Overbrook Presbyterian Church Worship Service Twelfth Sunday after Pentecost August 12, 2018 10:30 a.m.

Please enter the sanctuary in a spirit of reverence as we prepare for worship and remember to silence all cell phones before the service. =Stand as you are able. GATHERING IN PRELUDE Improvisation: Variations on Lasst uns erfreuen CWG CALL TO WORSHIP-(based on Psalm 34:1-3) Leader: I will bless the Lord at all times; God s praise shall be in my mouth. People: We share God s blessings with one another! Leader: My soul makes its boast in the Lord; let the humble hear and be glad. People: We share God s blessings with one another! Leader: O magnify the Lord with me, and let us exalt God s name together. People: We praise God and share God s blessings with one another! HYMN No. 15 GREETING All Creatures of Our God and King LASST UNS ERFREUEN Lainie Blodgett PRAYER OF CONFESSION- (UNISON) God, forgive us. Our communion is not always visible to the world. Sometimes we allow threats to unity to enter the church, making it hard to see that we are your community. We act as though we do not need each other. We do not always love one another. We do not know and bear one another s burdens. We fail to build each other up. We do not always give ourselves willingly and joyfully to one another. Forgive us, and strengthen us so that we may live in the unity that you grant us. SILENT CONFESSION ASSURANCE OF PARDON- (Barbara Hedges-Goettl. Used with permission.) Leader: By Christ s work, we are reconciled and united with God and with one another. Thanks be to God for the Good News! People: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven. Amen. GOSPEL LESSON John 11:32-44 Page 99/pew Bible The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. SERMON Unbind Each Other The Rev. Dr. Beth Shalom Hessel HYMN No. 308 O God in Whom All Life Begins NOEL AFFIRMATION OF FAITH- (excerpts from A Brief Statement of Faith) In life and in death we belong to God. Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit, we trust in the one triune God, the Holy One of Israel, whom alone we worship and serve. We trust in God the Holy Spirit everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the Church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God s new heaven and new earth, praying, Come, Lord Jesus! With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.
