supernaturally heal what remains of your winter, and ask Him to nourish your soul as prepares you for spring.

DAY THIRTY FIVE For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven And do not return there without watering the earth So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth; It will not return to Me empty, Without accomplishing what I desire, And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it. Isaiah 55:10 & 11 let Him show you His purpose for these seasons of your life Thoughts ~ In your cozy, quiet time today, look back at yesterday s devotional. Have you transitioned into being able to ask Him to show you His purpose for the seasons? Action ~ Whether it feels natural at this stage or not, write a prayer below to the Father who loves you, praise Him, tell Him how you feel, and ask Him to reveal to you His purpose for your winters. Whether you have been or currently are in a winter, as you search for ways to praise Him even still, know that your story - the one He has written and continues to write - is, in and of itself, a gift that is unique to you and you alone.
