Our Lady of the Assumption School 2141 Walnut Avenue, Carmichael, CA 95608 (916) 489-8958 March 7, 2017 With Hands to Serve and Hearts to Love NOTE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Academic Decathlon On Saturday at Jesuit High School, our Academic Decathlon Team competed hard and took second place in the competition. Throughout the event our decathletes performed with poise, and though they didn t earn a single individual award, they took 2 nd place in the logic competition and 2 nd place overall in a field of over 20 teams. An outstanding team accomplishment! They say that team is an acronym for Together Everyone Accomplishes More, and it is so true. We are very proud of and elated for our team and their coaches. Members of the team are: Brooke Abilgaard, Bella DeBenedetti, Richard Desmond, Ella Gordon, Jacob Hall, Jasmine Hubbard, Mollie Kauderer, Zachary Leslie, Andrew Loehr, Logan McQuoid, Matthew Mellas, Riley Mitchell, Mary O Callaghan, Jacob Parulan, Zachary Schmidt, Presleigh Seitz, Andy Stidger, and Siena Vincent. Our coaches are Alison Koerwitz, Linda Bloom, Chris Kauderer, Jennifer Hall, and Jim Mellas. We also congratulate Mary O Callaghan for her participation in the Central Valley Spelling Bee on Wednesday. Mary made it through several rounds of this highly competitive event and represented OLA proudly. Fridays During Lent We are now in the second week of Lent, and I encourage families to make the most of this Holy season as we prepare for Easter. Attending Friday night Lenten Soup Suppers and Stations of the Cross is a great way to bring Lent to your family and to further enrich your children in their Catholic heritage. Consider making it a goal to attend at least one Friday night Stations of the Cross this Lenten season. Students Needed for Passion Reenactment on Friday, March 24 OLA School and Parish Faith Formation students will come together on Friday, March 24 to share their vision of Jesus' journey from the time he was condemned to die to his death on the cross. The Stations of the Cross will be enacted by students from all grades at 7:00 pm in the church following the annual Lenten Fish Fry. We will need readers and students to act out the part of Jesus, Mary, Simon, Veronica, Guards, Centurions, the women who cried out to Jesus, and several students to be a part of the crowd. March 24th is only a few weeks away, so we need to begin practice this week. Practices will be held on Sunday, March 12th, Wednesday, March 15th, Sunday March 19 th, and Wednesday, March 22nd. Please let Mrs. Cotton know by e-mail if you would like your child to play a role in this: cotton@olaparish.net. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES As a reminder, all K-8 families are required to work 8 Country Fair hours or 2 Country Fair shifts while Preschool only families work 4 Country Fair hours or 1 Country Fair shift. While the Country Fair is celebrating its 67 th year as one of Carmichael s beloved longstanding traditions, the Golf Tournament has fast become a favorite annual Sacramento event in its 8 th year! Few, if any, other area parish schools are able to pull off one event of this magnitude, much less two great events within one week of each other! But if anyone can do it, OLA can! This year, to help ensure continued success of both events, families are offered a chance to work either event or a combination of both events to meet their hour requirement; meaning Golf Tournament hours may be substituted hour for hour for Country Fair hours. Golf Tournament hours are limited and are meant to offer families who are unable to work any or part of the Country Fair weekend a chance to fulfill their commitment. So, remember to set your alarm clocks bright and early Wednesday, March 8 th. If you have any questions, please email rachaelh@outlook.com Country Fair: Families needing pre Country Fair hours due to previous commitments, such as being out of town the weekend of the fair, please contact the work force chair Michelle Munn at michelle@englishgardencare.com. A few sub chair positions remain open, if you have an interest in helping with these roles, please contact Amy Kuzmich at ackuzmich@gmail.com: Fish Pond - Organize and oversee work force. NO live fish. Children play for tickets redeemable for fish after the fair at a pet store. Photo Booth - creative fun role organizing props and overseeing the work force for the photo booth.
