THE GOSPEL OF LUKE JESUS CHRIST THE SON OF MAN LUKE CHAPTER 6:27-36 TAPE NUMBER SMX601 JUNE 25, 2006 THE TITLE OF THE MESSAGE: "Our New Way of Life" the humanity and divinity of Jesus Christ, the son of god, and the son of man 1 SUBJECT TOPICALLY REFERENCED UNDER: Attitude, Love, Enemies, Christian Action Introduction to the Text; Luke 6:26-27 Statement of Textual Summation and Theme Jesus Came Offering what No One Ever Did Before, and what no one today ever could A New Life! John 3:3 You Must be born again 2Corinrhians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new. Revelation 21:5 Behold, I make all things new. Luke 6:27-36 But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, :28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. :29 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. :30 Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. :31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. :32 But if you love those who love you, what credit

is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. :33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. :34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. :35 But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil. :36 Therefore be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. 2 1.) It's powered by Divine love v.27-28 But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, :28 bless those who curse you, and pray for those who spitefully use you. But I say to you who hear: Immediately Two Things Here Get Our Attention. #1 - I SAY TO YOU & # - 2 YOU WHO HEAR It's powered by divine love I'm Impressed with what Jesus Didn t Say; He Never Said, Thus Sayeth the Lord - why not? He was the Lord, and We had Better Listen - it's for our own good! 1a.) It doesn t look like this world s love Verse 27a But I say to you who hear: Love your enemies, This is The Law of the Heart in the Kingdom of God. A growing, developing, maturing Christian is always in awe of what God is doing in his or her life.

One of The Greatest Powers at Work in Us Is the Power of God's Love That Has Been Sewn Into Our Hearts. But I say to you who hear: THE BIG FAT GREEK DEFINITION: you who "give audience" / you who "bend the ear" to hear me Love your enemies, GREEK DEFINITION: ajgapa w agapao, ag-ap-ah -o; The divine love of God, to love at His level, to love with a Perfect love. We Can, By the Power of the Holy Spirit in Our Lives, Overwhelm Those We Meet - IF we let God be Lord in Our lives It's powered by divine love Jesus' Desire is That the World Might Know "The Love of God" 1b.) It doesn t act like this worlds love Verse 27b-28a 3 Do good to those who hate you, :28 bless those who curse you, as Christians we know what s best for them, they don t! Do good to those who hate you, pray for them and show them God's love - without compromise :28 Bless those who curse you, "Is there any thing I can do for you, how can I serve you?" God's Love Suffers Long - 1 Cor.13:4

It's powered by divine love 1c.) It doesn t feel like this worlds love Verse 28b And pray for those who spitefully use you. Spitefully use GREEK DEFINITION: ejphrea zw epereazo, ep-ay-reh-ad -zo Slander you to their advantage, to lower you, to elevate themselves, to make you look bad, and themselves better, to tear down (( it sounds like I am describing a politician during a campaign )) Is There Anyone Like That in Your Life Today? Good - This is a Great Witnessing Opportunity 1Timothy 6:13 I urge you in the sight of God who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus who witnessed the good confession before Pontius Pilate, What was Pilate s response? - "I find no fault in him" 2.) It's controlled by Divine grace v.29-31 It's controlled by Divine grace 2a.) Grace that transcends this world 4 Verse 29a To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. Verse 29a

5 To him who strikes you on the one cheek, offer the other also. This Does Not Mean - You don t Defend Yourself Against an Attacker. This is our Response to being Persecuted for Being Christians Luke 22:64 And having blindfolded Him, they struck Him on the face and asked Him, saying, Prophesy! Who is the one who struck You? Jesus Could Have Just Thought a Thought of Retaliation = and zap! Verse 29b And from him who takes away your cloak, do not withhold your tunic either. The Cloak was an Outer Garment - used mainly in the winter months. The Tunic was more Like a Light Jacket to us. If Someone Steals the Outer Cloak, Then Will also Need a Tunic, Give Him Both. This World will Not Do That Everything We Own Can Become a Witnessing Tool. It Depends on How we use it. It's controlled by Divine grace 2b.) Grace that lavishes others Verse 30 The World will Wonder at Our "Jesus Conduct" Our W.W.J.D - that s what Jesus did Give to everyone who asks of you. And from him who takes away your goods do not ask them back. The world will never know about God's grace unless they see it on display. On display in and through our lives.

The Christian is to be Generous, The word here means that the Christian is to "extravagant toward others" "Productive toward others" "abounding toward others" "Exaggerated toward others" = profuse! This is Not the Doctrine of Passivity God nor the Christian is to reward evil conduct or sinful behavior Give to everyone who asks of you. Why Should We? Because that is exactly how Jesus has been toward you and I - that s why so there! Romans 5:6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. It's controlled by God's grace 2c.) Grace that expects nothing in return 6 Verse 31 And just as you want men to do to you, you also do to them likewise. We have come to take this statement for granted. In Jesus' day there were similar sayings, but all in the negative. "If you don t want to get slapped, then don t slap anybody = Negative" This is not a "Bible Karma" verse

Jesus Turned it Around and Made It Impossible, You go out there and change the world, one person at a time by being loving toward them. = the offensive, in the positive! "As you want" is what would be right for you and for them. You do that thing to them regardless of their response or reaction toward you. "Like Forgiveness" The Power of "Forgiveness" is in the Hand of the One doing the "Forgiving" When We Forgive Someone, We Are The One Set Free I Want to Forgive Someone Who Has Sinned Against Me so I can be freed from the situation. I Want to Issue Forgiveness Toward Others so that my fellowship with God is not hindered. I Must and I Will Forgive You Because my Relationship with Jesus is More Important than Anything Else. When You Harbor Unforgiveness, You're Doing Nothing but Destroying Your Walk with God and You're Allowing that Person to Control you. Matthew 18:15-18 Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. :16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. :17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. :18 Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Matthew 6:14 For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. Matthew 18:21-22 Then Peter came to Him and said, Lord, how often shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? Up to seven times? :22 Jesus said to him, I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven. 7

Peter was Thinking, "How big of me, I'll forgive the guy 7 times' Jesus said no way, why limit your relationship with Pete, forgive people always so that your walk with God remains healthy and fruitful. 3.) It's motivated by Divine reason v.32-34 It's motivated by Divine reason 3a.) Reason - God shows love toward all, we've enjoyed it Verse 32 Verse 32a But if you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. Because the Sinner is Self-Centric, Me-Situated, I-Focused they will "love you" for what they can get "from you" It's Been Said That "Love is Blind" and in a Sense "God's Love is Blind" He puts up with sin and evil and unbelief - for a time Luke 23:33-34 And when they had come to the place called Calvary, there they crucified Him, and the criminals, one on the right hand and the other on the left. :34 Then Jesus said, Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they do. Was Jesus asking God to excuse their sin? - No, he asked his father to extend mercy toward them It's motivated by Divine reason 8

3b.) Reason - God gives good things, we've received it Verse 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit (benefit) is that to you? For even sinners do the same. GREEK DEFINITION: ajgaqopoie w agathopoieo, ag-ath-op-oy-eh -o; to be a well-doer. To do as a favor. Romans 2:4 Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? Matthew 5:43-44 You have heard that it was said, You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy. :44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, Because At This Hour, God is Being Good to Evil People Too Matthew 5:45 That you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. He's Good to Wicked People Also - aren t we glad? A Dumb Question is: "Why do Bad Things Happen to Good People?" A Smart Question is: Why Does Anything Good Happen to Anyone at All? Answer = God! Acts 14:17 For God has not left Himself without this witness, that He did good, gave us rain from heaven and fruitful seasons, He has filled our hearts with food and gladness. Verse 33b 9

It's motivated by Divine reason For even sinners do the same.. because why? They Do It with Hope's of Getting Something in Return 3c.) Reason - God owns everything, we've borrowed it Verse 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive back, what credit is that to you? For even sinners lend to sinners to receive as much back. You'll Hear "You Owe Me" You'll Hear That There are "Strings Attached" You'll Hear that It's "Pay Back Time" "There's an Interest Rate Involved" Jesus Says "No" Lend Not Expecting Anything Back - God will Reward You Let Me Say This: If you have borrowed, you are command by God to pay it back fully. A Christian who does not pay back what was loaned, will suffer in this life. 4.) It's satisfied by Divine mercy v.35-36 Like a Grand Crescendo, Jesus Announces What The Christian's New Way of Life Really Is Like It's satisfied by Divine mercy Love em / Be Good to em / Give to em 4a.) God's mercy produces love 10

Verse 35a But love your enemies, do good, and lend, hoping for nothing in return; love them because - God Loved Me be good to them because - God's Been Good to Me loan to them because - God Has Loaned to Me But Pastor Jack; Why Should I Love em? Because you were once an enemy of God's and He loved you. But love your enemies, do good, and lend But They Don t Deserve My Love, But W.W.J.D.? James 5:20 Remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of his way will save him from death and cover over a multitude of sins. Romans 12:19-21 Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, Vengeance is Mine, I will repay, says the Lord. :20 Therefore If your enemy is hungry, feed him; If he is thirsty, give him a drink; For in so doing you will heap coals of fire on his head. :21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. YOUR ASSIGNMENT, SHOULD YOU CHOSE TO ACCEPT IT IS THIS WEEK, & FOREVER MORE Target your enemy, set your sites on him, and attack him with love and forgiveness, and grace and mercy and goodness It's satisfied by Divine mercy 4b.) 11 God's mercy creates hope Verse 35b And your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High. For He is kind to the unthankful and evil.

This is My Hope, My Expectation, My Crown WARNING: Please Be Careful with What I am About to Invite You Do, if you're a Christian, you have no option in this. If you're not sure, do not participate in what we are about to do. If You Confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior Today; then please stand up and remain standing "I Will Bless Those Who Use Me, Because Jesus Did I Will Love Those Who Hate Me, Because Jesus Did I Will Do Good to Those Who Do Me Evil, Because Jesus Did I Will Be Merciful to Those Who Hate Me, Because Jesus Did" It's satisfied by Divine mercy 4c.) God's mercy nurtures faith Verse 36 Therefore (because of who you are) be merciful, just as your Father also is merciful. "Therefore" in light of these things or because of what you have just heard, act upon it By Faith, Accept This and Do It "Your Heavenly Father is Merciful, You Have Benefited from His Mercy, Now That You are a Child of His, Act Like Him and Be Merciful to Others! >>>>>> (Because of who you are now) <<<<<< Be merciful, - just as your Father also is merciful. oijkti rmwn oiktirmon, oyk-tir -mone; Extending compassion merciful, to be kind and lenient, to stop a judgment or ruling in favor of the guilty. 12

It's powered by divine love It's controlled by God's grace It's motivated by Divine reasons It's satisfied by Divine mercy If You Need Ministry of Any Kind As soon as this song is over, you come forward today, and experience God's mercy and grace in your own life. End of Study 13
