Catholic Education: Part 1 C atholic schools serve the Church and the country. Our country would be very different were it not for Catholic schools. So would our Church. According to the latest report from the Center for the Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA), 77% of all people in formation for the priesthood or religious life today attended Catholic school at some point in their life. That s a very high percentage. And, if you think about it, what is even more amazing is that there are about 6,000 fewer Catholic schools today than there were 50 years ago. So that 77% is especially high! Another report released by CARA in 2014 is about Catholics and Mass attendance: in 1960, 75% (Catholic school), 65% (public school); 2013, 27% (Catholic school), 2% (public school). One thing that I find very exciting and hopeful is that more and more people in the Church are on the Catholic school page. My goal is to move our Catholic school to the forefront in the minds of our parishioners so that our school is seen to be as important as pro-life and immigration. More and more bishops are also seeing the importance of Catholic schools. There are signs of hope everywhere! The true cost of a Catholic education has remained elusive for most of the 200-year history of Catholic schools in the United States. The strategic subsidy provided by vowed women and men in the religious life meant that Catholic schools thrived for the better part of 150 years without charging tuition. In my own case, I went to a Catholic school for Grades 9th and 10th. My parents never paid a penny for tuition. They only paid for milk and for books. Even today, our Catholic schools are subsidized by the women and men in the religious life, who have taught in them for free for 150 years. That s part of the subsidy that you are receiving today, and that s why our tuitions are so low. Otherwise they would definitely be much higher. The actual cost to educate a child at St. Francis Catholic School is $10,000, but our tuition for K G8 is only about $5,572 per child for a year for a parish family. That is only 56% of the actual cost to educate a child. This is very close to the national average for Catholic schools, which is 53%. Here is a comparative look at the average tuition cost for K G8 in a few private schools in Bend: St. Francis Cascade Academy Seven Peaks Waldorf Trinity Lutheran Morning Star $5,572 $14,700 $11,850 $8,103 $7,350 $5,500 So, we have kept the fees at St. Francis School as affordable as possible. I am aware that there are parish families who send their children to other private schools and not to St. Francis. That is disappointing. No school is perfect, but I know from hundreds of years of history that a Catholic education is for sure invaluable. Fr. Jose Thomas

Lectio Divina Divine Reading In Christianity, Lectio Divina is a traditional Benedictine practice of scriptural reading, meditation, and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God's Word. It does not treat Scripture as texts to be studied, but as the Living Word. History has this practice dating back to the 3rd Century and coming fully alive today. Second Vatican Council recommended Lectio Divina to the general public, rather than just to the monastic communities. Lectio Divina has been likened to feasting on the Word : First, the taking of a bite (lectio); then chewing on it (meditation); savoring its essence (oratio) and finally, digesting it and making it a part of the body (contemplation). In Christian teachings, this form of meditative prayer leads to an increased knowledge of Christ. Always prepare yourself find a quiet place, and open your mind to finding Christ in the passage being read. The first step is reading of Scripture. This should be slow and gradual and possibly reading it several times. The second step is meditating and pondering on the scriptural passage. It is advised that you wait for the Holy Spirit to illuminate the mind, as the passage if pondered upon. The third step is to pray. St. Ambrose quoted on the importance of prayer in conjunction with Scripture reading: We speak to Him when we pray; we hear Him when we read the divine saying. The fourth step is contemplation. Contemplative prayer is silent prayer that expresses love for God. There are several Websites that are available to give more history on this practice: https://usccb.org/bible/readings https://catholic.bible https://en.wikipedia.org/widi/lectio_divina Peace and Blessings, Office of Liturgy
