The readings today are replete with struggle and turmoil. Jeremiah is taken by a group of disgruntled princes and thrown into a cistern to die. But a court official intercedes on his behalf to the King, who relents and rescues him from death. So too, St. Paul reminds listeners of hardships and suffering ahead. But if we are conformed to Christ s example on the cross, then we too know that there is glory in despising shame, enduring suffering, and keeping heart. Jesus words today are also quite stern. He has come to set the earth on fire and to bring division amongst us. Why? Because there are times when division must come: separating wheat from chaff, sheep from bulls, weeds from harvest. As our summer days come to a close, let us put aside what is proper to that season and prepare ourselves for what is to come. Vacation will end. Work will begin. School will be start. What is it that we must keep as our steadfast goal? What will give us heart and bring us ever closer to the Father?
