But, despite my crazy travel schedule for work, I still managed to get in over 10 hours of flying during the last two months. In fact, just this past weekend I had yet another opportunity to demonstrate how General Aviation is still a better method for personal transportation. A good friend of mine from Omaha invited me to a Charity event that he was co-chairing. Because this event was called Wings and Wheels and located in a hangar at Eppley Airfield, he thought it only appropriate that I should attend. Because the weather was ideal and it was a great excuse to fly, I couldn t agree more. I flew out late Saturday morning and arrived in Omaha 2 hrs and 22 minutes later (within 2 minutes of what the AOPA flight planner said it would take me). The return flight on Sunday afternoon took only 2 hrs and 4 minutes. That s about 3 hrs door to door and only cost me approximately $250 in fuel round trip. Had I attempted to go commercially it would have taken 4 hrs door to door and about $350 in airfare and parking. Not including the fact that I love to fly, it was more convenient and less costly to fly my own plane than attempt to go commercially. Not Too Shabby!!! Enough about me! August was another busy month for the Chapter. In addition to attending Sloshkosh we held a Young Eagles rally on August 14 and assisted in the DeKalb Corn Fest August 20-22. The Young Eagles rally was blessed with great weather this time and we were able to fly over 40 kids. Thanks need to go out to Steve Doonan, Dan Thurnau, Marc Stancy, Jack Bennett, Joe Sener, Jim Auman, and yours truly for flying! And to Ceil May, Liz Doonan, Donna Allen, Sonya Everett, Arthur Everett, Tim Hunter, David, and Jeff Kohlert for all of their support on the ground! During Corn Fest, Our Chapter was asked to assist in marshaling and parking all the aircraft that flew in for the three day event. Thanks again to all who helped out. It was a lot of fun. September is equally busy starting with our monthly meeting (Monday 9/13) to be held at the Warbirds 1
2 of North America's hangar in Marengo. There, we will be provided an update on the restoration of a 1957 T28 Trojan. Additionally, we will be visiting a B17 restoration. Don t miss this meeting. A map and directions are located later in the newsletter. On September 19 we will be holding our annual Pancake Breakfast at Hinckley Airport. Please hold this date as we will again need all the help we can get from our membership. And finally, our neighboring Chapter up in Rockford is holding a Young Eagle rally in conjunction with the Boy Scouts Aviation Camporee on September 25. They are looking for as many pilots as they can muster up. All you pilots, please consider helping out this great cause. May you only experience strong tailwinds and I ll see you all on Monday night. 6 Pilots Wanted! Greetings, Please join the Boy Scouts of America in celebrating their 100 th birthday! This year marks a century anniversary of the best youth organization in America. In celebration, the Blackhawk Area Council of the BSA is conducting an Aviation Centered Camporee at the Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD) in Rockford IL. This event is anticipating attendance of 5000-7000 participants, both youth and adults. Helping to make this event more memorable; in conjunction Rockford EAA Chapter 22 is hosting a Young Eagles Rally on September 25 th, 2010. What an amazing way to introduce hundreds of young boys to aviation. Our goal is to provide a Young Eagles Flight Experience to over 1000 Boy Scouts. I did say more than 1000, so we are in need of 50 to 60 pilots! We have the endorsement of RFD, and the tower crew is on board to create easy access. This is where you come in; we are desperately looking for as much support as possible. I am personally asking for your support as a pilot if possible, and in helping me find additional pilots. Time will fly by and I need to get commitments in order to plan the event, so please respond to my request by phone or email as soon as you can. Again your support is greatly needed and appreciated, please help make this an exciting and memorable event, celebrate 100 years of Scouting and the EAA Young Eagle program!
