One had been hemorrhaging for twelve years, making her continually unclean, so she could not be in any contact with friends or family, or worship with others. She had lost everything, was truly impoverished. The other was a twelve-year-old girl whose frantic father had come for Jesus to heal her. To both women Jesus showed the gracious love of God, a healing touch restoring them to life. The book of Wisdom states that God did not make death. God calls us to live graciously, generously. In Christ s death and resurrection we glimpse the diving plan: that we die to self so as to live in God. Can you see ways in which God s grace can touch others through you? From the Pastor's Desk Dear St. Veronica Parishioners, Summer Months: A Spirituality of Relaxation, Renewal, & Rejuvenation Need for a Break: We begin the month of July this weekend. It s another chunk of time gifted to us by God who is the author of all gifts and blessings. The children are out of schools and Faith Formation programs. The families are perhaps taking some time off to go on vacation. Whether we are at home or away on vacation, it is essential for us to look at these summer months as an opportunity to do things differently with an eye on the renewal of body and spirit. The idea of Jubilee in the Old Testament was to emphasize this very fact: that the land, animals, and the human beings all need to be refreshed and rejuvenated. Even God took rest on the seventh day! We look at Jesus resting from his hectic activities of the Kingdom of God. Examples: Jesus was asleep on the boat. He attended the wedding feast at Cana. He walked through the fields of corn, watching the birds of the sky and the grass of the meadows. Are you planning on doing some interesting things this summer? Here are some of my suggestions: A Good Book: We could read at least one good book that would nourish the mind and the soul. Try Anthony De Mello s The Way to Love: Last Meditations of Anthony de Mello. It s a short book with amazing insights. Or try any other book that might linger in your mind and strike a chord in your heart. At Least a Couple of Good Movies: When I look at the movie scenario, honestly, I m disappointed---almost on the verge of despair. I hardly find a movie worth watching. That may be because I m spoiled watching a lot of French and other European movies. When I look at the synopsis of movies, I want to flee from most of them. Either they are cartoons or haunted movies or superhuman yarns or vampire stuff or sci-fi ones. I wonder why we can t have simple movies with human beings dealing with their regular human situations. Even romantic comedies are scarce. I like to see simple joys portrayed in movies or some struggles which we can all relate to. I hope you have had a chance to see For Greater Glory. It s about faith and courage during the Mexican persecutions in the 1920 s. A couple of years ago there was a movie called Of Gods and Men. Don t miss that movie, which may be in DVD by now. Have you seen The Help? Right now there is The Most Exotic Marigold Hotel playing, which is not bad at all. You may want to try the three colors movies in French: Blue, White, and Red. Some movies in Landmark Theaters are worth the trouble and the price. San Francisco, a most charming city in the world: I have three most favorite cities in the world: Venice, Paris, and our own San Francisco. SF is only about 14 miles from SSF, and yet how many of us take the time and trouble to go visit this charming and beautiful city? When my family and friends come, I take them from one beautiful spot in the city to another, starting with Twin Peaks, going through Mission Dolores, St. Mary s Cathedral, Grace Cathedral, Fisherman s Wharf, Ghirardelli Square, Cable Car Turnaround at Market and Powell (one of my most favorite spots), City Hall/Civic Center, Coit Tower, Lombard Street (the Crookedest Street---my brother Abraham couldn t get over his excitement driving down this street), Golden Gate Bridge, Golden Gate Park, San Francisco Zoo, Cliff House, North Beach, etc. If you have time, you might wander through Sausalito. Wow! What a lot of places to visit! Summer may be a good time to hang out in these hauntingly beautiful spots of the City. Visitors come from all over the world to enjoy the charming San Francisco. Let s enjoy it too! Retreat from the Battles of Life at El Retiro: Once a year, I escape for my spiritual retreat to the Jesuit-run El Retiro in Los Altos. I need the silence and prayer and evaluation of my life. El Retiro is perfect for my needs. You may want to get away to this place for a day or two for prayer and reflection this summer. The facilities are great. The walks through the property and the views are priceless. You can see the deer grazing on the grounds. You can talk to one of the Jesuits about what s going on in your life and receive spiritual guidance. You can go there individually or in a group. Try this place for spiritual needs. You may get hooked on it. These are just a few suggestions for your summer. My old Jesuit Novice Master used to say: There is no holiday for spirituality. We are always in God s presence. Our relationship with Christ is ongoing and eternal. No matter where we are and what we do, we are always connected with God, people, and the universe. May the season of summer refresh and renew you! May you have the joys of love and peace! May you enjoy the relaxations and pleasures of life! May this season bring harmony and comfort to your body and soul! May good food and beauty, family and friends bring you energy for life! Happy Independence Day to you! May the Lord make this nation flourish from sea to shining sea! And may the good Lord inspire this nation to bring hope and peace to the world! God Bless America! Your Friend and Pastor, Father Charles Puthota
