CONCORDIA LUTHERAN CHURCH 255 West Douglas St. South St. Paul, MN 55075 651-451-0309 FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER THE EPIPHANY Not. No One. Nothing. February 5, 2017 Blended Service 10:30 a.m. AS WE GATHER The classic structural shape of cathedrals and other great churches is cruciform, which means they are built in the shape of a cross. The building sets an imprint of the cross on the landscape, and the people who gather there set an imprint of the cross on the world. Paul writes compellingly to the Church at Corinth, For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified (1 Corinthians 2:2). No matter what the architectural shape of the building is in which we gather for worship, it is cruciform in purpose. We are here to know nothing except Jesus Christ, the crucified and risen Savior. PRE-SERVICE MUSIC THE WELCOME THE RITE OF FRIENDSHIP OPENING SONG El Shaddai Our Mission Creating a community gathered together to joyfully worship our God... to grow in faith and knowledge... to support one another... and to share the Good News of Jesus Christ El Shaddai El Shaddai, El Elyonna Adonai Age to age You're still the same by the power of the name El Shaddai El Shaddai, Erkamkana Adonai We will praise and lift You high El Shaddai Through Your love and through the ram You saved the son of Abraham Through the power of Your hand You turned the sea into dry land To the outcast on her knees You were the God who really sees And by Your might You set Your children free Through the years You made it clear that the time of Christ was near Though the people couldn't see what Messiah ought to be Though Your Word contained the plan they just could not understand Your most awesome work was done in the frailty of Your Son El Shaddai El Shaddai, El Elyonna Adonai Age to age You're still the same by the power of the name 2

El Shaddai El Shaddai, Erkamkana Adonai I will praise You til I die, El Shaddai INVOCATION PREPARATION P: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION Isaiah 58:7; 1 Corinthians 6:19 20 P: God s kindness toward us knows no limits. Let us go to Him, confident that He will grant us forgiveness for Jesus sake. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination P: Heavenly Father, C: we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have failed to show kindness, the fruit of Your Holy Spirit, in our thinking, speaking, and acting. We have not loved You completely or our neighbors as ourselves. We know that You call us to share our bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into our house. We have let opportunities to show kindness slip away from us, exhibiting only what was expected of us and keeping Your kindness hidden within us. Our Lord Jesus revealed His person and ministry through His words and actions. In Your great mercy, forgive, renew, and lead us so that we may be revealed as His faith-filled followers to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P: Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own, for you were bought with a price. Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. WORD INTROIT Psalm 119:9 16; antiphon: Psalm 119:12 P: Blessed are You, O LORD; teach me Your statutes! C: How can a young man keep His way pure? By guarding it according to Your word. P: With my whole heart I seek You; let me not wander from Your commandments! C: I have stored up Your word in my heart, that I might not sin against You. P: Blessed are You, O LORD; teach me Your statutes! C: With my lips I declare all the just decrees of Your mouth. P: In the way of Your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches. C: I will meditate on Your precepts and fix my eyes on Your ways. P: I will delight in Your statutes; I will not forget Your word. C: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P: Blessed are You, O LORD; teach me Your statutes! KYRIE ALL: Lord, have mercy upon us Christ, have mercy upon us Lord, have mercy upon us. THE SONG Seek Ye First/Jesus is the Answer Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Jesus is the answer for the world today Above Him there s no other Jesus is the way. Jesus is the answer for the world today Above Him there s no other Jesus is the way. Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added unto you. Allelu, alleluia! Allelu, alleluia! Allelu, alleluia! 3 4

SALUTATION P: The Lord be with you. C: And also with you. PRAYER OF THE DAY P: Let us pray. Father in heaven, in Your grace and mercy, You have revealed Your plan of salvation for all people through the cross of Christ alone. Strengthen our faith so that we do not rely on our reason, our own efforts, or anything else except the cross of Christ, the only source of forgiveness, life, and salvation; through Your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. OLD TESTAMENT READING Isaiah 58:3 9 you shall cry, and he will say, Here I am. If you take away the yoke from your midst, the pointing of the finger, and speaking wickedness, L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL Psalm 117:1 2a; 96:8 ALL: Praise the LORD, all nations! Extol Him, all peoples! For great is His steadfast love toward us, and the faithfulness of the LORD endures forever. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due His name; bring an offering, and come into His courts! 3 Why have we fasted, and you see it not? Why have we humbled ourselves, and you take no knowledge of it? Behold, in the day of your fast you seek your own pleasure, and oppress all your workers. 4 Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high. Is such the fast that I choose, a day for a person to humble himself? 5 Is it to bow down his head like a reed, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? Will you call this a fast, and a day acceptable to the LORD? 6 Is not this the fast that I choose: to loose the bonds of wickedness, to undo the straps of the yoke, to let the oppressed go free, and to break every yoke? 7 Is it not to share your bread with the hungry and bring the homeless poor into your house; when you see the naked, to cover him, and not to hide yourself from your own flesh? Then shall your light break forth like the dawn, and your healing shall spring up speedily; 8 your righteousness shall go before you; the glory of the LORD shall be your rear guard. CHOIR ANTHEM I Love You Lord Fidelis Choir EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 2:1 12 And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. 2 For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. 3 And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, 4 and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God. 6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away. 7 But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which God decreed before the ages for our glory. 8 None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. 9 But, as it is written, What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 9 Then you shall call, and the LORD will answer; 5 6

L: This is the Word of the Lord. C: Thanks be to God. ALLELUIA AND VERSE Mark 1:11b ALL: Alleluia. Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. Alleluia. HOLY GOSPEL Matthew 5:13 20 P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the fifth chapter. C: Glory to You, O Lord. 13 You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people's feet. 14 You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.15 Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven. 17 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19 Therefore whoever relaxes one of the least of these commandments and teaches others to do the same will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever does them and teaches them will be called great in the kingdom of heaven. 20 For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. P: This is the Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to You, O Christ. APOSTLES CREED He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven And sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. CHILDREN S MESSAGE HYMN OF THE DAY Thy Strong Word LSB 578 SERMON OFFERING THE SONG Thy Word When I feel afraid and I think I've lost my way Still You're there right beside me Nothing will I fear as long as You are near Please be near me to the end C I believe in God, the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. 7 I will not forget Your love for me and yet My heart forever is wandering Jesus be my guide and hold me to Your side I will love You to the end 8

and a light unto my path PRAYER OF THE CHURCH SILENT PRAYER The congregation is encouraged to take a few moments to pray silently for anything that weighs heavily on our hearts. We are also encouraged to pray for those in our lives who do not know Christ that the Holy Spirit may work powerfully to bring them to saving faith. THE SONG How Majestic is Your Name O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. O Lord, we praise your name. O Lord, we magnify Your name, Prince of Peace, mighty God, O Lord God Almighty. LORD S PRAYER (Matthew 6:9 13) C: Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. BENEDICTION P: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make His face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look upon you with favor and give you peace. Numbers 6:24 26 9 10
