Ephesians 1:9-10 (ESV) 9 making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10 as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
It's not just a good idea; the Bible says you need to set goals in order to grow in your faith. Goals stretch you and help you become all God wants you to be.
The Bible says God plans, so we know that planning is spiritual. God planned out the universe and the more we scientifically study it, the more we realize how well planned it actually is.
Why? Setting goals is a spiritual discipline, because God sets goals. Did you know that? God sets goals, and so as you mature in Christ-like character, you will need to set goals. God has goals for history that have not happened yet. God has goals for his family -- the church -- that have not happened yet. God has goals for your life that have not happened yet.
The Bible says God plans to bring all of history to its goal in Christ, all of life is moving forward to a destiny. One day Jesus Christ is coming back and every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.
One day God is going to close down the books on earth and start a new heaven and earth, and as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. Ephesians 1:10 (ESV)
God is a God who sets goals, and He expects you & I to set them too. Like the Apostle Paul, he wants us to say, 1 Corinthians (ESV) 26 So I do not box aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air.
The Bible offers a balanced approach to setting goals that includes making plans yet doing so with wisdom and humility. Jesus illustration of building a tower implies that it is a good thing to have set goals (Luke 14:28).
Luke 14:28 (ESV) 28 For which of you, desiring to build a tower, does not first sit down and count the cost, whether he has enough to complete it?
To live with no motivation or planning is not God s desire. Proverbs 6:6-11 says, Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise. Without having any chief, officer, or ruler, she prepares her bread in summer and gathers her food in harvest. How long will you lie there, O sluggard? When will you arise from your sleep? A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest, and poverty will come upon you like a robber, and want like an armed man.
Let s address the two main objections I know I will get. 1. I am a senior, my time is about up, so why would I take time to do this? 2. Life seems to be cruising along pretty good so far, so if it isn't broke why fix it?
Senior s need to set goals. You may think you are too old to have dreams or set goals, but goal setting could very well mean the difference between being independent or not. Think about it, and form a mental picture of what you want the rest of your life to be like. Goal setting is what makes life interesting. Goal setting is what gives you that little extra push to achieve.
