Friends, THE SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Have you heard tell of the Anglican vicar of an earlier era who spent most of his time away hunting? Concerned that the bishop might visit and find him out, he'd the cunning to name his horse "Ministry." Thus when the bishop came by, his housekeeper could tell his lordship that the vicar was away - "on Ministry." George Basil Cardinal Hume when told of this exhibited the practical spiritual wisdom one would expect of an English Benedictine. "Perhaps he should go away - on Retreat!" Every week God reminds us to take a break for life, prayer, family, friends and - above all - God. Our year needs a bump in it as well, to rouse us out of our ruts. I hope you give yourself permission to "be" by going away (even if only with a horseless carriage)... "on Vacation!" Our grad students and young professionals do that monthly by the Days Away that Alex Angstrom sponsors. This past week they were at Fenway Park and heard the St. Paul's Choir boys sing and saw the Red Sox win (surely the best of both worlds!) They've gotten away to the MFA and DeCordova museums, to Walden Pond and Marblehead beach, and apple-picking in season. I pray that if you can't afford a vacation you can at least allow yourself a Break! Our wild turkey has recently taken Cardinal Hume's advice to heart, barging past Fr. Kelly into our summer chapel (then unfortunately to his normal roost atop my car.) News breaking from the digital world is that our St. Paul's wall crucifix on Mt. Auburn Street is a popular Pokéman- Go site. May God's good news in Christ encourage you amid the challenges afloat in life, work and world. God Love You! Fr. George Salzmann OSFS JULY 24 ~ SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME It s all about relationships. God was no stranger to Abraham. Abraham s faithfulness and closeness to the Lord made him comfortable enough to bargain back and forth. This conversation wouldn t happen between strangers. Now, look at what Jesus tells us, ask and you will receive; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. Keep the lines of communication open between you and God through daily prayer. Prayer, and frequent confession and Eucharist will deepen your relationship with Jesus. SUMMER CHAPEL AT ST. PAUL S The Summer Chapel in DiGiovanni Hall is now officially open through Sunday, August 28. Except for the 9:30 and 11:00 AM Masses, all weekday and weekend Masses are celebrated in DiGiovanni Hall for the summer. GOING AWAY THIS SUMMER? All of us at St. Paul s hope that you have a restful and enjoyable summer vacation! As you head off from Harvard Square, please be sure to remember St. Paul s during the summer months. Although a more relaxed pace takes over, the good work of proclaiming Jesus Christ very much continues here the sacraments are celebrated, the outreach continues in a variety of forms, visitors are welcomed and year-round parishioners are in and out, and yes, the regular expenses continue even in the summer. Your weekly offertory contribution is of great help during the summer while you are away you can set a recurring gift through our on-line giving portal on the parish web site or by using the Giving-Kiosk in the vestibule of the church. Thank you for remembering St. Paul s while you are away! JULY 24, 2016 CHECK OUT WHAT S HAPPENING AT ST. PAUL S FOOD PANTRY The food pantry has been fortunate over the past few weeks to receive some delicious but usually expensive seasonal produce such as cherries and summer squash. In addition, our new partnership with Hi-Rise Bread Company once a month treats our guests to some amazing bread. Our most needed items at the moment are cereal, coffee, juice, crackers, peanut butter, and mayonnaise (to go with all of the tuna that we give out). Thank you to all who help to keep the shelves stocked each week as well as those who give their time as volunteers. ST. PAUL S GIVING KIOSK Don t forget about the St. Paul s Giving Kiosk - located in the vestibule!
