A Newsletter of St. Francis Episcopal Church, Goldsboro, NC November 2016 Retreat reveals C.L.U.E. of our life together At our Parish Retreat at Trinity Center, we looked into the mystery God unfolds, drawing us as a parish deeper into God s love. These ideas below are starting points from diligent work our stellar group of Franciscans did discovering, praying, pondering & exploring, work we will continue to share & explore together to discover & live into God s CLUEs for us our past, present & ideas for our future. We are wise to continue to work on these together, both the whole parish & as your Vestry will at our Vestry Retreat in January. These are ideas we have from the retreat: Calling from God for ministry together includes charity, cooperation, creativity, caring, courage. [What else do you perceive?] Living in community as God envisions includes love, laughter, liturgy, life, longevity. [What else do you perceive?] Understanding who we are as God wants us to be in our life together [a lively endeavor] includes union, unity, usefulness, unction. [What else do you perceive?] Evolving as we grow in the gift of God s love includes eternity, everlasting, equality, Eucharist, empathy, equal, endurance. [What else do you perceive?] As we did at the retreat, let s prayerfully ponder the Who, What, When, Why, Where & How of each of these because Together We Grow! Our insights into our 5Ws + 1H revealed this common characteristic: We are Adapting. In addition to this & our 5Ws + 1H below, what else do you perceive? Who: Holy Spirit; small; individuals; ministries; multi-cultural; grows What: Blessing of Animals; hospitality; acceptance; people first [not theology]. What are we like? Gray-headed; friendly; caring; energetic; family; critical point; dedication; supportive; openness; open minded; adaptive; critical mass? When & Why areas yet to explore Where [are we now] includes our reaching out; rebuilding stage; evolving; adapting; seeking; reducing; Plateaued? Stagnant? How we do ministry, reflect who we are, live our life s calling/our lives: by the grace of God; togetherness; prayer; talent; energy; compassion; agree to disagree. What & How each include our welcoming & our sense of humor. At the retreat we also looked into where we are now, what from the past is vital for the present & what are the implications for our future. From the past vital for the present: caring; nurturing; welcoming newcomers; keep & increase multi-culturalism increase ties with Hispanic congregation; spiritual & physical healing; sense of humor, patience, family; CITF; continue liturgy quality; Bible study open to all; awareness of openness; men s group; Cursillo reunion group; Hispanic work days, info at tiendas [stores] & Hispanic restaurants. Reality Check: Time limits Franciscans, I invite you to join me regularly in discerning God s call to us & how we are to grow together. One way you can do this is to pray daily this paraphrase of Philippians 1:9-10: And this is my prayer: That our love may overflow more & more with knowledge and full insight to help us determine what is best. How can you remember to pray this daily? A wise spiritual guide taught me to use time in relation to the verse: I pray this daily at 1:09 p.m. [I have my phone remind me.] I once did it at 1:09 a.m. when I was about to turn off the light & saw it was 1:08 a.m. I waited 60 seconds just for the delight of praying this in the wee hours! 2 ~ The Franciscans November 2016 ~ CHRISTMAS IN THE FOREST NOVEMBER 4 & 5! There are many different ways you can volunteer to help during CITF! Make homemade goodies to sell in the Pantry; Sign up to work different areas during CITF Nov 4 & 5; Clean up after CITF Sat., Nov 5. SIGN-UP POSTERS are in the Parish Hall. NOVEMBER 3, Thursday: DROP OFF BAKED GOODS! From 1pm 7pm bring your homemade baked goods and drop them off in the Pantry or the Café area where they will be priced and packaged if needed. HELP CHOP VEGETABLES! Join us Thursday to chop vegetables for the 2 batches of soup. For those of you working come after work. The veggies will be there by Thursday morning. If you have some spare time there will be folks there throughout the day. Come out and peel & cut carrots and celery for the tables and also for the soup. We also have a slicer for the onions and cabbage, and there are plenty of potatoes that need washed, peeled, run thru the french fry cutter, and then cubed. So come out anytime Thursday and chop. PROJECT CHRIST CHILD Each year in late November we at St. Francis get the opportunity to choose the name of one of the children in our Spanish Congrega on and buy that child a Christmas gi. This year 27 children's names will be available at our 10:30 am service on 11/20 and 11/27. (Choose a tag from the tree and be sure to sign the list with the child's name and your informa on.) We ask that you purchase an ou it suitable for school and a toy, book, or game for your Christ Child. A Christmas party will be given in the St. Francis Parish Hall at 3:45 p.m. on Sunday, December 18, 2016. Everyone is invited to a end and par cipate in the fes vi es. There will be fun for all ages. During our 50th Anniversary year, the Vestry established the St. Francis Episcopal Church Legacy Fund as an endowment to provide future generations with the resources to share the good news and respond to the needs of their time as well as to extend our personal legacies into the future. On All Saints Sunday, November 6, 2016, we will remember those who were our Founding donors in 2014 and those who have given to the St. Francis Legacy Fund by bequests in a will, giving notice of planned bequests, or gifts (some of which were made in memory of a family member or friend). These gifts have been invested by State Street Bank and are to be used for outreach ministries, scholarships, Christian formation, and youth events as well as seed money for start-up ministries. We thank you for the beautiful pewter cross which reminds us of each of you every day. We have also enjoyed going through all the recipes gathered from the St. Francis parishioners. Dave pointed out his favorites from over the years. It was very special to see the recipes from Dave s mother. We have plenty of recipes to make, especially since we will not make it to CITF to buy goodies. We miss all of you and the fellowship of our St. Francis family. It took us awhile to find a church in Ocala that could come close to our loving church in Goldsboro, but are settling in at our new church, Christ the King Anglican Church, and are meeting new friends. We will soon begin meeting with Fr. Don to prepare for our marriage and will keep you posted on our plans. After a few incidents in our new home, including only having hot water and a minor flood from a faulty dishwasher, everything is now going well. We still have a few boxes to unpack and stray pieces of furniture to place. If any of you travel this way, you are most welcome to come visit and stay with us. Love, Cindi and Dave
