The Teachers Conventon Frday, Nov. 30 was the day on whch the weather man who had been frownng and unplcatanl rtll the weok to the people of Hanale, began to smle, n" the welcome of tho teachers who flocked from all parts of the sland for ther annuhl meetng. The conventon was called to order by Presdent E. A. Knudscn and opened wth a, rousng Star Spangled Banner" The report of secretary Mss Blanche Martn, gave an account of tho meetng hold January,26. 1917 at Wamea and that of tho treasurer, Mss Etta Lee showed the "astoundng" surplus of over seventy dollars n the treasury. By a unanmous vote tho offcers of the precedng year were wth the excepton of the treasurer, Mss Lee resgnng n favor of Mss Chrstopherson. The program commttee for the next year was announced as follows: Mss Hundley, charman; Mr, Wm. McCluskey, Mr. H.. Bro-d- e, Mr. John Bush, Mrs. Josephne Chamberlan. Address of Welcome The address of welcome was gven by Mr. A. Menefoglo, supervsor, county of Kaua. On begnnng " nover can manage to say very much" ho was greeted, wth a protestng exploson- of laughter by those who knowt well the genal joker of Hanale, He proved hmself a good example of a loyal Amercan of foregn brth sayng "The Hag of Amerca cannot bo trmmed to ft anyones back, we are or are not Amercan." Red Cross Work The Lhue Auxlary of the Amercan Red Cross was represented by Mrs. Chas. Rce and the Western Kaua.unt by Mrs. E. A. Knud-- J sen. Mrs. Rce gave a few valuable suggestons as to ways n whch thu schools and school chldren can help n the great work. K"nttng classes for the grls have been begun n Lhue and the number of kntters can be greatly ncreased ; chldren may snp scraps of cloth nto fllngs for hosptal pllows whch are so much needed. t s a sgnfcant fact that the monthly shpmonts of materals from ths auxlary have been averagng fve hundred dollars n value and the ncrease of work demands more money to furnsh materals. All contrbutons wero asked to bo sent n as soon as possble. Mrs. Knudscn sketched the hstory of tho Red Cross, begnnng wth ts foundngs a t Geneva, through ts varous stages of usefulness to ts present day status of a membershp well up n the mllons. An amusng ncdent avos related of a man 1n who mssed hs dress sut and found from hs wfe that t had gono to tho led CroH. He consoled hmself wth tho thought that Prnce Albert mght get more use of t, than he. A pleasng pcture was drawn of the frendshp and coopcaton shown n the groups whch are workng together each weok. A very enjoyable muscal number was rendered by tho competent Hawaan sexletto from among the Koloa teachers, Mrs. Aka. Mrs. Blake, Msses Kahe, Kalawe, V-dnand Mr. Lovoll They wero encorqd and later called upon agan. Mrs. Henry Sholdon also sang a solo wthout accomnanment whch s dlcult o accomplshment and was well accomplshed. Garden Hnts A talk by Mr Lesle Clark gave valuable suggestons to would-b- e gardncrs, many of whch wll be of great beneft f carred out n the school gardens. Hs advce was to avod turnng up the sub-fo- l whch s found from four to twelve nches beneath the surface clay, to prepare a good tlth by not dggng when too wet and thus to avod "puddlng"; to plant corn n square patches to nsuro bettor pollnaton by the wnd and to avod deep cultvaton when- - the roots are well developed. Ho emphaszed the mportance of the rotaton of crops, usng less mneral fertlzer and savng weeds to make compost heaps, ths beng almost as valuable as the use of stable manure. Sweet potntr slps planted at the mddle nstead of the ends wll produce more and rounder and less fbrous potatoes. Patrotc Address Tho. guest of honor was Judge James J Banks of Alabama who strred tho souls of each ono of hs audence, as hs own was strred, by a patrotc address whch wll be publshed later n these est columns attenton to tho problems nvolved,; and another two hours and a Luau Lunch half of mltary drll n the afternoon wth two hours of study n the The meetng was adjourned for two hours durng whch a genune evenng. good luau was served n tho beautfully decorated o 1 d Hawaan ed by the men throughtout, no ohe The very best sprt was dsplay church adjonng the school.. Mr. Carver. Ho dwelt mostly upon the nterestng trad tons o f Moorsh Portugal and panted a. glowng pcture of a tcachcrss paradse n Brazl, whero the teacher has a house and two servants furnshed, a n average salary of $150 per month and upon retrng after nne years of servce, gets half salary for the rest of hs lfe; after twelve years, two-throf salary and after eghteen years, the total salary whch s sent regularly whthersoever he lsteth. The Mllon of the Hgh School Mr. Wn. McCluskey addressed the conventon on "What tho Hgh School Should Mean to Us." Ho crtczed the crtcsm whch has called the hgh school the "fourth dmenson," meanng that t deals wth thngs whch have nothng to do wth lfe. Tho elementary perod of educaton, whch s at present too long " should be desgned to ntroduce the young mnd to tho world of thngs; the secondary to the socal usages of these thngs." Phlp Rce, home for a few days on a bref furlough, ntervewed bv the Garden sland, gave substantally the followng account of the lfe and aelvtes at the Offcers Tranng Camp at Seho-fel- d. was there for three months and t was, as you say, a very strenuous and eventful throe months. There wero one hundred of us, and weo-cup- ed one large two story buldng, the upper story of whch was gven over to the dormtory; the lower to ktchen, dnng room, store rooms, offces, etc. Every day was flled to overflowng wth a round r f unbroken actvty. Tho frst call was at o: 15 a. m, roll call at 5:30. Breakfast at G. Clean up at 0:30, and so on all through the long day tll 9 oclock at nght, when "lghts out" was the most welcome sound that could fall on human ears The days actvtes wero pretty severe, oven for those of us who were farly well used to athletcs and an actve lfe,so you can magne what t was for those who had led a sedentary lfe n offces or stores. These actvtes ncluded a settng up drll of one and a half to two hours, three hours or so of mltary drll and manual at arms n the forenoon, Avhch ncluded the sharp- us mghtly. The Commssarat was allrght; the fare was good smple, but wholesome, and well cooked. Of course workng lke that, you know a man can cat almost anythng, but guess t was good anyhow. One of tho strange thngs was the nordnate desre for candy nothng went to tho rght spot qute as well as a pound of candy home made candy, m partcular. We were allowed, by way of wages durng ths tranng perod, S100 a month. As Commssoned offcers wo wll get 81-1- moro, for a Second Leutenant, and $1(50 for Frst Leutenant. n regard to tho Trenches: Well they were supposed to he as closely as possble an exact dupl cate of thoso to be found n the war zones at tho Front. They were 7 ft deep and just wde enough to get along n, pass the supples etc. And me had to dg them, andsomo of t was mgh ty hard dggng. At frst tho effort was made to keep tho men dggng contnuou- - ly, but they soon found that more headway was mado by dong t n relays of 15 mnutes each. Very few people who havent tred t know how hard pck and shovel work jean be, especally for a steady det day after day. The frst day or two were smply kllng but after that we got down to a bearng and t went allrght. Of course you understand that t s no fun to ptch the drt out of a narrow grave 7 ft. deep, oven f you do know how to do t. The Trenches were arranged as, n tho war zones, wth a front tme, and back lne and wth connectng short trenches. n collecton wth back ln8 wero the supply quarters, tho commssarat. tho relay quarters etc. these behg caves or chambers Change n Organzaton of Local Red Cross Mrs. 0. A. Rce has just receved notfcaton of the transfer of nc. slands of Mau and Kaua to the jursdcton ol the chapter. Ths s n the nterest of unformty ond effcency and means, that henceforth reports, membershps, funds and fnshed work wll bo sent to nstead of h Washngton. v. j The sland of Kaua, workng together as a whole, wll now consttute an auxlary consstng of varous unts mado up n the dfferent dstrcts. t. Murder at Kapaa Mauha On Frday nght a Korean was murdered n a contractors camp n the mountans mauka of Knnan.. the murderer beng a Japanese. Some dspute s sad to have been the causp. The man has been apprehended and hs case s to come up today at Kapaa. A coroners n- - quest over the body was 1eld on Saturday, leavpg no doubt about the man havng come to death n a" foul manner. 0... Postoffce for Kapaa 0 The next step n Jho advancement of the thrvng lttle pllage of Kapaa wll probably bo the establshng of a postoffce., When Postmaster D.. Mae- - Adam was on Kaua, wth the Congressonal party, he was approached on the subject of a postotlce for Kapaa. Ho sad he was hghly n, fayor of t and f the necessary number of sgnatures were placed n hs hands he would see that the was establshed. Thanksgvng Servces offce LhucTJnon Church held the us- - ual Thanksgvng Servce Thursday mornng whch was well attended. Specal musc ncluded an anthem by the tho chor; and specal decora tons conssted of a generous dsplay of tho fruts and vegetables grown on the slond. The Sermon emphaszed the mportance of realzng our benefts n order that we may apprecate them " and be grateful for them. A specal collecton for the Red Cross amounted $35. Marred Wllam Gunderson of McBrydc was marred to Rose Souza on Saturday evenng at the Wamea Catholc Church by Father Herman., Jula G undersol was brdesmad and Manuel Fernandez was groomsman. A very fne recepton luau followed at tho Gunderson home at Wa-hawhch was partcpated n by a large number of guests. Here we had to lve for days at a tme, and all tho actvtes of lft had to be carred on just as n tho European Trenches, and nl tho Snntary provsons had to be mado just as though t wero for an extended occupaton. t was a very unque experence. Then came the day when all the battle statons had to lx arranged Wrath specally asked that mght be allowed to go wth the Ambulance, after had begged hm to allow me to stand by them n foul weather. The General agreed and sad he would be glad to have one Chaplan rght up n case of emergency. worked out a complete scheme for all emergences and sub mtted t to the Dvson. t was prnted verbatm as a Dvsonal oder the same afternoon. Well we all got nto poston. Wrath and had a hole n the sde of a bank and made t splnter proof wth three layers of sand-bag- s. You remember sayng that you felt about ten days ago that somethng unusual was gong on. t was! We were hurlng tons of shells on to the German lnes and they were replyng. We were very buy. Then one mornng the boys went over wth the bayonet and shell was let loose. Every gun the Germans could fnd was fred at full speed. Shells burst everywhere. t was nothng lke a battlefeld one reads about. Altogether the ground we were, nterested n ours and the enemy s was not twos.uarenules.l and over a thousand guns were hurlng shells on to that small! space hour after hour untl there was hardly a space of ten yards wthout a shell hole. The Saturday departure from Nwlwl has for long vears heen. n a sense, n weekly soeal event, where people from all over the sland met and exchanged the courteses of lfe, and kept more or less n touch wth pne another and, always vaguely, vet nevtably, as the guests n a way of the Lhue people. They were t. Ths gave Lhue more or less of a soeal prstge, and more or less of an advantage. n a measurable degree ths advantage wll le lessened hy the transfer to Fort Allen, and we somewhat queston whether ths full prmacy of Lhue wll be restored by any contngency short of the realzaton of the Nawlwl deep-se- a harbor plans.. We do not Tesent or begrudge the ttmporary change. t s a consderaton and an accommodaton whch are due to the Wamea sde of the sland, and we trust that t may prove entrely statsfaetory and be long contnued. So far ns any loss to Lhue s concerned we would assure our frends of the other sde of the sland that we rejoce wth them that our small loss s ther great gan. Food Reports The food conservaton weekly reports nsttuted throughout our sland communtes a few weeks ago are exertng n very salutary nfluence already. Some leftover, that under ordnary crcumstances would have gone nto the garbage can, s carefully saved n order that a clear record may be possble at the end of the week. Even the chldren take an nterest n these report cards and are ready to help make them as nealy deal as possble by cuttng out waste or reducng on wheat or meat. We dont know just what use may be made of these, card reports n Washngton, whther the results are transmtted, but at any rate they have a very consderable use here n stmulatng economy, patrotsm and humanty. THE GARDEN SLAND TUESDAY, DEC. 4, 1917 FOOD CONTROL 111 GREAT BRTAN A Food Conservaton Bulletn, No. 365 gves an nterestng outlne of the food control system adopted by Great Brtan: t s a cross between that adopted by Germany, a strct raton ng of the consumer to a lmted and enforced raton, and that of the Unted States whch requests. a voluntary cooperaton on.n ueu;u of the producer, the.mddleman, and the consumer.. n Great Brtn the country s dvved nto sxteen food dvsons, each of whch s under a commssoner who s asssted bv local commttees. Local tradesmen are regstered wth these local commttees and f they do not comply wth the regulatons tley are strcken off the lst and compelled to go out of busness, flagrant nfracton of the ordnances ssued expose the delnquent to fne or mprsonment or both, and there s no hestaton about executng the law. Whle general publc ratonng has not been adopted as vet, nevertheless publc eatng places are practcally lmted n ther supply so that they cannot serve more than a lmted amount wth each meal. After Dec. 30, only half a pound of sugar wll be allowed for each person whch wll be obtanable by means of an order card, good for that person only. War-An- d Thanksgvng There s a curous rony n thanksgvng festvtes whle a naton s at war; n almost every home there wll be at least one empty char but t s perhaps just ths stuaton whch wll draw more closely together the tes of famly affecton. Commentng on ths condton, a wrter n the November ssue of Good Housekeepng says: "Let us try, frst of all, to collect a. bg famly. Fnd someone who would otherwse have to st down to some lonely table. Economze we must n every way concevable. t s possble, however, to plan and excuteour menu wth such runnng art that the economes wll never be suspected." Here s a suggeston: Uxbrdjre. "The ths year should be festve, but not ornate. The day should be one of real Thanksgvng even for the mother who prepares and serves the dnner herself. Thanksgvng would not be Thanksgvng wthout a chcken or turkey or wthout cranberres n some lorm. Potatoes tand other vegetables there should be. Corn-me- al bread s suggested as a remnder of our countrys need to save wheat. Mnce pe s omtted because that means unnecessary use of meat. HEBARD CASE Offce of the County Agent at Kaua (Taper presented to the Wamea Lterary Club.) The slogan of the Food Admnstraton whch has been used snce the begnnng ot ths work and to whch we wll march to vctory s, "Food wll wn the war dont waste t." To stop wastng food s, of course, a cardnal pont n food conservaton. t s Conservaton. But to nsst on that strongly, as strongly as we ore gong to have to nsst upon t before sthe necessty for t s drven home, ar.d not offset by the counter balancng fact that there s somethng whch we can eat nstead of that whch we save, and the dsagreeable mpresson s created n the mnds of the people that they "are beng asked to half-rato- n themselves whle we are carryng on ths great war aganst Prussausm. Ths mpresson has already been created, to some ex tent. To correct ths msconcep ton, to tell the story of the part food plays n war; how bread and bullets wll put down autocracy and make the world safe for democracy; how we must conserve our food sup; lv n order that a share and an ungrudgng share, mav for our alles, s, f not the nost mportant, at least the mmedate and frst task of the Food Admnstraton or any other such body. From ths mportant task s brought to lght a new slogan whch wll answer the needs of the Admnstraton and create no such reelng or tear n the mnds of the people, that, "Eat ar.d wn the War." One of the frst thngs to be done s to remove from the mnds the fear that ths countrv s enterng a campagn of starvaton. We are gong to send great quanttes of food abroad, n order that our alles may keep on fghtng and wn the war, fof us as well as themselves. The more we send, the further we wll keep the frst lne trenches from our shores We wll send food, then, send t abundantly, but that does not mean that the Amercan people are gong hungry. t does not mean that they are gong to eat less than thev have been accus tomed to: they may n fa t, cat more. The tme may coue, possbly should the war contnue for years, when they wll have to eat less, but for the present all they are asked to do s to use spar ug ly the foods that can be convenently exported to our alles. Thev are some thngs, pershable stuff and bulky fcods, whch can not so wll be shpped abroad. They are wholesome foods of whch the Amercan people for ther healths sake ought to tat more, cornbread. rye, potatoes and home products of whch all are good. So that, all we ask so people s to change ther habts a lttle, to crt all thcv want of any number of foods wholesome and pleasng to the taste, but to cut dojvn ther consumpton of certan thngs of whch our alles stand n cryng need, we are actually counsellng the people, when we ask them to save, to do somethng whch s good for them. Food conservaton s not gong to be a hardshp to us, f we look at t n the rght way. At most t wll mean the substtuton of one thng or gnother, The man who eats less whet bread and more corn bread mav fnd, as thousands have found, tha they lke corn bread better. Be wllng to try new foods. Conservaton s not even gong to mean that we are to be unduly lmted n our choce of dshes. Thnk of a chart. On ths sde are the thngs of whch we can eat more, on the other sde those we ought to eat more sparngly, Vou wll see that the cat more out balances heavly the eat less. On the Food Admnstraton Home Card there are onlv sx artcles whch Hoover has asked the housewfe to save, vz: Save the wheat. THE GARDEN SLAND TUESDAY. DEC. 4, 1917. ;avp. the meat, save the mlk, save the sugar, save the fuel, n addton the housewfe s asked to buy home produce and use pershable foods n greater quantty. Another mpresson that must be removed s the wrong dea some persons have that ths whole movement s to cut down the Rrocery blls of the Amercan people. As one woman was heard to say, ts a lovely plan. We eat less am save our money so that we can send t to Europe." What the solders who are bangng at the Germans want s Food, not money, and food s what we are gong to send them. Thrft Wll undoubtedly be a by product of conservaton a r d theren wll le another beneft to us as a naton, but mschef wll be worked f the" mpresson becomes general that thrft s the ultmate object. That would leave unconsumed geat quanttes of foodstuffs whch cannot be very well shpped abroad, and whch, f we do not eat, wll beneft no one. That n turn, would have a bad effect upon future producton. What we want to do what we must do -- and what we wll do s to nduce farmers to put forth every effort to produce, produce, produce. They must not be ds couraged bv foolsh economy that would have the effect of over-pr- o ducton, and lead nevtably to n actvty cr retrenchment on ther part. Furthermore the lesson must be drven home that the duty of con servaton rests upon everyone. John must save as well as James The banker as well as the laborer n the felds. The husband as well as the wfe. The communty as well as the entle naton. Women have been preached at about starvng the garbage can untl every women must be weajy- - of the very name of conservaton. One would suppose that the whole duty of feedng the alles rested on ther slender shoulders. One woman asked, what good t dd for her to skmp the dnner table when her nusband burned up all she saved n hs cgars. We wll soon get after Mr. Husband. Every one n the famly te must wth the housewfe. One more lesson the Amercan people ought to learn the purpose n establshng the Food Admnstraton and Commsson was not, prmarly, to reduce the hgh S BUY REX n cost of lvng. t wll, bv thrott lng speculaton a n d artfcal shortages,, undoubtedly tend n that drecton; and for that, so much the better. But the great object of food conservaton s to wn the war. That fact ought to be dnned nto our ears untl we cannot possbly forget t or ms understand t. Let me repeat that the wholt object of ths move ment s to wn. the war. Look at the matter n the lght and vou wll see that prce, mportant as t s, dstressng as s hgh cost of lvng, especally to the poor, s of relatvely lttle moment besde the necessty of wnnng ths fght. We can put up wth hgh prces for a whle, f necessary, but we dont want to put up wth the Prussans, And that s what we shall have to do unless we subdue them. To subdue them each patrotc Amercan must do hs part, ether n the trenches or at home. Regard t as a prvlege to partcpate n such a patrotc movement n vour home. The natons task s a serous one. t touches each of us, you and me. f we do not wn ths war, we must prepare ourselves for grave changes n our nsttutons and to lead a dfferent lfe from that whch we planned to lve from that whcn our forefathers ded to gve us the rght to Hve. We shall ndefntely face the nterference of the Prussan autocracy or bear permanently the ntolerable burdens of mltarsm To wn ths war. we must have men. money and food. Our solders n the feld have always done ther part, our farmers and housewves wll do thers. We ae at war wth Germany becanse Germany took the ntatve and frst made war upon us, sank our shps. Rlled our ctzen, and plotted aganst us whle professng frendshp. We were patent tll the offenses became so flagrant and nsults so ntolerable that t was merelv a queston whether we would admt that we were no longer a free Naton or accept the challenge of the war-mad- e hypocrtcal, and medaeval Prussan mltarsts. There was one choce we would not make we were ncapable of makng. We could not choose "the path of submssou and suffer the most sacred rghts of our Naton ar.d our people to be gnored and volated.".
