It s about the relationship that we have in Christ and with God. We clothe ourselves with the newness because: We have been chosen by God We have been set apart as holy We are dearly loved John 15:16 NIV You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you might go and bear fruit fruit that will last Ephesians 1:4 NIV For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. Ephesians 5:1-2 NIV Follow God s example, therefore, as dearly loved children 2. Our new clothing is based on replacing vices with virtues It s not enough to put off or take off the bad things. We have to replace them with good things from God things that embody the life of Christ. 2 Peter 1:3-8 ESV 3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. We apply the power of God the power of being in Christ to every area of our life that needs it. The peace of Christ follows the virtues of Christ. When the things of earth grow strangely dim, we will find a peace in Him that we didn t have before. 3. Our new clothing is based on the indwelling word of Christ First, this is a theological matter. This church doesn t have the Bible yet they have the oral tradition of who Christ is and what he did. This has significance is combatting the false teachers in their fellowship. Second, this is a spiritual matter. In this description of a worship service, Paul is giving them instructions on how to maintain and live out a walk with Christ. Hebrews 10:24-25 NIV 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching.
