CANON LAW REQUIREMENTS FOR SERVING AS A CONFIRMATION SPONSOR The introduction to the Rite of Confirmation states that each Candidate must have a Sponsor. Three functions of the sponsor: 1. To bring the candidate to receive the sacrament. 2. To present the candidate to the minister for the anointing. 3. To help the candidate after Confirmation to act as a true witness to Christ and faithfully fulfill the obligations connected with this sacrament. The New Code of Canon Law (892.2) states It is desirable that the one who undertook the role of Sponsor at Baptism be Sponsor for Confirmation. The purpose is to clearly express the relationship between Baptism and Confirmation as sacraments of initiation and to make the function and responsibility of the Sponsor more obvious. THE FOLLOWING REQUIREMENTS ARE INDICATED FOR THE SPONSORS BY THE NEW CODE OF CANON LAW (874). 1. The Sponsor should be sufficiently mature for the role. The Code requires that the Sponsor be at least sixteen years of age. 2. The Sponsor must be a practicing member of the Catholic Church and should already have received the sacraments of Christian initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist. 3. The Sponsor should be a role model in leading a Catholic life. Therefore it is required: That the sponsor be a practicing Catholic, leading a faithful sacramental life, and participating in the development of his/her parish community. If the proposed sponsor is married, the person must have been married in a Catholic ceremony or have obtained the permission of a priest before marrying in a non-catholic ceremony. The Sponsor must secure from the Pastor of his/her parish a Letter of Eligibility stating that the above requirements have been met. It is not necessary to have more than one Sponsor. The New Code also indicates that the Sponsor should be present for the ceremony. ONLY UNDER GRAVE CIRCUMSTANCES MAY A PROXY BE USED. In such an exceptional case the same qualifications listed above must apply for the proxy. PARENTS MAY NOT perform this role.
