The purpose of our congregation is to worship God, who gives life through Word and Sacrament; to serve one another in love and fellowship; and to proclaim forgiveness and salvation to all through Jesus Christ alone. Before Worship As you prepare to worship your Lord this evening, spend a few quiet minutes in prayer before the service. Review the lessons, the service notes, and pray this prayer: Prayer of the Day Stir up Your power, O Lord, and come. Protect us by Your strength and save us from the threatening dangers of our sins; for You live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen. For the Children A Cry-Room is NOT available at this time. Facilities Restrooms are located down the hall and on the right side. 2
Advent Vespers The Three Offices of Jesus Prophet The Confession of Sin P: Dearly beloved! We have come together in the presence of God our heavenly Father, to render thanks for the great benefits that we have received at His hand, to set forth His most worthy praise, to hear His holy Word, and to ask for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things that are necessary for our life and salvation. O come, let us worship Him! Let us kneel and bow down before Him. Let us confess our sins with penitent hearts, and obtain forgiveness by His infinite grace and mercy. C: Almighty and most merciful Father, we have strayed from Your ways like lost sheep. We have followed the devices and desires of our hearts. We have offended against Your holy law. We have done those things which we should not have done, and we have not done those things which we should have done. Have mercy on us, O Lord! Spare us and restore us, according to the promises You have declared to us in Jesus Christ, our Lord. For His sake grant that we may live a godly, righteous, and sober life, to the glory of Your holy name. P: The almighty and merciful Lord has granted us pardon and forgiveness of all our sins, grace for true repentance and amendment of life, and the comfort of the Holy Spirit. Amen. Duet, Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus Arr. Larson (words from ELH 87) The Versicles P: O Lord, open my lips. 3
P: Make haste, O God, to deliver me. 4
The Psalmody Psalm 119:41-49 P: So let your mercies come to me, O Lord, C: and let your salvation come according to your sayings. P: Then I will give an answer to those who insult me, C: because I trust in your words. P: But do not tear away the word of truth from my mouth, C: because I wait confidently for your judgments. P: Then I will continually keep your law C: forever and ever. P: Then I will walk around freely, C: because I have sought your precepts. P: Then I will speak of your testimonies before kings, C: and I will not be put to shame. P: For I delight in your commandments, C: which I love. P: I lift up my hands to your commandments, C: which I love, and I meditate on your statutes. P: Remember your word to your servant, C: because you have given me hope. All: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning is now, and ever shall be, forever more. Amen. The Old Testament Lesson Deuteronomy 18:15-19 15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among you, from your brother Israelites. Listen to him. 16 That is exactly what you asked from the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly. You said, Do not let me hear the voice of the LORD my God anymore, and do not let me see this great fire again, or I will die. 17 Then the LORD said to me, They have done well by saying what they said. 18 I will raise up a prophet for them from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he will speak to them everything that I command him. 5
19 Anyone who will not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. The Gospel Luke 4:14-21 14 Jesus returned to Galilee in the power of the Spirit, and news about him spread through all the surrounding area. 15 He was teaching in their synagogues and being honored by everyone. 16 He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. As was his custom, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day and stood up to read. 17 The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written: 18 The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set free those who are oppressed, 19 and to proclaim the year of the Lord s favor. 20 He rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant, and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 He began to tell them, Today, this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing. A Responsory P: O Lord, have mercy upon us. The Sermon Hymn: #165:1-4, Let the Earth Now Praise the Lord The Sermon Acts 3:18-26 The Three Offices of Jesus Prophet 18 But in this way God fulfilled what he had foretold through the mouth of all the prophets: that his Christ would suffer. 19 Therefore repent and return to have your sins 6
wiped out, 20 so that refreshing times may come from the presence of the Lord and that he may send Jesus, the Christ appointed for you. 21 He must receive heaven until the times when everything will be restored, as God spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets long ago. 22 Moses said to the fathers: The Lord your God will raise up for you a Prophet from your brothers who is like me. Listen to everything he tells you. 23 And this is what will happen: Every person who does not listen to that Prophet will be completely cut off from the people. 24 Also, all the prophets from Samuel on, as many as have spoken, have talked about these days. 25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with our fathers when he said to Abraham: In your seed all the families of the earth will be blessed. 26 God raised up his Servant and sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you away from your wicked ways.
