Spring Training How to Hear God Speak 2/28/16 Habakkuk 2:1-3 Sunday AM A few weeks ago we began talking about what I believe is the most essential activity in a believer s life the ability to hear/distinguish God s voice. And I submitted that Biblical Christianity isn t doing things in God s name hoping He d bless them; but listening to His voice, and responding to His leading. My sheep hear my voice. I know them, and they follow me. For clarity sake, I ve defined the Christian life as knowing God, hearing His voice, and obeying His leading. In KNOWING God I m referring to knowing Him as Savior in salvation and growing in intimacy w/ Him as Lord. In HEARING God I m referring to cultivating a listening ear that s able to identify His voice in your daily life. In OBEYING God I m referring to a responsive spirit that allows God to direct your steps. So last week we talked about why God speak? To Reveal His PERSON To Express His PURPOSES To Disclose His PLANS To Personalize our PARTICIPATION

HARD: Hearing God begins w/ a greater desire for His plan to be accomplished than for your plans to be fulfilled. The bottomline is God created us for relationship and He wants us to know Him as well as He knows us. He wants us to know and participate in His will. But as w/ any relationship communication is essential. If there s no communication then there can be no relationship. But let s be honest communication can be challenging. When Meg speaks to me (and I know this may be hard to believe) I don t always hear her. I don t always listen. And at other times I might hear her, yet I don t understand her. BTW Men there s (2) things you have to do to understand a women. Problem is no one knows what those (2) things are. Seriously Meg and I have been married 21 yrs. and over time our communication has gotten better yet there are still times we don t hear each other and we don t understand each other. We can be in the same house but on different frequencies. The same can be said for our relationship w/ God. God is always speaking, but we re not always hearing or understanding Him b/c we re not on the correct frequency. God can speak through a number of mediums thru His Word, in prayer, thru others/church, in our circumstances, by His providence, thru the creation He once even spoke through a donkey.

Personally, I ve never hear God speak audibly thru my ears but why should He have to when He can speak directly to my mind and heart thru any means He desires. It is not THAT He speaks but rather if I am hearing Him when He speaks. I believe the answer to hearing God can be found in a number of texts in the Bible through a number of examples. But for the sake of simplicity, I d like to look the example of Habakkuk. Habakkuk was living in the Southern Kingdom. At one time, Israel was a united kingdom, but after Solomon died civil war split the kingdom in half Israel (north) and Judah (south). Israel had been taken captive by the Assyrians as punishment for living in open idolatry. Sadly, Judah hadn t learned from Israel s mistake so they were heading down the same road. Frustrated, Habakkuk went to God for help but God s response was not what he d hoped. God told Habakkuk He was going to raise up the Babylonians to teach Judah a lesson. He said, They ve been aiming to crush you for a while, so I m going to let them. That s my plan. Habakkuk wasn t happy. You can imagine if you lived on a block w/ thugs and you went to the police and asked them to do something about it and the response was Ok. We re going to drop a bomb on your neighborhood. You d be like, But I live there. Can t we do something else? And they say, Nope. That s the plan.

This is where we pick up the story. After delivering the news to Habakkuk in Ch. 1 in Ch. 2 Habakkuk responded to God. I will climb up and stand at my watch as I station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. Then the Lord replied: Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run w/ it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. Though it linger, wait for it; it will certainly come and will not delay. Habakkuk 2:1-3 I ELEVATE to INSTIGATE I will climb up and stand my watch as I station myself on the ramparts In ancient days, cities were surrounded by walls w/ gates. At certain points along the wall, towers were built as a lookout to inform the city of anyone approaching the gates. When a watchman climbed into his tower, it was a means to get above everything to get a higher perspective of the situation Habakkuk climbed up to get alone w/ God to see God s perspective of his situation. This is what we need to do when we can t find or hear God in our lives we need to seek to get above the situation to discover what God is desiring to do.

Let me put it another way. When you can t see God in the midst of your life, it s not b/c God has gone AWOL or is unwilling to show up it is b/c your life has more likely gotten too busy and lacks the margin to see/hear from God. The 1 st thing we need to do if we want to hear God speak is get alone and get quiet before the Him to eliminate the distractions, get His Perspective, and begin tune our hearts w/ His heart. Psalmist wrote Be still and know that I am God. Psalm 46:10 I wait quietly before God, for my victory comes from him. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress where I will never be shaken. Psalm 62:1-2 We need to w/draw and get alone so we can get in tune w/ Him. BTW this is the point of a daily Q.T. I believe if you are frequent w/ God then you are more likely to get on the correct frequency w/ God. An inner calm gives us an intercom to God. Warren Can I be honest? Some of are so busy and preoccupied w/ life hearing God is basically an impossibility. Like in the Parable of the Soils in Luke 8 Cares (Worries) of this World The Pursuit of Riches The Desire for Pleasure

So where do I begin this process of ELEVATING ALLOCATE a Daily Time to Meet w/ God PARTICIPATE Weekly in Worship/Small Group RELATE Personally w/ Another Believer II ANALYZE to RECOGNIZE I will look (scan the horizon) to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint. look to carefully scan or scrutinize to search for the proof and evidence of God to find out what God is up too. Don t believe everything you hear just b/c someone says it is a message from God: test it first to see if it is real. 1 John 4:1 We spoke 2 weeks ago about the different voices that are in competition w/ God s voice the voice of Satan, the voice of the world, and the voice of our flesh. Today I want to give you (5) keys for distinguishing God s voice. A Does it AGREE w/ the Bible? Simple Truth God s voice will never contradict His Word. What do I mean? His rhema (specific revelation) will never be in opposition to His logos (written inspiration). Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away. Luke 21:33

Bottomline is God s truth is consistent. He ll never tell you to do one thing in the Bible and then tell you to do something different in an impression. Example we re in tax season. Scripture says give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar Mt. 22:21. So if you feel God is telling you not to pay your taxes this year, I can assure you this idea isn t from God b/c it d be contradictory to Scripture. Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 approved of God (dokimos) one who passes the test. The idea is that our preparation isn t so other people will like what we have to say, but that our understanding might be pleasing to God. This means our Bible audience is God. We are to handle voice w/ accuracy by passing His test. handles w/ accuracy (orthotomeo) to cut straight used of a farmer who cuts a straight furrow in the soil or of a mason squaring/cutting a stone to fit in its proper place. It is to accurately dissect and appropriately apply God s truth through careful exegesis and meticulous interpretation. Meaning stop waiting for an audible voice and start looking for a verse b/c God s will begins in His Word.

If you re trying to hear God s voice and find God s will w/out consulting His Word you re like a blind man wearing a blindfold trying to find a hidden door in a dark room. B Does it ALIGN w/ Jesus life and teachings? Lest we forget God s #1 purpose in our lives is to make us just like Jesus. There is no higher calling or greater priority. So we can take stock in the truth that God will never tell us to do something that d cause us to be un-christ-like. So if it is not like Jesus if Jesus wouldn t have done it then I can promise you that you didn t get the idea from God. If you have any encouragement from being united w/ Christ, if any comfort from his love, if any common sharing in the Spirit, if any tenderness and compassion, then make my joy complete by being like-minded, having the same love, being one in spirit and of one mind. Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. In your relationships w/ one another, have the same mindset as Christ Ph. 2:1-5 C Can it be Affirmed by Godly Counsel? When it comes to hearing God we need to listen to the counsel of people who we know are walking w/ God. Quite honestly, this is the value of a church family/small group.

We need each other to confirm God s sense of direction in our lives. I promise you this if God has genuinely spoken to you, He will confirm it through other maturing believers. In the multitude of counselors there is safety. Pr. 11:14 Are they GODLY The way of a fool seems right to him, but a wise man listens to Godly advice. Pr. 12:15 Does this person walk w/ God? Do you see tangible proof of the fruit of the Spirit? Do the actions say they walk w/ God? Are they OBJECTIVE We seek advice from many sources parents, friends, kids, colleagues, pastors, etc. Godly counsel always tells you what you need to hear and not just what you want to hear. Are they MINISTRY-HEARTED Are they concerned w/ your intimacy w/ God? Do they take into account how their counsel will impact God s will in you? Are they ENCOURAGING Are they willing to do more than just point you in the right direction will they walk w/ you and hold you accountable?

Never turn to someone who doesn t have the ability to help you b/c they only have the ability to hurt you. D Does it AIM at surrender or sufficiency? Is the voice you re hearing moving you to dependence on God or defiance to God? Towards His will or away from it? I think of Moses. In Ex. 3-4 we find the story of the burning bush. Do you remember what God told Moses to do? He told Moses to lay down his staff. Moses staff represented his identity, income, and influence? And God asked Moses to let it go. Don t miss this What happened when Moses threw down the staff? It turned into a snake? And what happened when Moses picked it up? It turned back into a stick. God was telling Moses when you surrender who you are, what you have, and who you can be to me I will make it come alive. But every time you pick it up it ll die! BTW once Moses laid it down it was never again called Moses staff but instead the Rod of God. And oh how God used that rod and man for His glory. Point: God s voice will never lead you to self-sufficiency but only to surrender.

E Do I have an AUTHENTIC sense of God s peace? The final test to affirm God s voice is sensing God s peace. God is not the author of confusion. 1 Cr. 14:33 If you re seeking God and yet you have no peace; then either God isn t in it or His timing isn t ready. I say this b/c God s peace will never lead you away from His will. Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, w/ thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And let the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. Ph. 4:4-7 The will of God will never lead you where the peace of God will not keep you. III ANTICIPATE to PARTICIPATE Wait on God to speak and then respond to enjoy and experience His will by realizing God has a plan and a perfect timing. Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run w/ it. For the revelation awaits an appointed time; it speaks of the end and will not prove false. revelation refers to receiving a Word from the Lord.

await to be persistently patient we re to so desire God s perfect will that we re willing to wait on His perfect timing. If God is sovereign then according to His timing there are no accidents in life just Divine appointments. The struggle for us is that we don t either don t get the answer we want or we don t get the answers when we think we ought to have them. appointed time this speaks to God s timing. God tells us that everything operates by appointment. God is concerned w/ timing not time. Time is irrelevant to God He s eternal. In closing the best example I can think of to illustrate this idea is through TV and radio waves. Right now, in this room there are picture/sound waves traveling all around us and even though we see them if we had an antenna and receiver we could pick most of them up provided we got on the correct frequency. God too is speaking into our lives but we have to get on the right frequency to hear His voice. Tuning into God requires that (1) we get alone and get quiet (2) we tune in by filtering out and (3) we prepare ourselves for action once He speaks He speaks to those who are willing to respond.
