TRINITY LUTHERAN CHURCH CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP SERVICE - 10:45 am MARCH 2, 2014 THE TRANSFIGURATION OF OUR LORD WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS L) God Works In Moments C) Make Moments for God and Others CALL TO WORSHIP: based on Psalm Based on Psalm 99 L) Let us worship God who rules over all; C) Holy God - lover of justice and righteousness. L) God spoke to Moses and Aaron when they cried out for guidance,. C) God speaks to us now in Jesus Christ. All) We worship and adore you, O God, and joyfully praise your holy name. GATHERING SONG You Are Holy ELW # 525 Chosen as a favorite by Naydean Ringdahl and Kathy Gilbertson CONFESSION L) Lord Jesus Christ, God's glory and love shone through you that day on the mountain, and you persisted in revealing that glory and love through your words and deeds, through your life of humble service. We hear again these words of God "This is my Son, the beloved, with whom I am well pleased, listen to him!", and we confess our failure to listen to you and our capacity to conceal rather than reveal your glory and your love. L) If we conceal your love because our ears are plugged by prejudice and intolerance, L) If we diminish your glory by reflecting our self-centeredness, L) If we hide your truth through our lack of credible witness, L) If we suppress your justice through our failure to empower those who are powerless, L) If we obscure your mercy through our hard and unforgiving attitudes, L) If we limit your compassion through our indifference to those in need, All) Lord Jesus Christ, help us to renounce any shameful attitudes of mind and heart so that we reveal your glory in and through all we do and say and are. This we pray in your name, and in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen 1

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS "The Lord our God is a forgiving God...for the Lord our God is holy" (Psalm 99: 8,9) And the Apostle Paul writes: "All of us, with unveiled faces, seeing the glory of the Lord as though reflected in a mirror, are being transformed into the same image... " (2 Cor. 3:18) So that - " If anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new" (2 Cor. 5:17) The good news therefore is this: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. All) Thanks be to God! PRAYER OF THE DAY: (ALL) O God, in the transfiguration of your Son you confirmed the mysteries of the faith by the witness of Moses and Elijah, and in the voice from the bright cloud declaring Jesus your beloved Son, you foreshadowed our adoption as your children. Make us heirs with Christ of your glory, and bring us to enjoy its fullness, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen CHILDREN S MESSAGE Shivon Miller SONG God Is So Good 1. God is so good. God is so good. God is so good, he s so good to me. 2. He cares for me. 3. I ll do his will. 4. He loves me so. 5. God answers prayer. CCLI # 1330601 FIRST LESSON: Exodus 24:12-18 At Mount Sinai, Moses experienced the presence of God for forty days and forty nights. The "glory of the Lord" settled on the mountain, and on the seventh day God called out to Moses. On the mountain God gave Moses the stone tablets inscribed with the ten commandments. 12 The LORD said to Moses, "Come up to me on the mountain, and wait there; and I will give you the tablets of stone, with the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction." 13 So Moses set out with his assistant Joshua, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14 To the elders he had said, "Wait here for us, until we come to you again; for Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a dispute may go to them." 15 Then Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days; on the seventh day he called to Moses out of the cloud. 17 Now the appearance of the glory of the LORD was like a devouring fire on the top of the mountain in the sight of the people of Israel. 18 Moses entered the cloud, and went up on the mountain. Moses was on the mountain for forty days and forty nights. 2

SECOND LESSON: 2 Peter 1:16-21 At the transfiguration, God's voice was heard, declaring Jesus to be the beloved Son. By the activity of the Holy Spirit, God's voice continues to be heard through the word of scripture. 16 For we did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty. 17 For he received honor and glory from God the Father when that voice was conveyed to him by the Majestic Glory, saying, "This is my Son, my Beloved, with whom I am well pleased." 18 We ourselves heard this voice come from heaven, while we were with him on the holy mountain. 19 So we have the prophetic message more fully confirmed. You will do well to be attentive to this as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts. 20 First of all you must understand this, that no prophecy of scripture is a matter of one's own interpretation, 21 because no prophecy ever came by human will, but men and women moved by the Holy Spirit spoke from God. GOSPEL LESSON: Matthew 17:1-9 Shortly before he enters Jerusalem, where he will be crucified, Jesus is revealed to his disciples in a mountaintop experience of divine glory called the transfiguration. Six days later, Jesus took with him Peter and James and his brother John and led them up a high mountain, by themselves. 2 And he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became dazzling white. 3 Suddenly there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him. 4 Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you wish, I will make three dwellings here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah." 5 While he was still speaking, suddenly a bright cloud overshadowed them, and from the cloud a voice said, "This is my Son, the Beloved; with him I am well pleased; listen to him!" 6 When the disciples heard this, they fell to the ground and were overcome by fear. 7 But Jesus came and touched them, saying, "Get up and do not be afraid." 8 And when they looked up, they saw no one except Jesus himself alone. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus ordered them, "Tell no one about the vision until after the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." PREACHING TEXT Psalm 100 SERMON Glad Songs Pastor Jerome Evavold SONG He Has Made Me Glad I will enter his gates with thanksgiving in my heart, I will enter his courts with praise. I will say this is the day that the Lord has made; I will rejoice for he is glad. He has made me glad, he has made me glad. I will rejoice for he has made me glad. He has made me glad, he has made me glad, I will rejoice for he has made me glad. CCLI#1330601 3

CONFESSION OF FAITH - THE APOSTLES CREED I believe in God, the Father almighty creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. OFFERING SONG We Are Marching In The Light ELW #866 OFFERTORY PRAYER: All) We glorify you, O God, through these gifts and our lives. May they be used to reveal your glory in ways which proclaim Jesus as your chosen and beloved Son: in ways which show that we have indeed listened to him. Amen PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION WORDS OF INSTITUTION THE LORD S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen. DISTRIBUTION SONG Let Us Break Bread Together ELW #471 BENEDICTION L) Go into this week filled with the holiness of God transformed by the glory of Jesus Christ glowing with the enthusiasm of the Holy Spirit SENDING SONG I m So Glad Jesus Lifted Me ELW #860 L) Go in Peace, Serve the Lord. The same might be said about the moment you first realize that the person sitting across the table from you is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with, or the day you show up at work and it doesn't feel like work anymore because your passion and your vocation have become one. It's hard to find words to describe such a moment: when your past, present, and future come into focus in the face of someone or something that says to your heart, "This is it. This is what it's all about. This is where I'm supposed to be." The transfiguration of Jesus is like that. It's the culmination of the time after Epiphany, as story after story, sign after sign, coalesce into a single image of who God is for us: the one revealed in the face of Jesus Christ. When we are in Christ's presence, we experience God's compassion, God's healing, God's forgiveness, and God's radical welcome. Through word and water, bread and wine, God's future breaks into our present and redeems our past. As members of his body, we become reflections of his face to the world. In just a few days we will begin the journey of Lent. We will leave the mountaintop for the valley. But we will carry the brightness of this day with us. We will hold tightly to the promise of Jesus' baptism and our own: that we are God's beloved. Not even death can disfigure a face that's been transfigured.
